Whoa! Reconsidering use of UV filters...

I know everyone has their opinions on this issue, and there are at least five threads existing on the topic already, but here's what happened today. I got my brand-new "Plastic Fantastic" 35/2.4 in the mail today and immediately slapped it on my K-5iis and started wandering around the house taking random photos. The thought occurred to me that I would need to get a UV filter for it b/c that's what I always do. Meantime I figured I'd just steal the one from my FA 50/1.4, since it was the same size (49mm). After installing it, I thought it might be interesting to take a fairly identical shot to one I had just taken sans filter and compare the two later. I figured I'd have to do some serious pixel-peeping to see any real difference. Actually, the difference was immediately apparent on the review screen: A nasty little reflection artifact right there on the "with filter" photo. I had noticed similar reflections on some shots I had taken a few days ago with the FA 50/1.4, but I was chalking those up to the lens itself coupled with obnoxious backlighting. Now I know it was the filter. The filter is a Tiffen 49mm UV filter made in the USA. The two comparison photos are below. So....is this something I would not see with a different brand/quality of filter, or is this just the price you pay for the protection? For the time being I just removed the filter and installed a rubber hood to provide some protection. I got some nice photos that I'll add to a more appropriate post.

I'm late to hear of this little fellow. I've been saving up for a Ricoh GR and thinking of a WG-3 in the meantime since I lost my old Olympus waterproof. Now I'm thinking of skipping both in favor of the AW 1. Thoughts?

Nope--Still doesn't work with my old Super Takumar M42. When I used the Sears KA mount yesterday, I didn't have to bother with the AF button. Otherwise it worked just as you described. Still haven't tried the foil technique--a bit nervous about shorting out contacts deliberately. My guess is the difference between the KA and the adapted M42 is that actuating arm that protrudes from the back of the KA.

Gregory,

Great job showing the potential for post processing. I noticed you have many such before-and-after pairings on your Flickr site. So...obsession? profession?

Well, Eureka! but...Dang! Something in the distinction between an adapted M42 and a no-kidding K-mount made the difference. Just worked like a charm with an old Sears-brand 135/2.8. But I LIKE my old M42s! How to make the feature work with them, I wonder? Must investigate...

Come to think of it--I never got that feature to work satisfactorily either, when I tried it on my K-7. Haven't tried it on my K-5iis, but it sounds like the same experience. What I was hoping for was something like the "snap focus" I've heard discussed with respect to the Ricoh GRs--Maybe my expectations were wrong? Has anyone posted a tutorial? Hang on...going on a search here...

Here's a guy who explains how to use it on a K20D--but it's a very specialized usage, with a remote trigger, etc. https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/53-pentax-dslr-camera-articles/51036-how-...tch-focus.html

Maybe that's really the way it's meant to be used?

Okay, just went and followed the instructions from page 117 of the manual to the letter using an old M42 manual lens and, just as p_tmb said, the thing just happily snaps off out-of-focus pictures. No "catch" to it. I wish I had a k-mount manual lens to try. Well, I do have a Vivitar. Hang on...

I wonder if all the effect is from light pollution--probably a smog effect added to the mix as well. Great capture!

Great shots with the K-5. I'm sad to see such poor results from the WG-3, however. I was seriously considering purchasing one. I tried a Nikon AW110 out a few months ago, and I got better results than that:

Very nice capture. Agree with normhead on the highlights, but wouldn't have noticed if he hadn't pointed it out. Might be correctable in PP?

Ditto, except I got the IIs--Not sure I'll ever see the difference between the II and IIs. I already had an idea of the improvement I was going to achieve because I had bought a K-01 when they were being clearanced out. Same sensor as the K-5, and it was kicking my K-7's butt in low light. That old K-7 took some great daylight photos for me, though. It was my first DSLR, and I'll never regret it.

I've owned the K-01 for some time now, and I've recently upgraded my K-7 to a K-5iis. I find myself reluctant to give up the K-01. It goes SO well wit that 40XS, and it's also the logical choice, with the focus peaking and all, to use with vintage lenses. Additionally, I think it's a pretty awesome video machine. So I'm staying put, body-wise. Although I sold my Q and am looking forward to a GR. But other than that, I'm done. Except for LBA. Anyway...

Even if I like a brand, I don't like to provide free advertising for it. I've replaced all my gaudy advertistraps with generics. Speaking of which, I really like the Op/techs. Made in USA!

Looking at the images of the camera, I don't see any with the telephoto retracted. I'm wondering about the bulkiness of the camera--Is it a "shirt pocket" camera like the GR, or something a bit bigger?
