Taken at Allerton Park Horse Trials in September 2013 in the late afternoon. I wanted to capture the horse and rider and the environment, but was looking for an image with a little more impact. This light only lasted very briefly before it was gone, but whilst it lasted it look fantastic. I think I took four images of different riders, but this just had something a little extra.

I took the plunge and purchased this lens. I grew tired of waiting for the 18mm - 35mm f/1.8 in Pentax mount. Anyway, the f/1.4 35mm is the best lens I own and have ever used, its razor sharp on my K3 and the focus is silent, fast and accurate. I think this lens is worth every penny and it looks superb on the K3. If Sigma make the f/1.4 50mm in a Pentax mount I will be snapping one up. Sigma, hats off to you, you are really producing some excellent glass these days.

After two days of experimenting with lighting bottles of liquid I finally achieve what I wanted.
Lighting products well is not easy and when you are learning it can be frustrating truing to defuse the light so that the product does not show the lighting modifier in the reflection. On my first attempt I use two strip boxes, the first was set back to create the rim light on the edge of the bottle. The other strip box was used to provide lighting to the front of the bottle. The problem I kept experiencing was you could see reflections of the strip box in on the bottle. When I managed to reduce the reflections, the rim light was just not thin enough. The solution I found was to use sheets of tracing paper in front of the strip box, this resulted in the light being really diffused and i was then able to adjust the rim light by turning the soft box further to one side to get the effect I wanted. I then set the other strip box, but decided its spread was not wide enough, I then used a shoot through umbrella and placed tracing paper in over the umbrella, this worked really well.
What could I improve next time?
I could light the bottle top separately and then merge the images together in photoshop.
I should have used a tripod rather than hand holding the camera.
Use a bigger sheet of reflective perspex so I could place other objects in the frame such as a glass.
I am moving on to jewellery next, so I will no doubt learn a few things through trial and error and i will let you know what I learn and share my experiences.
If anyone has any questions or comments, please post them.
Thanks for looking

I must be stupid, I did not realise this would be posted to the welcome and introductions area though, not really sure how this happened? Still the idea was to let people know about the project and challenge.. Sunday the 12th of Jan 2014 was the first day, but i really got a lot out of it and am looking forward to the next session later on this week.

The only way to get really good at anything is to practise right! Photography is something that a photographer should always be trying to improve and develop and as portrait photography will be a big part of what I aim to be doing, I thought I would set my self a real challenge and see if i can photograph 50 people in fifty days starting from Sunday the 12th of January 2014 and ending on Sunday March the 2nd 2014. If the people who I ask don’t take me up on my offer, I will have to go into town and ask complete strangers. They will no doubt think that I am either mad, or trying to con them. I hope that people will at least talk to me, even if they don’t want a portrait taken

Despite this image looking bright, it was not great light wise in the church. K3, DA* 50-135, all natural light at ISO 3200. During the day the K3 worked very well, I certainly did not miss the K5lls even though it is still a good camera.

Not the most artistic image, but I think this shows the flash on the k3 has been improved.

My K3 arrived yesterday, so the below comments are initial findings so far and not a full on review.
OK a feature that I think deserves a mention is the new Multi Auto WB on the K3, it works very well indeed. I set the K3 on a tripod and a K5lls on a tripod this morning both with same lenses and same settings and took a few images looking out across back gardens with some autumnal leaves. The K3 rendered the colours spot on, the K5lls was still good, but the k3 images just looked far better. I swapped the cards to view in each camera and the images shot with the K3 viewed on the K5lls screen still looked better. I am very impressed with the Multi Auto WB so far.
I shoot a lot of action photography so I have found solutions to some of the AF issues of the K5 and K5ll, I have had a play with the K3's AF-S & AF-A modes and can confirm it is far better than the original K5 and the K5ll. I took some images last night throwing pillows across my living room and rolling a ball across the floor, I know these tests are a long way from photographing action and sports, but the AF did a very good job and I personally think its a big improvement from the K5ll. Next weekend I have press pass for the RAC Rally in the UK, so I will be able to provide a more detailed update in relation to AF system and provide some example images.
The menu system on the K3 is a little different from the K5 & K5ll, but everything still is easy to set and change. Hi ISO Image wise I think its fine up to ISO 3200, but beyond that noise starts have an impact. I think I am going to really enjoy the K3 and am now thinking about selling my other K5lls and getting another K3.

Well I have just sold one of my K5lls's and pre-order the K3. I am now left waiting for Christmas like a child until sometime in November when it arrives.

The audience needed to be within the shot for publication of the event. However, I take your point on isolating the action of the horse and rider.

Thought people might like to see some outdoor portrait work with the Pentax K5lls. All natural light, no reflectors used and the background is a skip (Dumpster)

I have had the K5lls for a few weeks now and have been shooting a lot of fast paced photography and can confirm that for me the K5lls is a big improvement over the original K5. I know it is not up to the Nikon D4 standard, but I just don't have that kind of money. However, I have just been provided with a press pass for a British Eventing event at Chatsworth House next weekend, so people obviously like the image from the K5lls and thats all the matters at the end of the day. Anyway, here is one from this weekend.
