Thank you Bramela for running this challenge, selection of winners, and your thoughtful comments.
I enjoyed this challenge - it definitely caused me to take note of the world around me as I went out photographing. Thank you for your thoughtful comments - being a beginner, all feedback is valuable. And, aren't those towers just a huge statement in the skyline - No wonder so many of us have taken photos of them.
Congrats to Jools!! You did a great job capturing the expanse of the open plains. The lines of the fencing were a wonderful emphasis on accenting the vanishing point.

I guess that I looked at this challenge as a graphic design problem -
My goal was to create an image that took on the style of early 30's and 40's comics - hand drawn with intense colors, very graphic, and the where the objects were shown in unusual angles.

Yesterday was not a great day for photographing - rainy, wet, cold and windy. I was wandering around the waterfront on the other side of the bay, having very little success keeping the lens dry and images interesting - when I came across a small power hub near the docks.
As I was listening to the humming of the electrical station as it sent power out into the community, I realized that I, literally, was being over seen by this tower - very graphic, with it's infrastructure creating this fascinating pattern of grids and diagonals.

I got out of work early and took the opportunity to go Maine Audubon at Gisland Farm. It was a wonderfully warm, peaceful afternoon - there was so much to visually enjoy.
I was intrigued by the cloud formations as they moved across the sky - especially when they were reflected upon the water at the pond. As I was photographing the swallows were swooping around me, the frogs were calling in chorus, and the insects were abuzz. It was just what was needed at the end of the day.
Images were taken with K2000 and pentax 35 mm lens

It has been a peaceful week - and I have had some wonderful opportunities to go out and play with my camera - of course, with dogs in tow - always makes it interesting. I just never know what I am going to see.

I always carry my camera with me for those "just in case" opportunities - little did I know that my camera would be a great source of entertainment when I was stuck in traffic waiting for a road construction crew to move a large piece of equipment. I am sure that the people in the cars around me were quite perplexed.

My son just asked why I composed this image -
I was surprised when I came across these old items in the middle of the woods - there was so much there, strewn about on the floor of the forest, forgotten. The area was quiet, with little light, devoid of the sounds from birds or nature - dead silence.
When contemplating what to photograph I wanted to create simplicity in a composition that was a combination of natural and manmade objects - where the viewer wonders if the items were just thrown on the ground or placed there for one to look at.
The selection for lighting and location was to capture the experience of the surprise discovery when I came across this abandoned place in the woods - muted, dark and somber - a forgotten place that once was vibrant and lush.
We are at a point in time in society where we quickly dispose of things no longer considered useful, purposeful or beautiful - in locations that are deemed unnecessary and out of the way.

We all can recall photos that we saw years ago which surprised us, shocked us, touched us. I can still remember looking through a LIFE magazine seeing the image of a little girl unclothed running down a street after the air strike on Trang Bang.
This image does what I consider most important in a photograph - Evoke emotion - whether positive or negative.
The composition is graphic, uncluttered, and balanced - the lighting is perfect for the subject - the image is strong.
Thank you for sharing your photo! Wonderful job!

I so enjoyed this photo.
The balance of the composition, the vividness of the image, the use of the dark background to focus on the objects and their texture/color/ and shape - great job. I just want to reach into the photo and grab a bite.

I think that you did a wonderful job in this still life - the capture of light through the glass, the translucence of the image, the balance of the composition, and the lighting - great job!!
I look forward to seeing more of your work.

This was taken today at a special gathering to welcome a very new baby into the love of her family and community - She was born 6 weeks premature. Even though she is so tiny, just 4 pounds - she is healthy happy, and thriving.

Still-Life is a study in composition and lighting. The still life photographer makes pictures rather than takes them.
The image is a creation of the artist or photographer - as Adam said in an earlier posting -
Still life photos generally require you to arrange inanimate objects on your own.
The wonderful part of this type of photography is that you are able to create your own image - with your own selection of items that you have arranged to be captured in the environment and lighting of your choice.
There are no rigid rules to follow - just that you have to create the composition.

Thank you for your feed back, and thoughtful comments. Landscape/ panoramic images are so nice when taking images on mountain tops. It is the format I use when I reach peaks when hiking.
Unfortunately I was unable to take the image in the landscape/panoramic format on that day. There was image clutter in the shot, and lots of other people wandering around.

This photo was taken on Cadillac Mountain during National Parks Week on Earth Day 2011.
Cadillac Mountain, in Acadia National Park, is considered to be the first place in America to see the sun rise each day. It's summit is the highest point within 25 miles (40 km) of a coastline on the U.S. East Coast as well as down to the Yucatán Peninsula.

Great Photos - It is always very interesting to see everyones interpretation of the theme.
I am noticing a lot of dialog regarding what is spring. Here in New England, spring is very different than in warmer climates. We do not see butterflies or blooms til mid summer.
My selections were based on the quality of the photo image and the composition.
