If it's the Yongnuo range then they're very good (IMO) but they are fully manual-only... The Sigma's I believe use P-TTL which might suit your needs more...
I work in a theatre and if you used flash during a performance you would be asked to leave...

I'm sorry I've got no fixes in the short term but it sounds like the K-01 would be a much better camera for you in the long-term mate...

You're going to end up with a half-dozen camera bags whatever you decide so the best advise I can give is 'save some cash and buy used'
Hopefully at some point you'll have the '3 perfect bags' : 1) the small 'city' shoulder... 2) the carries 'all' shoulder... 3) the 'outdoor/landscape' backpack (with room for waterproofs, lunch etc)...

FA35 is the lens that is attached to my K-x when it comes out of the bag... I love it... It's my 'snapshot' lens for capturing the moment...
However... If I'm doing landscape I switch out to the FA28 or Tamron17-50... If I'm after bokeh I switch out to the FA50... Macro or candids from afar, the D-FA100...
It's a bloody great walkaround... But it is not a 'do-it-all'...
But that's OK as I have a DSLR and can switch out lenses depending on the requirements I need...

I'm at work right now (I work part time in the university art gallery) and one of the campus security guys just came in...
We're talking photography and he says "What do you shoot? Canon or Nikon?"
I kinda laugh... " I shoot Pentax actually"
His jaw dropped... "No way!?" (at which point I was waiting for the quizicles) "ME TOO!" he says "I've got a K-x!"
I think I'm going to have to loan him some glass now! LOL!

I agree... I just wonder why?
I really don't understand the logic behind the 'XS' line of lenses... K-01 is K-mount and as such can use the current DA, DA* and DA-Ltd lenses that are already in production... Surely they should be pushing the lenses that are in production on K-01 users...
The 40mmXS is smaller than the 40mmLtd but why? The Ltd is already (really) small... What's the point?
Now Pentax just sell less 40mm-Ltd's as it's in competition with itself selling the XS-version...
If it is a 15mmXS then they'll be selling less 15mm-Ltds shortly... Why? I don't get it...
The pentax community doesn't appear to be complaining about the lenses that are currently in production... We love them right? We don't need replacements of perfectly good glass...
What we have been asking for is an expansion in the line-up... More lenses of different focal lengths that are preferably fast (and cheap in some cases)
So what is the game plan here?
Are they trying to move away from the ability to manually focus?
Is the DA Ltd line surreptitiously being phased out and replaced?

Could the Misc primes in the lens reviews section be alphebetised by ascending focal length?
This would look loads better and make the resource a tad more usable.

I picked up a *istDS for my lad a few weeks back for £95 (paid another £19 for an FA80-200 and had a FA35-80 lying around, so he has a usable kit.)
At a family party on sunday I got better shots with his camera than with my own K-x... A very capable DSLR it is indeed...
For the price they can be obtained at (with patience), those on a tighter budget looking for a spare or second body should IMHO still consider it...

Thanks again all... Just an update... He filled the 2gb memory card by lunchtime... Had to go through with him and delete some so he could keep shooting (need to do firmware update so can use bigger card!!)
Had a great day and he got some really good shots... He's going to go through them with grandad and make a set of his best 12 for printing!!
Here are a few of mine (with Joe modeling his *istDS)... Some of my shots needed quite heavy cropping... Need me a BIGMA if this is going to be a regular family outing!!
That said I think the 50-200mmWR performed very well!

Worse is when you load the film right, and know you have a load of good shots when you get to the end of the film and in your excitement to put more film in forget to rewind and just open the camera door wide open...
I reckon anyone who shoots film has don something stupid twice...

Why not replace his Canon film body with another Canon film body... ?
That way he can still use his Canon lenses...

Joe is the same... He has a laptop at his Grandads and he's easily a fluent as I am!
The *istDS arrived this morning... Came with a 2Gb card inside which I wasn't expecting... Bonus!
I slammed a set of Eneloops inside and it appears to be working AOK but as I'm not too familiar with the model and no manual was supplied I have a few Q's...
Does the *istDS shoot RAW or just Jpeg - I can't find a RAW function in the menu system...
The AF is considerably slower than my K-x... Normal? (I know there an age gap... just checking)
WHY DOES THE K-x NOT HAVE A TOP SCREEN???!!?!? IT'S BRILLIANT!!
Cheers again for all the help... He's going to love it so much when I hand it over and say "By the way...You might need this..."

Improved 'Quallity Control' in the manufacturing stage should in my opinion be the top of Pentax's list of priorities!!
They'll undoubtebly make a brilliant camera but if the new models have 'sensor-stains' or crappy 'e-dials' then they may as well give up the ghost!!
Hoping they've employed a team to do proper quality control tests before the ship...
Reputations are not easilly built but easilly wounded...

That will inevitably change... I don't know anyone with 'the perfect bag'... I have about 5 at the moment, none of them are perfect...
I'd get a first bag that's just a little to big... That gives you room to fill it with your next couple of purchases...
I personally dream of a '3-bag-set-up' :
1)The car bag - A big shoulder bag that can hold everything I own...
2)The city bag - A shoulder bag to hold camera and lens (prime) with room for a spare lens (prime or zoom) and a flash...
3)The trekking bag - A rucksack to hold camera, 2/3 lenses, filters, STUFF and hold the tripod...

Although I think your technical advice (although limited) is sound, the tone in which you began and subsequently phrased your response came across as somewhat arrogant and rude...
I would remind you that this is a 'Beginners Forum' so in all likelyhood... Yes... There will be one of these advice threads every day.
By taking on board the advice and experience of others... We learn...
If you do not have the patience to deal with those starting out in photography (as we all have done) then can I suggest that you try an alternative forum; or simply do not respond to the questions of others unless you feel you have developed the capacity to respond in a manner befitting an actual human being.
You may have angered me...

Dave

Seriously... Youtube can be used as a really valuable resource... There are some great (and very poor) tutorials and lectures on there if you dig around a bit...

To be fair Mike I don't think anyone has given you an ear full of crap and your attitude kinda sucks... I'm hoping you just had a bad day...
This is a beginners forum so taking your bat and ball home and having a cyber-tantrum is: a) fairly unhelpful and: b) makes you look like a pr**k...
Why bother being plain argumentative?!
Normally your advice is sound... You are a credit to this forum...
In this instance however I reckon you let yourself down...
Sorry, but I felt it had to be said (out loud.)...

I pretty much use Ilford XP2-400 B&W film exclusively... Negs can be developed on a normal colour set-up which makes it very easy to get developed in-store...I really should learn to develop my own negs but the store scans them to DVD too as part of the price...

I've always struggled to shoot fireworks, so this thread has been really valuable to me... Cheers to all those who explained with example shots!
I do shoot quite a lot of long exposure shots however, so I really feel the need to 'preach' a little on:
I firmly believe you have a piece of your camera missing.
Without a tripod exposures slower than 1/20 of a sec become extremely problematic, and your DSLR is capable of so much more... Without a tripod water will never be like silk and you'll never have the pleasure of running around with torches, painting with light, or experimenting with 10 stop ND filters!
Some believe that you must have a massively expensive tripod... Me, I reckon a cheap tripod is better than no tripod... If it can hold the weight of you camera and lens in a breeze it's better than not having it...
I implore you to buy a tripod, even if it's just a gorilla-pod that you wrap around your camera bag strap... I can't imagine not being able to plan and take long exposure shots and I genuinely feel you're missing out!
Heartfelt rant and preach over... Dave done...
