My first impression on reading this was from the "strong outdoors" quote. I think that that means high resolution in good light without worrying too much about the performance indoors at high ISO (most people believe that that's what flash is for).
I also think that "some three types, including minor design change versions, of single-lens reflex (SLR) cameras" could well mean 1 new SLR camera and 2 incremental updates.
Given the above and the "small and light, easily portable" quote, I think the only new camera will be a K-M Super, with better weatherproofing and a higher-resolution sensor. It's a feasible niche for Hoya to go for.
I was hoping for an APS-C K30D with improved autofocus and autoexposure, higher FPS and better high-ISO performance, but I'm not holding my breath.

Thanks to all for the info - I had my ratios backwards.
I find myself taking a lot of close-up photos with my Tamron 18-250 on my K10D, and was thinking of buying a true macro lens in the range around 100mm +- 20/30, so I can hopefully do better. I believe from other threads that all of those from Pentax and major 3rd-party brands are pretty good. I was going to ask whether one of them gave a higher magnification than any other, but I guess from the photos posted above, the answer is that any of them can get closer up with the aid of a teleconvertor or an add-on lens.

Noobie question time.
It seems like:
3:1 is normal close focus
2:1 is "macro" close focus on a Sigma/Tamron zoom etc
1:1 is true macro
But can you go further than that, e.g 0.5:1 or 1:2 (or indeed, anything below 1:1)?

One way to think of it is that it gives you a good quality 24-120mm zoom lens with reasonable close-up performance, which is a great walk-around combination. Not only that, it also gives you instant access to usable coverage of the 18-24mm and 120-200/250mm ranges without missing any shots or getting dust onto your sensor.
If you can afford and are able to carry around better quality wide/long lenses, have the time to change over to them, and are in no danger of dust contamination, even better.
Even then, a good quality walk-around lens with a useful zoom range (call it 24-120mm if you choose not to use the full range) is a great thing to have.

I'm going with friends to the European Football Championships this June. We have tickets for two games (Vienna & Geneva), and Bob Dylan (Salzburg), which will effectively be day-trips from our central base. We'll be sat in the audience, so a tripod and big kit-bag aren't possible. I'm trying to decide what lens(es) to buy to take on these day-trips.
I'm afraid that if I use my current lenses (see my sig), I will be swapping lenses constantly, missing photo-ops, risking dust, and missing the action, as during a match wide-angle & telephoto photo-ops pop up frequently and unpredictably.
I need a setup which is:
A) Actually obtainable, not the kind of lenses which turn up on a specialist website somewhere, once in a blue moon.
B) Affordable, relatively - up to the high-hundreds in GBP as a total.
C) Cover wide-angle down to at least 24mm, preferably wider
D) Cover telephoto up to at least 200mm
E) Focus & expose reliably and reasonably quickly with good sharpness at all focal-lengths
F) Portable - no huge lenses, 1 lens preferred, 2 maximum.
G) Won't give me back ache or bag-snatch paranoia for the rest of the day.
H) I'd like to have at least the possibility (if only I'm good enough:D) of better-quality pictures than the kit-zooms can produce.
I) Most importantly - minimise the shots lost through having the wrong lens fitted at the wrong moment.
The obvious choice would seem to be the Tamron/Pentax 18-250, but reports suggest that its performance drops away, away from mid-focal length and apertures. I'm thinking that I could maybe do better with, e.g. a good quality normal-to-tele zoom for most of the time and a lightweight wide-angle which I'll only need to switch to occasionally. Can you suggest any lens setups along these lines, or alternative setups which will achieve the same results?
Last time (Germany 2006), I used the TZ1, but this has poor high-ISO performance, no manual control, wouldn't lock focus on grass beyond about 175mm in 35mm-equivalent and only goes to 35mm wide-angle. This time of course I'm hoping to use my K10D.

Am I right in thinking that this lens is basically interchangeable with the Pentax lens of the same specs?
Currys have this for sale at the moment at GBP 29.87, but only if you reserve it and collect it from a store - and I can't find a store that has it in stock :mad:

Assuming that they have priced this lens wrongly by mistake, and I can't find one to reserve, I don't suppose there's any way I'm going to be able to make them sell me one at that price?

home of the Industrial Revolution, Charles Darwin, Clive of India, "Blue Remembered Hills", 'Hanging' Judge Jeffreys, varied geology, agriculture and countryside, the newest stadium in the UK, one of Britain's best preserved medieval towns, "Blott on the Landscape" (filmed in Ludlow strangely, not Telford), and me!
I started photography with a Practica and a Kodak back in the 70s, then moved up to an Olympus OM2n film camera, which taught me a bit about focusing and exposure. I picked up 4 or 5 lenses and other bits for that over the next few years. Then I got a hulking great Olympus 'compact' (can't remember the name), which took great pictures, but I sold that because I wanted something a bit smaller.
That something smaller was my 1st Pentax. It was a late 80s Zoom70s (name?), which fell down the steps of Incheon Stadium in 2002 :eek: and all the King's horses and all the King's men, at Pentax HQ in Tokyo, couldn't put Zoom70s together again :( . The 2nd was an Optio 430 bought there and then to replace it (my brother has that now). The K10D :) is my 3rd Pentax, bought in April.
Just now I've only got the DA18-55 :fedup: the distortion and vignetting can be fixed in software, but it ties me to the computer when I don't want to be, and there's still the CA/PF, sharpness and slow-focusing problems.
I'm very tempted by the DA* lenses, I'd like a proper wide-angle for landscapes, a decent telephoto for sports, and a fast standard prime (around 30-35mm ideally). Equally I like the idea of one-size-fits-all (reasonably well) lens like the Tamron 18-250, 'cause I don't want to have to lug all the other gear around!
