I'm aiming for these kinds of pictures

I'll take a look at the Takumar lense info. Would the difference be that they need to be focused manually? For many situations, I can handle that.

Thank you all for the suggestions. I've taken notes. And apologies on the size/ format of the pictures. I think I've corrected them now and will not make that newbie mistake again - I appreciate your patience on it.

I actually think I have seen the K-x body only. So maybe that with the Tamron 28-75 f2.8 and a flash may get me started, or so it sounds.

Marc, 100% agree with you. Knowing what I'm doing is THE most important factor. And, luckily, I'm pretty nerdy so I plan on studying up and practicing. I suppose I want to move forward with the DSLR purchase not so much thinking I'll instantly get better pictures, but rather because I'd like to get all that practicing done on the camera itself, that way I learn both the skills as well as the camera simultaneously. Also, the superzoom is mostly for the spouse's use. And, finally, because, well, I really really want it LOL. But no worries, I'm not deluding myself into thinking I'll suddenly become a photographer because I got a better camera. Suggestions on a comprehensive book to build my skills from the ground up are appreciated.

Thought it might make sense to post the types of pictures that I'm aiming for as I seek advice on what gear to get. I took these with a superzoom (Sony HX1) that just isn't satisfying me. A DSLR should do better, I think. But I need to plan wisely which one and what gear to get with it since full budget is $1k total (and even that's stretching it). I've gotten some great advice already and am leaning toward the K-x. Not sure what lenses I could fit into the budget to get these images to not have so much noise when I print at 8x10 (they give crap prints and I do want to print some stuff down the road at at least 8x10), and to catch the critters when they're moving as in the running picture.

I know these aren't very good and that's a lot to do with skill level. I will continue to learn. I just want to have the right equipment to give me a fighting chance. Ideally, I'd have $10K to throw away on a hobby, but I don't. So hopefully showing you these pictures will help you help me.

Thank you!

Just buy older body and focus on lenses?

The more I read, the more I realize that the lenses it where it's at, particularly because most of my shots will be fast moving objects (kids/pets) in low light (indoors). I'm unlikely to get fancy with features. I just want the camera to delivery crisp sharp images and to work quickly - the rest will be about composition.

What would I be missing out on if I went "backwards" to the K100D, K10D or even the *istD models for my DSLR body and then focused on getting a fast lense or two? Would I even be saving much by going with an older body (I'm just assuming the prices are lower, maybe that's an inaccurate assumption?)

That helps A LOT!

K-x it is.

Now, keep talking to me about lenses/ accessories, including alternatives such as third party lenses that could save me money (would I lose quality)?

My head is spinning from all the research. I'm leaning away from the C and the N because, well I don't like the feel of the C's in my hand and the N's I like but are pricey (and heavier than I'd like). I also owned a Pentax K1000 that a teacher gave me in 1985. My first camera and I loved it dearly. I want that feeling back! LOL.

I'm an amateur hobbyist that's been away from photography for a long-time. I'll be honest. As much as I think I'll be out there being really artsy, I'll probably mostly be taking pictures of my fast moving kids inside our not well lit house or at the soccer field. A challenge in it's own right and probably the best practice for a learning photographer. When I do pry the younguns from my ankle and get out there in the world to do photography as an art, I will likely be roaming the streets of NYC taking candids of interesting faces and interesting city life moments. I also really want to learn to do macro photography because most inanimate things don't seem interesting to me unless I'm really, really, really close.

Now to the camera. I have none right now. And I have cheap (umm, frugal, hard-working) husband that's pushing for a smaller budget. I could probably push to $1k, but he'll want me closer to $600-$700.

I've looked at the K-x and K-7 as options. I'm also wondering about the K2000 and *istDL but don't really understand where the latter two fit in the "hierarchy" ... I just saw the k2000 really cheap somewhere :o. Then I see all this talk about K100D, K10D, D200D, K20D and my head starts to spin. Then I wonder what lenses would I get to fulfill my speed combined with indoor lightning needs plus my occasional macro and zoom-in-the-streets of NY so I don't get beat up with my camera up in a stranger's face needs.

In a "for dummies" version, can someone explain the different between the various Pentax DSLR bodies and which one would make the most sense for someone like me. And then explain what specific lenses I need/ could use ... then how do I "cheat" on the lenses so as to get my desired results without going over budget.

:)

I'm new around here. Might as well say I'm new to photography since the last time I was photographing (hobby/amateur) I was using a K1000. I LOVED that thing.
