DA15 in the streets of NYC:

I have a couple more random street shots (all DA15 + K7) from NYC on Tumblr >>> Random New Yawk

The GR and other fixed lens compacts have since replaced my K-system, but I still have fond memories of the DA15. All these images are from 2 years ago, but I'm still going through them (top image for example, I just edited and posted recently), and they remind me of how much fun it is to shoot with the DA15. Tiny, responsive, just a real joy to use in the streets.

Ricoh GR vs. Pentax DA 21mm Limited ?

Have had both. In terms of sheer quality, the GR's lens will win out vs the DA21.

I think the biggest thing to consider is going to be whether you're going to be comfortable using the GR's LCD as the only finder, or using an external finder that's not coupled to the lens vs a real finder as on a K DSLR. Personally, I don't find this an issue, but for a lot of people, it could be a deal-breaker.

For me, I'd go with the GR vs the DA21 anytime. The size + weight saving alone is worth it, IMO.

I typically don't AF, and just prefer to zone-focus, and while I initially thought the GR's snap focus function would be harder vs the real engraved marks on the DA21, I have not found it to be an issue at all.

Cheers.

Was on a business trip, when I found out that there was a tattoo convention a few blocks from my hotel, so I just sort of wandered in:

FA31:

FA77:

Both on a K7.

I've since moved away from shooting with a DSLR system, but if a compact K-mount FF ever materializes, I'd grab these 2 lenses in a heart beat.

It's easy to gush over newly acquired gear, but after just a couple of weeks with the GR, I can't help but think I've found 'the one' - no other camera has ticked almost all the right boxes for me - size, snap focus, quality, FL etc..

The GR in the streets of Manila:

All images processed from DNG.

I think snap focus is just pure genius. Barring an actual distance scale on the lens barrel, for my purposes, I find that snap focus works really well. Though I hear that the new Leica X-Vario has a pretty nifty design that sounds like it's really useful for those like me who like shooting pre-focused, yet occasionally need AF. But I much prefer snap focus vs the on-screen DOF scale and fly-by-wire set-up of the X100s, for example.

I also find shooting with just the LCD pretty liberating. I find that my shooting is a lot more 'fluid'; if that makes any sense. Though I did still get a finder for the GR (The Panasonic VF1 - designed for the 24mm EFOV of the LX series, but I think the brightlines fit the GR's 28mm EFOV perfectly; I used to have the Voigtlander 21/25mm (I lost it) for my GRDIV, and it had brightlines for 21mm and notches for 25mm, and I much prefer the Panasonic, though of course it won't be too useful with the GW-3 adapter). But I've mostly preferred shooting using just the LCD so far.

Cheers.

In terms of file quality at 400+ ASA, I would say the RX100 would blow the GRD IV out of the water.

But in terms of handling, it's the exact opposite. The GRD IV is just a real joy to use.

Though I've been toying with the idea of getting an RX100 to pair with my GRD4 (I even ordered a few extra RX100 batteries already) - but I decided to wait and see what the GRD V may bring later this year.

B&W not in-camera, it was done in post.

I'm really glad I decided to get the GW-2 adapter. It's probably one of the most compact ways to get an f/1.9 21mm EFOV.

Cheers.

Does Anyone in Here Have This "Capture" Camera Holder?

Have one, and have used it exclusively for the past 6 months or so. I generally hate camera straps, and had initially gone strap-less before getting this.

Use it with my K7 and Limiteds, largest lenses I've used on it are the FA 31 and 18-55WR, which are the largest lenses I own, and probably as large a set-up as I'd want to use it with :) I don't know if it would actually pair well with large-ish lenses like the DA* 16-50 for example.

At first I used it strapped to my belt, so it worked like a camera holster. But now, what I do is clip it to the straps of my shoulder bag. So the camera sits at around chest level.

Also, I find it quicker if the camera releases towards the ground. (e.g. if my shoulder bag is hanging on my left shoulder, then the Capture Clip's red release button is on the bottom left side). I think most people typically use it the other way around (i.e. The camera slots from the top, and if you release it, you pull it up)

But for some reason, it just doesn't feel right using it 'the right way up.' I don't know if I actually risk dropping the camera more by using it the opposite way, but I have had zero problems so far.

The DA15 taking to the streets:

Because you're usually working within a couple of arms lengths away, it's very rare that your subjects won't notice you pointing your lovely Pentax in their direction. And as you can see, reactions tend to be pretty varied, from laughter, a hand in the face(with a little yell), and some people just don't care. But in the end, we all shared a good laugh. :)

Only reason I'm more hopeful re: this rumour vs all other previous rumors is the mention of Sony. If Sony announces a refresh of their FF line, then I think that's a good bet that a Pentax FF is also due out soon. Hmmm.. Might be a good time to hunt for an FA* 24 :D

+1 for using Faststone Image Viewer to view RAW files. I shoot Pentax DNG's and Olympus and Panasonic RAW files, and Faststone handles them all pretty well. >> link to Faststone

Then for processing I use CS5 about 90% of the time, and Lightroom once in a while.

The DA15 hits the Big Apple:

Incidentally, the plan was for me to drop by B&H and get a DA21, which was supposed to 'replace' my DA15 as my 'street' lens, since the DA15 is a bit too wide for street photography (not selling off the DA15 though, the plan is to have both the 15 + 21 as my street kit). But with the recent price increase, the US price of the DA21 is now the same as local prices in Manila, so I decided to hold off on my purchase and just get the DA21 when I get back to the Philippines. I had the 15/31/77 with me in NYC, and the DA15 was used about 90% of the time.

Cheers.

I'm currently in the East Coast of the US on a business trip, and I managed to get away for a few days and visit NYC for the first time. :)

And of course, what else is there to do but hit the streets armed with a camera.

Wall Street again:

Before making the trip, I was expecting to do most of my shooting in Times Square and the immediate area. I was thinking crowds = lots of opportunities to shoot candids of strangers. But I was actually a tad disappointed with Times Square (as far as shooting strangers). It was crowded, but it was too touristy. I wanted to shoot more 'locals' (ie "real New Yawkers"), and based on my experience Times Square isn't the best place for that. (I guess if you lived in New York, you steer well clear of Times Sq)

Obviously I'm no expert having made just two trips there (one weekend + another that was about 5 days), and I haven't been everywhere, but in the short time I was there, my favorite spots for shooting in Manhattan were Union Square, Wall Street on a work day, Columbus Circle especially during rush hour, the whole stretch of Fifth Ave from about 42nd to Grand Army Plaza and pretty much the whole stretch of Broadway from Columbus Circle to Battery Park.

Definitely a great city for street photography IMO. Lots of energy in the streets, lots of quirky characters and it's very walkable.

Pentax K-01 vs Fuji X-Pro 1 vs Olympus OM-D
Posted By ShowMeTheMoney

Fuji has the luxury of not having a DSLR system to think about. Pentax also has to contend with positioning products within its current line-up. With the possible exception of the X100, Fuji has no such line-up to speak of. While the K-01 holds little appeal to me, I think it makes sense for Pentax, and I understand where they're looking to go. There can be a market for the K-01, especially at such a low price point. Women (which can be a big market, and as untapped a niche as the high end), people who want unique looking cameras etc..

The way I see it, if Pentax had come out with the Fuji X-Pro1, the back-lash would just as be severe. We would see quite a lot of threads saying what are Pentax thinking releasing something that'll set you back at least $2300 that won't even take K-mount lenses, blah blah blah.

Sure, personally I wished it looked more universally pleasing, I wished it had a viewfinder etc.. But at the end of the day, all that means is that it isn't for me and I certainly don't think it is as bad as people make it out to be. The original Olympus PEN and the Panasonic GF1 both came with no EVF's and launched at pretty much the same price point. They had optional (pricey) OVF's for specific primes, and were slightly smaller and had kit-options for primes with more useful FL's than the 40mm XS - but then the K-01 has a bigger sensor and the significant ability to AF with all AF K-mount lenses. That's the trade-off. And it's not a bad trade-off at all.

The way I see it, Pentax is slotting this in as its entry level camera, there are rumors of a K300 in a few months, most likely a spiritual successor to the K200D, then you've got the K5 successor up top. Pretty decent line-up if you ask me. Plus, they all take K-mount. I'd rather have that than have a new mount in the $2K+ price range. I don't expect a Full Frame anytime soon, as I like telling Pentaxians - don't even expect a Full Frame from Pentax unless Sony announces one. Once Sony announces a Full Frame - that's the only time you can start hoping that Pentax might have one in the works.

This thread was definitely a big factor in me getting this lens. Unfortunately, Pentax marketing here is limited to the Q and the different colored Kr/Kx kits. :p

Even though I've started thinking that the DA21 might be better for street shooting, the DA15 is still my go-to-guy, at least until I can get the DA21 and do a comparison on which FL I prefer for street, LOL.

Trying out the FA31 for street: Though it has become my default social lens (i.e. family and friends) - I am struggling quite a bit to use this lens for what I like doing - street photography:

Untitled by joshxiv, on Flickr

I guess I just haven't quite warmed up to the ~47mm FOV just yet. (The DA15 is my favorite street shooter). For me, the FA31 is definitely a lens that just begs to be used on Full Frame. ;)

I had previously owned the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 during my Nikon days, and one thing I noticed right off is that the FA31 definitely focuses much much closer than the Sigma. With the Sigma, I used to have problems shooting someone sitting across the table from me at say a coffee shop or a restaurant for example, but not so with the FA31.

Thanks very much Kevin, I really appreciate that, cheers!

My favorite street shooter is the DA15 (but I don't know if that will still hold true if I had the DA21) - here's one with the DA15:

Untitled by joshxiv, on Flickr

But as far as using it in low light though, I think the lack of speed can definitely be a big problem. Here's an example at low light (this one isn't really 'street photography', I know) - but I just wanted to show where you'll be at when the sun goes down. This was shot hand-held, wide-open, and I was already at 1/15s and ISO 2500 (about as high as I'd want to go on the K7).

Again, not really street photography, but I hope it helps to illustrate the DA15's limitations in low light somewhat.

With the K5/Kr/Kx, you can of course push your ISO much higher, but then you would still want a much faster shutter speed to freeze movement, so even ISO 6400 isn't probably enough in some situations, unless you get lots of extra light from the environment at night, or unless you want to go all Bruce Gilden.

Cheers. :)

Based on that, I'd go:

DA 21 Limited - small and compact, great for street and 'scapes, great walk-around lens
DA* 55 - your portrait and low light lens
DA* 50-135 - for portraits & long lens 'scapes, for street it's big and bulky, and I don't recommend long lenses for street, but if you prefer long lens street shooting then this can be very flexible.

Comes out to USD $1998 on B&H as of a few minutes ago.

Still trying to wrap my head around US prices. Here in the Philippines, that trio comes out to over USD $3K. :(

You get a small compact Limited (size=one of the reasons I love Pentax vs NiKanon), and you also get 2 fast & weather sealed DA*'s.

Cheers.

I live in a big city, that's typically well lit and very busy at night - and f/2.8 as on the DA40 can be useable at night. Though you will still need to crank up ISO some, especially if you want to completely avoid motion blur due to subject movement.

That said, I don't know about using the DA40 for hip shooting, especially wide open. From my experience, it's too narrow, and it can be hit and miss because DOF can get pretty thin wide open.

I have the DA15, FA31 and FA77, and I previously owned the DA40, and I far prefer the DA15 for street work. (Though I sometimes think the DA21 would be nicer in certain situations). Here's a link to my street set on Flickr, almost all of which have been taken by the DA15.

I've only had the FA31 for less than a month, and I've tried shooting street with it, but I simply haven't warmed up to it as much as the DA15 for street work. But f/1.8 is definitely nice to have in low light, more so for me since I shoot with a K7 :p. But shooting wider than f/4 with the FA31 will entail framing with the VF, not shooting from the hip for me.

Cheers.
