Decided to play with my M42 adapter on my K-x and came up with this lovely abstract shot. I used a Mamiya/Sekor 50mm f2 and shot ISO 400 (don't know the aperture). I'm getting used to fiddling with Adobe Photoshop Elements and I evened out the light/dark balance as best as I could. Tell me what you think! :D

Nature Flowers and experimentation with tungsten film

Hi everyone! I'm back after burning out from a stressful semester, but it was worth it! Now I have a Master's degree and can get back - for the time being - to my beloved hobby of photography (at least one of two: the other being illustration)! In invested in a dedicated 35mm scanner (a Plustek Opticfilm 7400) and started scanning my tungsten slides I took with my K1000 back in March. It took the blue tungsten hue right out of the pictures and made some amazing captures! :D

Here are the details on these three photos.

Camera: Pentax K1000
Film: Fuji T64 tungsten slide film
Lens: Tamron Adaptall-2 35-135mm f/3.5-4.5 (40A)
Location: Texas Tech Campus
Date taken: March 2011
Other details lost to me because I had to scramble to graduate and apply for my second M.A. program starting in autumn.

EDIT: I realize now that I included a pic of berries so it's not entirely about flowers. :)

It was kind of a bit hard to focus in the slightly low light. I thought I could get it without a flash and sometimes things look in focus with a microprism, but then it isn't. I'm still an amateur, though.

One of my students told me about a game night that his club was having, so I stopped by. I had my K1000 loaded with some T-Max 400 when these little soldier game pieces caught my eye (I have no idea which board game this is). I thought this one turned out pretty well. What do you think? Constructive critique/criticism is welcome! :)

I don't know if everyone has heard about the "Super Moon," but it's when the Moon is full and at its closest distance to Earth in its elliptical orbit (it has been in the news recently, but I had never heard of it until I read about it last week). I thought I was going to miss out on it due to bad weather that was due in in Lubbock, but fortunately the sky had cleared up after it threatened to rain and I went for it. It looks like any other picture of the Moon, but I wanted to get a shot of it anyways.

LOL, I took a trip to the Roswell area today to see the parks near there (and the UFO museum, of course :D). At Bottomless Lakes State Park, I was photographing the sparrows on the old Civilian Conservation Corps Lea Lake water tower when I happened to luck into this shot on manual exposure with my K-x! It looks like he's cocking his head at me and asking "Whatcha' doin'?"

I was out in Mackenzie Park in Lubbock with my K-x and an old Nikon 35mm when I saw this crow. I had the big Tamron lens on the K-x so I shot several pics, including this one which is cropped from the original. What a dirty look.

LOL dadipentak. Most definitely not a good time to change them. :) I kept the kit lens on my K-x all day and kept the K-x in my backpack until I snapped a few photos, immediately putting it back after taking the photos. I still need to wipe my camera off pretty well, but the graduate papers I've been writing for my classes have kept me busy all week. D:

Hi PGillin,

I'm sorry if I had offended you in any way, I was going after a broad range of people who kept telling me about how I should quit shooting film because this is the modern age, etc. (like my aunt, etc) I am certainly surprised (and love it) when I see much younger people shooting film and not trampling all over it because they know nothing about it (because digital is so easily available). Seeing people like you shoot film gives me a bit of hope!

I said quite a bit out of passion for film, and when I blow my top, I can really blow it. And seeing that former Kodak corporate jerk's wish to get rid of film really set me off. At that moment, all the rage that had been building from a variety of people insulting my film shooting (a lot of younger people, my much older aunt, random people, etc.) just poured out. So I am very sorry if I offended you due to your age. When you've been insulted for being old-fashioned for a long time, like me, it can really make frustration build up. Everybody's got the right to rant every once in a while, and sometimes when people like me hold their rage in, it can explode; and I felt that this was the right place to do it.

Once again, I'm sorry if I insulted anyone because I was expressing a bit of frustration. A lot of factors came together like planets aligning and caused me to vent a little; and everyone can lose their cool a bit when they vent.

You are right, for the most part. But I don't like it when all-digital people tell me off for shooting film (I do shoot digital, too by the way) and how people like Jeffery Hayzlett want to destroy the medium, all just to line their pockets.

Now that I've heard some voices of reason, I can finally calm down. I don't have too many places to express an opinion like I have, but hearing what Jeffery Hayzlett's ultimate dream was while he was at Kodak really set me off. And when I get set off, I go until I run out of steam.

Just to be clear, I'm not anti-change; but I appreciate the past and I hate to see people disregard it such a disdainful manner like I've seen a lot of people do recently.

How about we all call a truce?

I will shoot film like mad for a long time to come (especially after I buy a dedicated film scanner) and continue to fight against anti-film ignorance into the future (in a less ranting and ragey way, of course). The art community will keep film alive.

Hearing that story about my uncle shooting pictures of his friend's little daughter really terrified me, though; all because of the cheapness of someone being able to shoot 10000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 00000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 pictures without having to learn from any mistakes, to post them immediately to a shallow Facebook page and gripe about how they had to pick up a book and read it for school (I hate Facebook, by the way).

In several years the people will have to replace their outdated models with the latest one not realizing that when they do, they will have probably spent as much as an average film shooter did in prints, etc, while cameras like my grandfather's Kodak Brownie made in 1946 still work and take lovely pictures. Digital will never even begin be able to match film's feel…ever.

And whatever happened to patience? The modern world wants to go too fast in my opinion, and that's the reason why modern people get burned out so easily: they go too fast. That goes for workplace demand, etc. We need to chill the freak out and slow down. That's why modern people make so many mistakes.

I feel like my uncle who gave me my K1000. He said that sometimes he doesn't even recognize the world anymore, that it has changed too dramatically, especially since the dawn of the 21st century.

Hi all,

I am truly sorry about calling everyone who's 100% digital a Philistine. It's just that reading Jeffery Hayzlett's words made me snap like a twig. I bet he has dreams about getting rid of Super 8 and 16mm. My rage was directed at (mostly) him and I apologize for hurting other's feelings. It's just that I get a lot of that "Film should disappear" crap from everybody and after a while the rage just builds.

I am very hesitant to go 100% digital and just kick film by the wayside. Sometimes I feel like I'm fighting an uphill battle against snotty younger people (and I mean people who are younger than me by 10 years or more, since I'm almost 30) and older people who kicked film to the curb (like my aunt). One time I got laughed at for asking for slide film at the camera shop and it took all the inner strength I had to not bite people's heads off.

Once again, I am sorry if I insulted any all-digital people, but I am very passionate about film. It helped me improve my photography and really helped me get into it.

Hello, I thought that this might be the best place to post this, and I apologize for the ranting attitude.

I read on the Kodachrome Wikipedia article that former Kodak CMO Jeffery Hayzlett's mission while at Kodak was to make film a thing of the past. All I could think of when I read that was (every derogatory expletive in the book). My aunt told me at Christmas that film needs to disappear. I've also heard this from several other people who think it's odd that I still shoot film.

I get so upset every time I hear someone say "Film needs to disappear!" Have people forgotten that the best movies/the most iconic pictures were all shot on film? I heard a terrifying story from my uncle who shot a picture of his friend's young daughter with his film camera and then the kid thought that she would get to see a digital image in the camera. Is this the terrible, sterile, mediocre world of the 21st century that's to come?

Hearing "Film needs to disappear!" makes me want to take a baseball bat to every digital camera I see (sometimes I even want to turn on my lovely K-x, but I would regret having then thrown away $500). I really hope that film doesn't die because of 100% digital Philistinery. (Yes, that's right, I call 100% digital people Philistines). Film has declined because people are cheapskates. There are Philistine jerks that want film to disappear all in the name of "progress" and profit, like Jeffery Hayzlett.

If film were to disappear, it would be like my childhood vanishing right before my eyes. Sometimes I just hate the 21st century.

Grr… I needed to vent that.

Hi Sailor,

Yes, I am. I teach French at Texas Tech as a Graduate Part-Time Instructor: a fancy word for a graduate student who teaches and studies (and therefore gets no sleep :D). I'll graduate with my first Master's Degree this May and then go on to get my second one this fall in Applied Linguistics if everything goes as planned.

Thanks, slowpez. I love taking my self-portrait in mirrors. When I can get to it, I'll post a link to a really beautiful one that I took with my Soviet Kiev camera (not on Kodachrome though). I shot three of my four Kodachrome rolls with the K1000 and the final roll I shot with the Kiev. I had a skylight filter on all my lenses for the K1000 and none for the Kiev. Man, the Kiev pictures looked like they were taken in the 60s. :D

Here's the 80s horror pic I was telling you about. I don't know why I call it that, I just remember seeing images like that from 80s horror movies. LOL

I had to change to the smaller one for the other one because the SMC Pentax-A 35-70mm F3.5-4.5 wasn't fast enough to record an image in such low light.

I decided to take a chance and get myself on Kodachrome 64 (while I still had the chance to develop it) in very low light. It paid off! :D This was the last frame on this particular roll (out of four that I bought for $17.99 USD a pop!)

I am very fortunate to have succeeded in this, as I had only the kit lens that came with the K1000 my uncle gave me (the old, trusty SMC Pentax-M 50mm F2). The other one I tried with the SMC Pentax-A 35-70mm F3.5-4.5 looked like something from an 80s horror/thriller movie poster. Maybe I'll post it sometime soon.

Hi everyone,

I thought I would post a nice picture of a butterfly ("papillon" is French for "butterfly" if you didn't know) that I took in October 2010 with my K1000 and Elite Chrome. This was taken at Texas Tech's Horticultural Gardens. The whole place was swarming with them which made me happy for some reason.
