If you had to choose between the K-5 or the new K-30, which would you pick and why? Both seem pretty much the same size and have very similar specs.
K-5 advantages:
- Stereo mic port
- Metal body
- better battery life
K-30 advantages:
- better AF
- AA battery option
- ??

The above sounds like a good idea to me, but how about this:
Assuming the rear element is long enough that it bumps up onto the mirror. Pentax could add a pin that prevents mounting on older cameras. The lens mounts fine on the K-01, as there is nothing in the way of the pin. However, on all future DSLRs Pentax could make it so the pin pushes into a mechanism that physically pushes the mirror up. Kind of like a mirror lock up button triggered by a pin. When you insert a K-01 lens e.g. into a K-3 body the mirror automatically flips out of the way (even when the camera is off) and you can only use live view mode for taking pictures.
How does that sound? Plausible solution?

Hi forum members,
Probably the main reason why making a mirrorless version of an existing D-SLR mount is the flange distance required between the sensor and the lens. The lens has to be so far away from the sensor, that the body can't be be much tinned than existing SLR bodies, negating the size advantage offered by getting rid of the mirror.
So, how about this idea: Pentax should make a thin mirrorless camera, that uses the standard k-mount and keeps the existing flange distance. It can do this by using a telescoping mechanism on the mount. The mount could retract when the camera is off, creating a really slim body for carrying the camera. Then, when you turn on the camera, the mount and attached lens could extend out the the proper distance, ready for taking the picture.
It would certainly take some clever engineering to get this kind of mechanism working nicely, but Pentax has some great engineers. I'm sure they could pull it off.

The K-5 (without battery) weighs 670 g (1.4 lb)
The K-5 (with battery) weighs 750g (1.6 lb).
The K-r without battery weighs: 515g (18.2 oz)
The K-r (with D-LI109 battery) weighs 598g (20.5 oz)
The K-r (with AA batteries) weighs approx 625g (22 oz)
So, disregarding the heavy weight of AA batteries, the K-5 is about 150g heavier than the K-r, both with and without batteries.
My question is "why"?
Is weather sealing and a larger prism that much heavier?
I'd really love to see an SLR that is both fully featured and really light. Wondering if such a thing is possible...

I just got a Pentax 70mm f/2.4 limited lens. I can't wait to try it out.
One question though: the screw on lens hood + cap is nice, but seems like a waste of space indoors when I'm not concerned about glare. I can take it off, of course, but then I don't have a place to attach the lens cap anymore. I certainly want to protect the lens with a cap whenever possible, so does that mean I need to keep the hood on all the time, too, or are there alternatives?
The screw on thread looks like it might support other kinds of snap-on lens caps.
Has anyone tried this? What alternative lens caps do you recommend for a 70mm lens when going without the lens hood?

Does this light-loss thing only apply to lenses with very big apertures? I'm wondering what practical difference there will be between a 77mm f/1.8 and a 70mm f/2.4 lens in terms of t-stop loss at the sensor-level. Probably none significant, right?

The problem with the K-7 is it's relatively poor high-iso performance. Argueably worse even than the K20d. I'd love a K-r with it's great high-iso but also with WR.
Oh well, I guess I'll wait until next year until the price of the K-5 comes down. Or maybe pentax will soon come out with a model between the K-r and K-5.

With all the talk of the K-r and K-5 there seems to be a gap in Pentax's offering. Where is the mid-range camera successor to the K200d. A K-r would suit my need just fine (upgrading from a K20d for better high-iso and AF), but I sure which it had weather sealing. A K300d model would fill that gap quite nicely.
Has anyone heard anything about such a model?

I'm wondering if there are going to be Limited-series "pancake" lenses with SDM autofocus. It seems kind of backwards to use screwdriver AF on modern lenses like them. Is there any good technical reason not to equip them with SDM? Pentax could release DA* Limiteds with SDM and weather sealing. I'd certainly buy such lenses.
What do you think?

If Pentax had an iPhone app that can be used to remote control their cameras that would be a major "cool" feature. Certainly something to distinguish them from Canikon. I'd say they should invest in this.
Bluetooth is probably sufficient to remote control, with wifi only needed for remote live view. I'd be happy with bluetooth for now. Maybe a version two product could also support remote control of flashes via bluetooth/wifi.

Personally, I'm keenly awaiting the Sigma 85mm f/1.4. But price might somewhat reduce my keenness. I can't afford an arm and a leg either. I'd be happy with an 85mm f/2 (with fast and silent AF).

The amount of interest in the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 (I want one too!!) sure goes to show what an opportunity Pentax has left lying on the table for so long. If only they had released an updated 77mm with SDM, or a 90mm Limited f/2.0, or any kind of fast new prime between 70mm and 200mm. So, now everyone buys from Sigma instead. Oh well. Pentax's loss...

I'm wondering which lenses people consider best for capturing video with the K-7. I don't have a K-7, but I am considering getting one (or the K-8 when it comes out) and want to make sure any lenses I buy will also work well for video.
Questions:- Zoom or Prime?
- 70mm or 77mm for video (the age old debate, but maybe the choice is clearer, if video is a concern)?
- Best aperture to capture video at?
- Can the K-7 autofocus while capturing video?
- SDM vs. Screwdriver motor (focus motor sound could obvious be a problem, but is there any issue besides this - like smoothness of the focus movement)?

Wow, thanks for all the good advice so far.
So, for example, I might use a Pentax AF360 flash (gelled to blue) off camera and as far away from the scene as possible. Maybe also zooming the flash to maximum focal length (as opposed to wide-angle mode)?

I'm trying to create a moody moon-light style lighting effect in an indoor shoot (darkened room).
I want to make it look like a moon-light night, but at the same time also want to show clear details in all the people in the room. Definitely not silhouette. I also want enough light to be able to use a reasonably fast shutter speed - something like 1/30 - without pushing the ISO beyond 1100.
I'm imagining something like movie "night" lighting that simulates night without sacrificing detail and providing enough light for the cameras to record the action.
Can anyone suggest a way to achieve such a lighting effect? Are there cheap ways to achieve it, without requiring a full studio setup?

I was thinking of buying the Pentax/Tamron 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3 lens.
But when I looked at amazon, bhphotovideo, and adorama it doesn't seem to exist anymore. Even Pentax's own site's "buy" link doesn't work:

I'm hoping for some more affordable primes. Something with good image quality, but otherwise no-frills. E.g. a 50mm f/2 and 85mm f/2.
There was also talk of a 150mm f/2.8 Limited somewhere on this forum.
+1 for a K-7 with better high-ISO quality

I'd love to see a 135mm prime from Pentax. I'd probably buy anything with a focal length from 90mm to 150mm and an aperture faster than f/2.8. If it is f/2.8 or slower, no point. Just get the 50-135mm DA*. Small size is, of course, desirable, but I'd rather have an SDM focus motor than a super-compact form-factor. Maybe a semi-limited, small but not pancake ;)
Something like 108mm f/2 would be very nice ...
