K-70 turning off shutter focus

I am a fan of back button focus. I have set up the AF/AE-L button to be the auto-focus button.

My issue is that the half-press shutter focus is still operational. I find this very frustrating at time because I will set my focus with the back button, release, press the shutter and the lens refocuses ... delaying my image taking and re-doing something that I already accomplished.

Question: Is there a way to de-activate the shutter button focus? I have looked through the menu system and do not see anything that would do that. On my K-3, when you set up back button focus, the shutter focus is deactivated.

Thanks,
Dave

Instagram's new Terms of Service - Dec 20/2020

Thanks Mooncatt,
As the article mentions, there have been prior changes that are much more "ominous". They also point out that, "What you can immediately do is to change your privacy settings to reflect your choice that your “photos are private.”

This is all fine if you are using IG for personal images of Latte's & Bunnies. If however, you are a professional photographer who uses IG as a marketing platform - the current terms of service, including previous changes, are concerning. It always pays to read the fine print, as they say. I guess the way to approach it and continue using IG is to accept that fact that any distribution of your images can be seen as free advertising for your work (ignoring the fact that most viewers will not know that you are the content creator).

This is the "new digital normal"!

Don, The fact that they want to use your images is not a surprise. The extent of their self-induced licensing is what is surprising. The option to sub-license images to 3rd parties without compensating you, edit images to their hearts content - that is what is concerning. They are a business, I get that, but they show no respect for creatives copyrighted content. It is all about the $$. I agree with your comment Don that the users are the product! I have a feeling that this product/user is going to be "dis-continued" and "no longer be available"!

Effective December 20, 2020 - The rules have changed. According to a commentary by Scully & Co (real estate management firm),

"Instagram says it does not take ownership of its users` content. But the terms and conditions provide that the user grants Instagram a “global license to use their content, not exclusive, fully paid and free, transferable, under-conceded.” This means that Instagram has all the rights of the original owner of the content, in addition to the fact that it is not an exclusive license. It is important for photographers to be aware of this, because if they sell an image under an exclusive license, the image element on instagram would violate that license."

Full text of the new terms are available here: Terms of Use | Instagram Help Center

I would appreciate your thoughts on this change. Do you use Instagram? Will you be moving to a new platform? Will you be shutting down you IG account to avoid licensing issues and other impacts? These are choices that I am considering.

Thanks
David

Event photography - Releases for group/crowd images

When you take photos of large events - weddings, reunions, anniversaries, etc - How do you handle getting permission to post those images on your website for promotional purposes?

- Do you have the organizers sign a general model release for promotion only?
- Do you have an announcement made at the event that photos taken at the event may be posted publicly?
- Do you just post them and deal with complaints as/if they arise?

All feedback and best practices are welcome!
Thanks

Congratulations - I think that was a very fair deal and your license agreement looks very complete and well worded (law school paid off). Let's hope this is the first of many deals yet to come!!

I have had a few offers through Flickr - a couple have panned out profitably ... others have not worked out but that is life.
Again, well done and thanks for sharing the process with the rest of us :-)

Another thought is just using a generic host such as www.BlueHost.com as a storage site for your raw files. You could probably set up a secure space to upload the raw files for a reasonable cost. I will be working through this same solution in the near future as well ... so thanks for be a "guinea pig" for the rest of us :-D I am interested in finding out which solution you end up with and how it works for you.

My Flickr account only hosts about 1100 images currently. I also have an Adobe Portfolio site that is my current "website", until I find time and inspiration to create a full blown integrated website with client area, gallery, e-store, cloud storage, blog ... no time for all that right now!

Bruce,
Have you considered Squarespace? It starts at $12USD/month and includes unlimited storage (I have not checked whether they accommodate raw files). Squarespace Pricing - All Pricing Plans ? Squarespace
You might be able to use the "Publish" module in LR to upload your images to the cloud on a regular basis. This is not as "behind the scenes" as the standard back up software, but it keeps you working within LR? Just a thought... (This post was NOT sponsored by Squarespace! :-D )

I've had a Flickr account for about 12 years. Most of that time has been as a "pro" account. So far my fees have not hit the new rates, but I will continue to keep the Flickr account as once source of sharing my images. I use Google photos for sharing images to other media sites such as Instagram. I appreciate the access to Flickr Groups (also available with a free account). I have considered smugmug and 500px, but Flickr continues to serve my needs well enough to stick around.

I would recommend popping over to YouTube and searching for a channel called "TheBiteShot"" - a lady named Joannie does a great job of explaining the details of food photography. I am sure you will find a few tips & tricks there.

Mark,
Yes, we could all wallow in how much Pentax has dropped the ball in recent years but ...
I would rather that we focused on all the amazing advances that Pentax has engineered/introduced over the years.
- Pentax had IBIS many years before the competition.
- In body Geo-tracking is something that is unique to Pentax.
- The fact that you can pick up a lens from 30 years ago and use it on your new Pentax DSLR without adapters is also a great advantage for Pentaxians.

There is a reason we all stick around here and talk about our chosen DSLR ... we love the Pentax products!! :-D
... mostly lol

Norm, The Pentax vs Others is very similar to the Ford vs Chevy discussion that you hear around the BBQ every year since 19XX; or comparing the weather this year to "that storm we had back in '05" ;-) There is no right answer and there are an infinite number of variations of the story. - That being said, I realize my folly in posting this thread - my apologies!

Thanks for the update Carl - We/I should be wise enough now to not believe most things until I see the product sitting on the shelves of the local camera store!! :-D

I am still satisfied with my K-3, so no need to go window shopping for quite a while ... except maybe for a new(er) lens or 2.
Let's see, a 24-70mm f/2.8, then a 100mm f/2.8 macro ...
;-)

Nikon Xhas announcedX Is "rumored to possibly" be releasing 2 new models for 2019 Z5 (APS-C) & Z9 (Pro body) with a 2020 release of a Z3 (DX Entry level) model - based on an article in Digital Camera World.
That makes 5 new Nikon bodies in 2 years ...

Pentax .... [crickets chirping] ... still "working" on something.

I realize that when you only have a single digit market share, the dollars are not there for R&D like the big brands. As they say, "Quality takes time!" It would be nice to even have a tease marketing program to give us some hope and excitement. Pentax always produces a high quality, unique, durable product and I always land on the same decision when I consider changing brands ... Pentax provides the best bang for the buck!!.

Let's hope the gang at Pentax introduce something more tangible than a software upgrade in the next 12 months!

How much is enough - post processing
Posted By R. Wethereyet

How much processing is a very subjective thing. It depends on what you want to portray to your viewer. Do you want a "fair" representation of what the scene looked like through your eyes? Do you want to show the dreamy beauty of the landscape? Do you want to express the dirty grunge of the street scene you captured? Each of these will demand a different level processing. Photography is an art form and as in painting there are those who strive for "realism" and those who are striving for "Fantasy". Each image takes on a life of its own.

John Gringo has a short video on this subject and he has developed a terrific rule of thumb for getting to a good starting point. The rule... err, suggestion is. "1/3 of Too Far!"
Basically, move each of the sliders/settings until you start to cringe, then reset them to 1/3 of the cringe point e.g. If "60" is too much Clarity, then reset it back to around the "20" mark. I've found this to be a good place to start in your post processing.
