Nice shot, and even more more so, since this was shot with the kit lens.

One option you can consider in the bay area is renting a lens. I rented a 40mm limited from borrowlenses.com recently. Had a good experience with them and I think this was a cost effective way of trying out a lens to see if I like the focal length etc. There are no delivery charges if you pick up from their office in San Carlos/Redwood city and they do carry a small selection of pentax mount lenses including the 14mm, DA 21, 12-24, 40 etc.

My walk around lens these days is the Sigma 17-70, F2.8-4.5, non HSM, non OS version. I find the lens is awesome when shooting outdoors, though using it indoors, in low light conditions has been a bit of a challenge.

A nice series .. brought back memories of Beijing from the time I spent there 9-10 years back. Looks like the pollution has become worse in the last few years.

Adorama has the K-5 for $ 1279 now - better than their recent "$150 off" sale price.

I have had a similar experience with pictures taken indoors without flash. Live view focus is very slow but when when it does focus, it seems to produce better pics than the regular AF. Lack of focus point confirmation in the K-x is a bummer.

PS Elements 9 has a $ 20 mail in rebate offer currently. You can buy it from Amazon for about $ 50 ($70 purchase price minus 20 mail in rebate).

My laptop was stolen on a train from Amsterdam to Brussels a few years back and the painful lesson I learned was to never put anything of value in the overhead rack, even if it is right above you.

Yesterday, I went to Pier 39 in San Francisco and thought I would try to keep track of the DSLR brands that I spotted. In about 2-3 hours, I spotted 4 Pentax users - a K-7, a K-m, a white K-x and the fourth I couldn't identify. My black K-x was the fifth one in the crowd. I also spotted one Sony and one Olympus. Canons seemed to be the most common and were too many to count. Plenty of Nikons as well.

Yes, it'll be nice if they also carry it in stores. Given Costco's generous return policies, a lot more people may feel comfortable trying out a brand that isn't a household name.

Surprise, Surprise ! I didn't think I would see a Pentax at Costco but today, their web site has the K-r two lens kit (18-55 & 50-200) listed at $ 699. Price includes a bag and SD card.
Nice job Pentax !

The K-x is a nice camera but the lack of a visible focus point does make it hard to figure out in advance if the camera is focusing where you intended it to or not. Like another poster suggested, try changing the setting to center point focus, instead of the 5 or 11 pt auto mode.

I can tell you one thing for sure - most Westerners going to India for medical procedures aren't going to government run hospitals. Most, if not all, hospitals that they go to are privately owned. The reasons for them being much cheaper are quite obvious - apart from much lower salaries for doctors/nurses etc, they don't have to deal with malpractice insurance.

I was a photography newbie when I bought the K-x with the 2 lens kit last year. Initially, I was quite happy with the kit lens (18-55), but having recently bought a used Sigma 17-70 and a new DA 35 f/2.4, I tend to agree with the advice given here that it is the lens that matters more. You will see many, many examples of wonderful pics on this forum, taken by camera bodies much older than the K-x.

I don't think there is any manufacturer whose warranty would cover something like this.

With a bundle, price is not the only factor. Even if it is priced correctly, it is possible an individual buyer may not want all the things included and not want to go through the hassle of selling the unwanted things later.

It was a leap of faith for me. The K-x is my first DSLR and I hadn't seen it in any of the stores nearby. However, the features looked better than comparably priced Nikons/Canons, the reviews were good and so, I decided to go with Pentax.
