Stuck aperture ring on A 50 1.7

I wouldn't reccomend dissassembling it unless you have experience. Unless of course you want a pile of parts in a ziplock bag :). I think the aperture "stop" thing is a little bearing that is pushed by a spring into a detent and releases when you push on the button. It is tricky to get it back together. Sell it on ebay as a parts lens. Someone who knows how will snap it up and repair it. Or you could try jiggling it to get it in the A position. If you get it there, you never need to move it again. The plastic aperture rings on the A series are kind of crappy. I have heard the M series rings are much more durable.

I can't find much info on this lens online. I got it of ebay for $20. Still trying to get the focus nailed down.

LBA: What to get next (to replace kit 18-55)?

Have you considered the Sigma 17-70? A little wider, more reach, HSM, onboard IS, $450. Or as the poster above recommended, a fast 50 is fun. I picked up a Pentax-A SMC 50mm 1.7 in great shape for $70 on ebay. I also got a nice Sigma 28mm 2.8 manual focus that is prety shap and a lot easier to focus than the 50mm. I'd go with a fast 50 first. Lots of fun (but focus can be a bit trying at times). I bought an "A" version that has automatic aperture but I think the build quality of the "M" version is better but you will have to use the stop-down metering which is a bit of a pain in the butt sometimes.

Sigma 17-70mm... OS HSM version worth the extra $$

"Hand-held, with Shake Reduction (50 mm lens, 75 mm equiv.)

Image stabilization delivers visible results but they are not as impressive as on some of the other systems that we've seen. It generates an advantage of approximately one stop. It appears to be slightly more efficient at very slow shutter speeds where it significantly increases your chances of getting a usable shot and therefore certainly provides a real benefit in many shooting situations."

Pentax K-x Review: 13. Performance: Digital Photography Review

Sigma claims 4 stops improvement but I have read that in practice it is closer to 3. If this is the case, it seems to make sense to disable the in camera stabilization and to use the lens stabilization. I've also read that the Sigma in-lens OS constantly has the gyro spinning (or something like that... supposedly you can hear it in constant use even if it is turned off) so that turning off the IS doesn't save on batteries as much as if it were truly disbled.

Sigma 17-70mm... OS HSM version worth the extra $$

I am considering buying this lens. Anyone have an opinion if the OS + HSM is worth the extra cost? I have heard that the Sigma OS claims 4 stops of improvement while the Pentax SR give approx 1 stop. Also, does the in lens OS eat a lot of batteries?

You're right. I missed it. Probably not a great deal but I don't think that these come up for auction that often. Hopefully it is a good copy. Thanks.

I just snagged this on ebay. I didn't see it in the reviews (not the macro II version anyway). I got into a heated bidding war and ended up winning it for $100 (shipping included). Decent deal? Anyone here have this lens?

Sigma 18-50mm OS HSM 2.8-4.5 opinions?

3.5 vs 2.8 is 2/3 of a stop isn't it? Anyway, I guess the HSM and in lens OS aren't worth the exta $$? Is the image quality about the same? I would like an upgrade over the DAL 18-55 but don't want to spend a whole lot of money.

Sigma 18-50mm OS HSM 2.8-4.5 opinions?

I'm looking far a replacement for my DAL 18-55 kit lens. I found the Sigma 18-50 F 2.8-4.5 OS HSM on amazon for $199. I can't seem to find this lens in the lens database here (not with the OS and HSM anyway). This seems like a really good deal to me.... anyone have any experience with this lens? Would it bo a nice step up from the kit DAL 18-55?
