KP battery life improvement

"Can't you already do that by double tapping info and selecting the "off" icon in the flyover menu?"

Of course you can, but that doesn't set Off as a default. The info display comes back on when you turn on the camera. Needing four button presses to turn it off each time is annoying. I wouldn't mind so much if the battery wasn't so pitiful.

Defective battery or defective camera?

Just bought the KP on Wednesday. I'm returning it to B&H on Sunday because of a defective battery. Actually, I don't know if the problem is the battery or the camera, but anyway on a full charge I only got about a dozen shots before getting the "battery depleted" warning. Granted, I was using the menus a lot to set the camera up, and I used Live View a bit also, but I can't believe I drained the battery that fast. Has anyone else noticed weirdness with the battery?

I'm also returning it because for some reason mine only came with two grips, and no hex key to change them. I thought all three and a hex key were supposed to be included...

Looking for very high ISO shots in real world use...

Hi. I'm a K5 owner, and on that camera I only shoot up to 8000 IS0. Anything higher is too much work to clean up. I'm very interested in the low-light abilities of the KP, but I've seen very few examples or real world shooting at very high ISO. Could you KP owners post your very high IS0 shots? How far do you typically go? And how's the AF in low light? Thanks

Section 12 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, actually. This is why they had to send Justin Bieber south, obviously.

In fact, that rule was used to strike down a minimum 3 year sentence for gun possession, last February --

Anyway, we're far adrift from anything pertinent to photography, and I apologize for asking the question here, when I could have asked on a police or government forum. Thanks for your time, Henry. Sorry if I rubbed you the wrong way.

I don't understand why you're dragging your family and their long work hours into this, or why you're so defensive about my "unimaginable" questions. I don't believe in privatizing public resources, you do. We can differ on the point without making it personal. If "bouncers in booze-pouring nightclubs" etc worry you, you should, like me, advocate improving the salaries and benefits for all New York cops, as they serve all members of the public. It seems to me your "threatened" location would be far better protected, in the long run, by a larger, more robust, better-paid and less over-worked police force. As long as private interests with sufficient resources are able to purchase individual pseudo-official police protection, there's little pressure on the city to actually improve things for both the public and for police officers.

You cannot imagine why a resident of this city would prefer that the badge, the gun, the nightstick, the uniform, the training, and the authority of police officers not be for sale to private interests? Really? Unimaginable? OK. Especially in light of the article you just linked to, which informs us:

"To sweeten the deal, the city will even pick up liability costs: if your rented officer happens to apply excessive force or wrench his back, taxpayers will pick up the tab."

Now that makes me question the policy even more.

Again, thanks for the info. Obviously, I don't blame B&H for taking advantage of the policy, if it somehow serves your business interests; the responsibility rests with Kelly and the brass, and with NYC pols for not caring, apparently. Not a big deal.

Apparently, this is a new enough, and constrained enough, policy that even some officers themselves are confused about it:

Interesting phenomenon.

I've been wondering this for some time: why are uniformed New York City Police officers standing guard inside the superstore? I've seen them (on the first floor, near the cashiers) on several occasions. Who's paying for their time? It seems an unusual arrangement, which I've never observed in other New York retail stores. It's common practice for NYPD officers to moonlight as private security, I believe, but these men are in uniform. What's the story?

Interesting that they're using an alleged bit of cosmetic damage to the camera's casing to invalidate your entitlement to a replacement camera. Even if you had caused the external damage, it shouldn't matter. What, where they hoping to fob the defective camera off on someone else, and they're frustrated that the crappy unit ism't pretty enough to get away with that? Pretty sleazy.

I always find these discussions of the "right focal length for portraits" confusing.

Why would it give any more distortion "fairly close up" than any other focal length -- that is, if "fairly close up" was the same distance? The apparent distortion of features, which isn't a quality of the lens, it's simply a fact of perspective, is caused by being close to the subject, not by any quality of the lens, surely? (we can observe the same distortion without a camera at all, simply with our eyes -- the closer we are to the subject, the greater the apparent relative difference in size of objects closer to us and objects further back. Get further away, and things appear progressively "flatter.")

The reason to have a longer lens for portraits, it seems to me, is so that you can get the framing of the subject(s) you want without having to be so close that distortion becomes unflattering. So if you were thinking of framing people with the 35mm as you would with the 50mm, then of course you'll see more distortion, since you're decreasing the distance to the subject. But you can get essentially the same framing by cropping a shot taken with a lens that's allegedly "too wide for portraits" and it will show the same modeling of the features as a longer lens shot from the same distance, no? The advantage of the longer lens in that situation is avoiding cropping, not avoiding distortion. The DAL 35 is quite sharp; cropping shouldn't be a problem, unless you're making huge prints... ?

But that's academic, since you already have the 16-45. I don't see the need for the 35, unless you simply want something lighter and a little faster than the zoom on your camera.

I would keep the F 50 1.7 for when you want more options in regard to narrowing the D0F. (I have that lens -- the AF with mine is so excruciatingly loud that I avoid using it to shoot people :()

Pentax K-5 AF accuracy
Posted By pentup

I don't know whether Pentax truly suffers more than other bodies from this (although from reading many threads here and elsewhere I get the feeling that AF accuracy is not counted among the brand's advantages over other brands, to say the least) but it seems to me what you're observing is a common characteristic for phase detection AF in general.

I noticed also that the AF is much more accurate with my LX-5 point and shoot (even allowing for the much greater depth of field) than with my K-7 and K-5 -- however, it's also slower, and hunts more.
Personally I prefer accuracy to speed, and I don't care as much as many do about hunting and noise and so on -- I just don't see the point of fast AF if the camera isn't focusing correctly so much of the time -- it's like me declaring myself to be a fast, smooth hurdle jumper -- by just running parallel to the hurdles and never over them! I simply hate phase detection and wish we could have the more accurate contrast detection that LV uses, in the viewfinder. Maybe there's some other advantage to phase detection that I'm unaware of; perhaps the knowledgeable members of this forum will enlighten us.

I've basically resigned myself to stopping down often more than I want to, and manually focusing as often as is practicable (I'm totally dependent on quick shift.)
I drove myself nuts with focus adjustments for the K-7; with the K-5, I've decided to just assume that AF is not my friend, and work around it; life is too short to be obsessing over focus charts.

I have the O-ME53, but I want to try one with a little more magnification. And from what I've read, the Tenpa magnifiers are quite nice.

Thanks for the description. That makes me lean toward getting the screen after all.

Yes, I believe so.

This is a dilemma for me; apart from my Nokton 58 f/1.4 and FA 31 ltd I don't have fast glass -- most of my lenses are f/2.8 or slower. Since I got the K-5 partly to be able to shoot in poor light, I'm worrying that a darker screen might make matters worse for me, rather than better, much of the time. I'm thinking about trying the ee-S in combination with the Tenpa magnifying eyepiece someone mentioned before; maybe the extra magnification would compensate a little for the dimmer screen.

I'm very grateful for informative threads like this (but I agree that it shouldn't be confined to the K-5 forum.)

I see now. You're right; that should be considered a bug, and Pentax should fix that in a firmware update.

Actually, it doesn't show this behavior with a hard power off; the ISO you last set is retained. This is why I didn't notice the anomaly: I very rarely let the camera go into standby.
