I recently sold all of my Pentax 645 equipment (NII body and 6 lenses. I wasn't hoarding them but rather using them. Going through my files, I'm struck at how many of my personal favorites were taken with this system. I've long felt the Pentax 645N/NII were the best bargains in medium format. The 645D has taken so many lenses out of circulation and raised the prices to the extent that I can't recommend the system in the same manner as I once did. While I love film, I've become pessimistic about the future of the film that I like to use, and I'm switching more completely to digital. This is not really by choice but by the writing that I see on the wall. No one has a crystal ball, but that's the personal decision I made.

45-85mm f/4.5 SMC-FA. Flawless glass, smooth zoom, crisp focus. Near-mint condition, hood in EX+ condition. Comes complete with original box and packaging, including soft pouch. Includes hood and both caps. $850, includes insured shipping.
SOLD. 35mm SMC-A f/3.5.& Flawless glass, exceptionally smooth focus, one small mark about 5mm x 1mm on the front rim; it's only cosmetic and does not affect function. Includes both caps. SOLD.
200mm SMC-FA f/4. Flawless glass, a few light marks on the hood, very smooth focus, in near-mint condition. Includes hood and both caps. $375, includes insured shipping.
300mm SMC-A f/4. Integrated hood. Flawless glass, a few light scratches on the body (most noticeable is about 1/3"), some light rub marks from the sliding hood. Very smooth focus. $685, includes insured shipping.
645NII camera body, including original box, one 120 insert, three 220 inserts, three insert cases, and two original boxes for the inserts. Also comes with two arca-swiss type tripod attachments for horizontal and vertical tripod mounting, body cap, original Pentax strap, and original owner's manual. The camera performs perfectly. The only thing that keeps this from being described as LN- / EX+ is the leatherette is not firmly attached around two of the flat body edges (it's fine on the grip) This is strictly cosmetic and could be repaired by the new owner with the right glue or re-covered by a shop. The camera and one of the inserts (not sure which one) were CLA'd by Pentax a few years ago, but I cannot find the receipt. This camera is one of the best values in medium format photography, IMO. $775, includes insured shipping.
B+W 58mm MRC circular polarizing filter, in case. Perfect condition, practically never used, but the plastic carrying case is cracked. $93 new, sell for $65 shipped.
Reason for selling: the system is getting too heavy for my aging body. I bought the best; now it will go to new owners.

I've use the 67 with MLU and a 645NII. I eventually went with the 645NII primarily because of weight (which is not, at the moment, an issue for you). I like the lens selection for the 645, and the zooms are generally considered of equal quality to the primes. The 645NII has been my favorite film camera for a long time.
However, with the advent of the 645D, lenses for the 645 are nearly impossible to find. As soon as the 645D was officially announced (after 5 years), KEH sold out virtually overnight. They remain in very short supply even today.

Good grief people, let's get straight on which photo was taken with which camera. The top photo is clearly superior, so folks are assuming it was taken with the 645D. Yet in his post of "Yesterday" (11:01 a.m.), Thomas has identified the top photo as the "Correct 645N scan." Thomas, I wish you would make this more clear for us by stating, "The top photo was taken with the 645x and the bottom photo was taken with the 645y" and fill in the "x" and "y" with the correct letter. We're all over the place on this.

I think folks are confused as to which photo was taken with which camera. If I read this right, the top photo was taken with the 645N (film) and the bottom photo was taken with the 645D (digital). Correct?

Regarding the Canon 1DsMkIII, wasn't this more a test of the 24-105mm lens than of the camera body? Had I wanted to bring out the best in the Canon (knowing it would be compared to medium format digital), I would have selected the 24-70mm or 70-200mm f/4 IS or f2.8 II.

I wanted to "shake up" my vision a bit by using a square format, and I purchased a 501cm with 50mm, 80mm, and 180mm lenses (generally CFI). I'm now preferring the Hasselblad to my Canon 1DsMk3 for certain shots. Some are just more aesthetically pleasing in a square format (but that's certainly not universally true). Also, I've spent far more in digitally photography than I ever did in film; the notion that film photography is expensive is, IMHO, a myth.

This lens was one of 4 (maybe 5) 645 lenses that I sold in recent months. I felt this was the best of the bunch (if one wanted this focal length). My original price was $200, which was based on the standard research (KEH less some, completed ebay auctions, etc.). This is the last lens left, and I've dropped the price to $175 (including all the fees and shipping) simply to move it.

From postings I've read, I was under the impression that the 645D is being sold in Australia. In any event, I know that has no bearing on the U.S. market. Are you a U.S. resident who somehow managed to buy a Pentax 645D from overseas, ebay, or in some other way? If so, how did you do it? What chances did you feel you were taking (e.g., lack of full-fledged reviews, lack of warranty, lack of technical support, etc.)? This appears to be the only alternative for U.S. residents for the foreseeable future, and I'm wondering if it can or should be done. Thanks in advance for any advice or summary of your experiences.

O.k., thanks very much. I understand your not wanting to feed a rumor mill, and for my part, I know the difference between a fact and an opinion. I'm not a corporate executive, just a lowly consumer, so I think in simple terms such as "if they can do all that Henry described in Japan and other countries, why not the U.S.? Also from my limited perspective, I think there would be a huge demand for a camera like the 645D I've seen described. Finally, new cameras are being developed and distributed all the time all over the world; I can't see why the 645D would be such a special case that the company would decide to keep that particular one out of a country that would provide a significant market share. Of course, I have a prejudiced view: I've been waiting for 5 years for this camera. Judging by the run on Pentax 645 lenses all over the country, I know a lot of other people feel as I do. Anyway, thanks for you insider views -- I know what the official line is, and I know yours are just two educated guesses from two individuals. Bottom line is that I don't know when or if Pentax will distribute the 645D in the U.S., and I'll probably decide to buy Christmas presents instead of saving for this camera.

I'm not looking for certainty. I'm looking for an educated guess from someone who knows the photographic community, who knows the Pentax company, who knows how things like this work. Even an educated guess as to whether the 645D will be sold in the U.S. at all would be appreciated. I know, with absolute certainty, that this information will be on your website as soon as you know for sure. I don't want to wait that long, and I'm willing to settle for an educated guess rather than absolute certainty. Realizing that no one is going to hold you to it, won't you just offer your own educated opinion regarding my question? Thanks.
