Maybe wait for the DA50 f1.8, it will be cheaper than the FA.

My wife's friend showed me her D90 with kit lens the other day. We talked about photography and I showed her some of my shots with a $50 SMC 50mm f1.4 lens and she inquired about the bokeh.
I explained that I was using a cheap, fast lens and about aperture etc. and she had a confused look on her face.
She showed me how she produced bokeh....by taking a photo and quickly turning the zoom ring....

I visited my sister recently interstate and was keen to get a k-x.
I live in a small city where it is very difficult to get any Pentax gear, but where my sister lives it's much easier to find.
Upon telling her I was after a Pentax, she said "Oh yeah, we got a Pentax one...a red one !!" I LOL'd as it must have been a k-x (the k-r hadn't been released yet)
Anyway, I also caught up with a cousin I hadn't seen in 10 years....I had just bought my k-x, so I bring it out for a few photos and what do you know....
"Hey that looks like the camera I've got!!"
Yeah, they both had a Pentax k-x.
Later I asked them why they chose them, both said it was reviews they had read all said it was the best bang for buck DSLR around.

Yes I would agree with you about the Ricoh, I was surprised at the IQ myself and it is lightweight.
I guess I like the build quality of the Pentax-M better - smoother focus ring and 1/2 stop aperture spoil me.
btw, it came with a lens hood too that I can use with the 18-55mm kit lens !!

At my local Sunday fruit & veg market there is a guy who sells mainly electronic stuff but on occasion has a bit a photo gear too.
So far I have nabbed :
Pentax-M 50mm f1.4 - $15 - excellent condition, my current go to lens
Pentax-M 80-200mm f4.5 - $15 - has fungus but will work on this one
Ricoh 50mm f1.7 - $5 - excellent condition, sharp lens but a little plasticky
Sunpack Auto260 Flash - $15 - BRAND NEW NEVER USED, tilt & swivel, safe 7.4volts, a great flash to get me started
My wife complains that everytime I go there I end up with a new lens, but it certainly adds excitement to Sunday morning fruit and veg shopping !!

I finally finished my roll of Reala on the weekend (it took me a month) and promptly got it developed. Only my second roll of film through my MZ-M.
All pics of my daughter with Pentax M 50mm f1.4, although a did a few with a Ricoh 50mm f1.7 but forgot which ones !! Quick scan from the prints (coz I'm lazy). |

If DOF doesn't matter, then use f8 or f11.
If the shutter speed is too high, compose your picture in a darker environment, maybe indoors with natural light.
Give you camera to someone else to see how they go to rule out your eyesight !
Good luck.

Check out some Bryan Peterson books, really worth a read and helped me a lot.
His number one tip (compositionally speaking) always rings in my ears when I take any shot ....
"Fill the frame !!"

Bit of a noob question, but here we go :
I have been given a brand new MZ-M, so I loaded it with new batteries and put some film in it.
But the funny thing is the LCD doesn't turn off when I turn off the camera.
It displays the Film Loaded icon and the exposure number.
Is that usual ?
Thanks
