I feel your pain Dave.

Having worked as a journeyman mechanic for 30 years, and spent a lifetime working on and fixing just about everything, no one works on my vehicles. I have only bought two vehicles new ever, a 2001 Dodge Ram 3500 dually (Cummins HO/6 speed manual), and a 2005 Subaru Legacy wagon. It was very difficult to hand the keys over to a stranger when I had them in for recall or warranty work.

They wouldn't acknowledge my status as a journeyman and allow me to do the work either.

Even though the utility fleet I worked at did just that. With a fleet of about 1,000 pieces of rolling stock, a large percentage was one or two of the Big Three. So we got all the service bulletins, and performed all of the recalls and warranty work, and the utility was reimbursed for the labor.

These days the only time someone else works on my rigs is when one needs new tires. Even then I will put whatever vehicle in my shop, put it on the lift and take the wheels and tires off, put them in the pickup and drop them off at the tire shop. I am planning on eliminating that bit of fuss with the addition of tire service equipment to my workshop. Then I can be nearly free of paying some stooge to fool around with my vehicles.

My first car was a 1962 Impala goon. Like this one only white.

[i

First thing I did was lay the back seat down and lay shag carpet over the entire back of the car. This made it so if there were more than two people who wante4d to ride along, they had to climb in the back and sit in an uncomfortable position.

It also caused more than a few raised eyebrows on the faces of the fathers of girls I would pick up for dates.

I'd park it backwards at the drive in movies and lay the back gate down. A couple sleeping bags and some pillows, beer and salty snacks, and my dates and I would always have a great time.

I’ve been using a Pentax bellows and the Pentax slide copier, with a Pentax A 50mm lens to make digital copies of my slides and negatives for years.

After shooting a bunch I edit them in Photoshop to clean up any lint or dust I missed, and to correct for any color shift from the years the film has been in storage.
Using my K5IIs I get 16 megapixel digital copies, with my K-1 I get 36.

These were done with the K5IIs.

I’m sure that the investigators knew within a day or two who it was that performed the work without generating the proper paper trail, and those individuals are no longer employed at the company.

Every time something like this happens there are repercussions enterprise wide. Everyone is inundated with requirements for “training” that reinforce the policies and procedures, and if the training isn’t completed promptly the individuals receive disciplinary action.

Still, the culture is slow to change.

Management wants the airplanes built, no natter what. Mechanics and others involved in the actual build push back when unreasonable deadlines are imposed. A labor management tussle ensues.

I see in the news that a whistleblower was found dead after a deposition. He was supposed to continue the deposition, but when he failed to show up they went looking for him and found him dead in his pickup.

I see it the other way around Julie. I'm controlling my life with the apps. I decide when the lights come on and go off, and can interrupt them at any time, from anywhere in the world. I decide what the color temperature is, or if I wish, I can select from any of the millions of colors of the rainbow.

LED is short for light emitting diode. They aren't bulbs in the traditional sense, but a tiny electronic device that emits light when electric current is introduced to them. And they are much more robust than traditional incandescent bulbs.

Electricity travels at approximately 186,000 miles per second. This is pretty fast. So fast that we cannot detect the very brief instant between when we flip a switch and the light either goes on or off.

With incandescent bulbs, which have a tungsten filament, suddenly starting or stopping the electron flow may introduce some stress to the filament, thereby reducing the life of the filament.

With light emitting diodes, there is no fragile tungsten filament, so sudden starting ad stopping of electron flow shouldn't be as stressful to the device as it may be for an incandescent bulb.

Still, the laws of thermal dynamics will still mean that the LED bulbs will have a finite life, although they will have a much greater life than incandescent bulbs, due to the more robust nature of the components.

I’m using these #2.

Installation is as simple as removing the old bulbs and screwing in the new ones. Download and install the app, then configure the bulbs.

Easy squeezy, no pain, no stain.

LED bulbs are rated for 25,000 hours, or two and a half years if you left one on 24/7. Given that we only use artificial lights a fraction of each day, these bulbs might outlive us.

The Feit bulbs I am using can be switched off and on using the wall switch. I have most of them set up to operate on a schedule. They come on at sunset, and actually adjust as the seasons change, and do that stupid spring ahead, fall back dance. I set the ones inside the house to go off around 10 on weekday evenings, as that is about the time that Mrs. Racer would usually retire, and midnight on Friday and Saturday. The outside ones are set to go on at sunset, off at 10 weekdays and midnight Friday and Saturday, and come on around 5 in the morning, off at sunrise, every day of the week.

So the lights that other people in the house may want to turn off or on the old fashioned way can be utilized that way if desired.

I have 7 televisions.

2 in the shop (on a satellite box, one mirrors the other via an HDMI splitter) and 2 upstairs (on the main satellite box, also one mirrors the other), 1 in the living room (also satellite) and 1 in each bedroom each with a Roku box.

The LED smart lighting is finally getting to a reasonable cost, so I have been gradually converting all the incandescent lighting in the house. I've been using Feit brand LED lighting. Pretty cool stuff, light color temperature can be adjusted to mimic the warmth of tungsten lighting, or they can be set to any color. I have most of them set to run a schedule, coming on at sunset, going off later in the evening. I have enough to change out all the lights around the covered porch (there are 20), but need to remove the smart timer and swap the dimmer for a simple on/off switch first. These lights are pretty cool, and I can turn them on and off using an app on my phone, from anywhere in the world.

They had it previously, but the app they were using went away as the developer went legs up. So the next app they had was stripped down and didn't include that feature.

I'm not buying used, I'm buying new old stock, unopened in new packaging.

Catching up on the latest F1 sessions that have been recording while I'm busy living life and traveling to The Big Shed each day, now that the work week is over and I'm having a late evening after the end of the work week. Watching on the television above my desk(s) and I thought I would take stock of my growing menagerie of electronic devices.

5 desktop PCs (although one isn't currently operational, needing a new motherboard and all the stuff that goes with it).
5 laptops (two are from the early days and might be better off getting recycled, or maybe I could harvest the gold from the circuit boards).
2 iPods, and original 80 gig classic, and a 128 gig iPod 6 (looks like a cell phone, but it isn't).

3 iPhone 6s (I started with two, one for Mrs. Racer 2.0 and one for me. Mine developed a malfunction where the charging/sync wire plugs in so I snagged another to replace it.)
3 iPads. (Mrs. Racer's daughter gave her a hand me down some time back. I got the latest one last summer for my birthday. Mrs. Racer's iPad was acting up last autumn so I gave her a new one for Christmas
And I've lost count of all the flip phones that have accumulated in drawers and boxes in closets here.

And this past week I learned my credit union has rolled out a new app. Real exciting, lots of cool new features and functionality, including the ability to deposit a check using the phone to snap a picture.

But.

The app requires a version of iOs that my phone is too old to support.

So now there is a newer iPhone on the way, although I refuse to pay $1,000 for a stupid phone. Just like with the last one, I cruised eBay and found an older phone, new in box, network unlocked, for a fraction of the price.

At The Big Shed this evening, watching the crane crew doing a line move. Our airplane, the 41 and 43 sections have been joined and it is moving to the shake position where the crew I’m on cleans the inside and outside, and finishes any traveled work.

It is always so awe inspiring to watch half of a commercial airplane moving under the overhead crane. It is lifted carefully and quietly, moves smoothly from one position to another, then descends as silently as it rose.

In a few minutes it is in our shop, we will drop the flip doors of the tool, open the safety ropes around the chasm that is now filled with half an airplane. We will plug in temporary lighting and shop air, move the rear and side access stands into position and begin the shake process.
