DA* 50-135 Horror Story

Guess I should update. The lens made it back after about 3 month. She was sent of to Japan to be fixed. Precision let me know before sending it and also advised they'd let me know if there would be additional cost. My baby was sent back to me in perfect working order for the original quoted price. Happy camper [emoji16]

DA* 50-135 Horror Story

Just a little update. I was quoted $312 and sent the lens in to Precision Camera. After about a week they responded letting me know that the lens needs to be sent overseas to Ricoh/Pentax for special parts and retooling and they will let me know if the estimate changes. At that point I can approve or deny the repairs. If I deny it there will be a $18.50 shipping/diagnostic fee for them to send it back to me (seems pretty reasonable). They were very helpful answering questions once they reached out to me about it needing to be sent out. I told them to go ahead and send it.

Wish me luck! ::fingers crossed::

Thanks Matt I was only half paying attention when I looked at the repair quote the other night (4 kids running around). Looks like the "flat rate quote" is $312. This may be worth a shot. I can't see making more than a hundred off eBay from it broken after fees, shipping and other troubles.

It was stored in a LowePro bag. A sizeable one with various other gear. I suppose I could have set it down too quickly. That could be it because I thought it was odd that there were no "signs of impact".

And hah! I have 4 little Gremlins but they are pretty good and honest. They have never messed with my camera stuff and looked genuinely confused when I asked about it.

Flat repair after I looked it up was around. 360ish sooooooooooooo I just don't know. I guess I could throw it on eBay for parts and be depressed at the offers I get. There is also a part of me that would rather buy a converted used one or switch to a different lens. I was tempted by the Tammy 70-200 back when I bought my dearly departed 50-135

Hello all let me tell you a sad sad yet very short story. I have a DA* 50-135 that has served me relatively well and although it's been out for a repair or 2 I can't complain. I've had her since 2012. I opened my camera bag the other day to find it broken, just straight broken where the mount meets the zoom ring. I honestly have no clue how it happened but here we are.:(

What do you all think I'd be looking at for repair cost? What course do you recommend?

Hey guys thanks for caring and taking time to post.... BUT... I am an idiot. I took the time to figure out which LENS was giving me the problem aaaaannnnddd... The aperture arm on my DA* 50-135 is stuck:(:mad:

She is now sitting in some cold dark room with Mack Camera getting examined (luckily my three year extended warranty isn't up until Sept) ::Fingers crossed::

On a better note... my Tammy 17-50 2.8 is still working splendidly.

TL;DR Thought it was randomly blowing out photos... turns out it was just my messed up fancy DA* lens :(

Camera is stock. I'm unsure about the metering... Like I said, there is no way the green mode is functioning correctly, the images aren't just brighter than I would like, they are unusably blown out.

They are more than a little bright. They are really over exposed by a full stop at least.

Wouldn't that also effect other modes like Av and TAv? They are working fine, I'm at work right now and don't have my camera with me so I'll have to look at it again when I get home. Thanks for the suggestion.

Green Mode - Overexposure

Hi everyone! Just wondering if anyone else had had issues with bad over exposing while using green mode. I normally use other program modes but my wife prefers Green Mode. The last few months I have noticed that photos taken in green mode are way blown out and overexposed. I can't figure out why. I've reset to factory settings (just in case) and have tried fiddling with other stuff (but with green mode you can't really change anything)

Has anyone else seen this or know anything about it?

Thanks!

Shooting with the AA filter always On is defeating the purpose of getting a K-3 if you ask me :)

I get my K3 this week from BH. (That sub-$800 US price point with a grip got me) I am hoping that it will breathe new life into my DA* 50-135. The K5 and the DA* had the ability to give me absolutely stunning photos but it was also absolutely frustrating in terms of AF speed and accuracy. Can't wait :D

Don't know if I've shared this. On our last Disney trip I met two, count 'em TWO Pentax users.

One was a female with a family similar to mine at Magic Kingdom. We chatted a for a few minutes while a parade went by. My wife rolled her eyes at my geeking out over her set up.

Later, during another Parade, I saw and older guy shooting with a pink Kr. I said something to him but I don't think he spoke much English. Saw him again at Hollywood Studios and waved.

Going again in Dec. I'll have my eyes peeled.

K-5 ii/iis or Pentax k-3 for me

I'm in the same boat Kricha. I'm very tempted by the K-3 but part of me thinks a K-5 II or IIs would be a good enough upgrade from my K-5, especially considering the price drops that we may see on them. Might be hard to spend double the cash on the K-3 vs a K-5 II.

I had bought a used Sigma EX 17-50 from Adorama for 480 but sent it back because it had a stiff section in the zoom. Placed a back order here for the same. $529 for new is a slick deal.
