K1 stuck in manual mode

Dear colleagues,

This bug is not a software issue.
One guy from St-Petersburg, Russia, had this problem in the end of May and already solved it.
Less than a week in the service and he is happy again.
Official russian serviceman sad that some contact was lost. Repair is not long and complex, but it is hardware issue and you need to go to the service.

I think it will be often case, so do not lose the time in discussions :)

Again, it's definitely hardware issue, some contact is lost,
repair is easy and not very long,
but you need to go to the service.

I tried your method but can not repeat this bug.
So, I've got the third one. On Sunday my camera turned off after nearly 20 minutes and 200 shots. Battery replacing solved the problem, but I'm so tired of all this lottery and today will go to the service.

We have allready discussed absolutely the same problem in Russian Pentax community. It's not a software bug, it's hardware issue. One guy allready returned his camera after a week of repairing. You definitely need to go to the service.

1. I had problems with mirror not only in live-view mode like you, but in standard mode too. Camera started to shoot some kind of "double-exposure" pictures with two-headed and four-armed people. And I think that camera is trying to do picture in the mirror lock up mode by itself, without me :) Of course it's hardware problem because of new mirror mechanism.
2. After firmware upgrade to 1.10 version both problems (in live-view mode and in standard mode) are gone in my camera. But I am not sure that problems are gone forever. May be I can not repeat yet the beginning conditions of the bug. Your information is very useful - 1.10 version of firmware does not fix hardware problems.

I had the same problem with K-1 mirror and firmware 1.00.
Now I'm testing 1.10 firmware and not faced with the problem yet.
Please, tell us which firmware version do you use?

Right, but situation is that we have all the same just now.
During PhotoForum-2016, best Russian annual photo event, official distributor have delivered production version of the camera.
At first two days we had an opportunity to try pre-production version of K-1, and had no chance to put SD-card into it.
But at Saturday, April 16, they give us camera delivered from Japan by airplane and nothing was forbidden.
A lot of people have tried a lot of lenses. Officially. Yeah :)

In my system too.

I have tested it for some time and I think it's sharper than any other Pentax 645 lens.

My last Pentax crop-DSLR was k20d, and nowadays I'm not the owner of both 645D and 645Z cameras, but after comparing them for nearly two weeks - I want to buy K-3 in addition to my 645D :)

Necessarily SD-card performance for 645Z ?

I've tested my SDHC Transcend cards on 645D and 645Z:
old, non UHS-I, 20 reading / 20 writing Mb/s
and new, UHS-I, 95 reading / 85 writing Mb/s

New UHS-I card does not help 645D at all - because of processor Prime II limitation.
But it helps 645Z a lot - twice faster saving files and twice longer series in RAW at speed 1.0 Fps.
So, I can not recommend old non UHS-I cards for 645Z - it's better to buy only new cards.

645 25mm or 28-45mm

My personal preferences on the wide angle are moderate. My FA 45 on 645NII (~28mm in equivalent) and FA 35 on 645D (~28mm in equivalent) are enough for me. Such ultra-wide focus ranges as ~16mm (DFA 25 on film) or ~20mm (DFA/DA on 645D/Z) or ~22mm (DA 28-45 at 28mm on 645D/Z) or ~22mm (A/FA 35 on film) are not really needed in my practice. So, DA 28-45 is much more attractive for me than DA/DFA 25 in terms of focus range. But what to do with FA 35 and FA 45 that I allready have? :)

645Z Arrived - Post your questions here!

Dear Adam,

Thank you for establishing good relationships between Pentax users community and Ricoh-Pentax officials.
You have done a lot for all of us. If you can help, please ask Ricoh-Pentax several questions:

1. May be I'am dumb, but I can not find exactly data about Pentax 645 bayonet diametr.
It's not a secret for many bayonets of other producers.

2. How many Gb of DDR RAM has 645D and 645Z?
For example: when Leica launched S instead S2, they said that S2 had 1Gb and now S has 2Gb.
For example: when Phase One launched IQ250, they said that it has 2Gb instead 1Gb in IQ260 and IQ280.

3. When Pentax K-3 was launched, Ricoh-Pentax said that there is a new motor in the body and it will help screw-driver lenses to work faster.
Does 645Z has new motor too, or it is the same as in 645D?

4. Dynamic range of 645D was not a secret - 11.5 f-stops. Competitors of 645Z on the same Sony sensor Hasselblad H5D-50c and Phase One IQ250 have 14 f-stops. What is the exactly data for Pentax 645Z?

Sincerely yours, Dmitry aka managger

I've tested 645z for 12 days, sometimes with my 645d.
1. Colour of 645z is good enough, but 645d can be better at ISO 100 and 200, may be 400, but not at 800 and 1600.
And of course only if you have a photo, because 645z can catch much more than 645d.
2. Tonal range of 645z is 14 f-stops, 645d has 11.5 f-stops. And "black & white" photos of 645z are better too.
3. Noise of 645z is much better, because it has modern CMOS inside, not CCD. ISO 800 is great, ISO 1600 is very good, ISO 3200 is very good too, but only if your exposure is correct. If not, and you need correction in RAW-converter - you will have to use noise reduction a little bit.
4. Autofocus, fps, recording files on an SD card and so on - 645z is much faster, new processor Prime III is a real beast.
5. 86000 rgb pixels for exposure metering are better then 77 grey zones of 645d. 645z is better, especially against sun.
6. 30% more pixels of 645z are clearly better.

If I will have both of them - I will use 645d with ISO range locked on 100-400 only, and for not-moving objects only ;)
645z is much more versatile camera.

645z metadata: production & shutter count

Thank you!
My problem was that I used "windows executable drag and drop" version 9.68 and now 9.69
It's enough to check a lot of data, but not a shutter count.
But may be it is something like "not final" version of ExifTool...

Then I've downloaded "command line" 9.60 "stable version".
It's not so comfortable to use when I need to check plenty of files from different cameras,
but it's really shows the shutter count. It's enough to solve the problem.

Hi there,

1. Three years ago we discussed 645D serial numbers at our forum:
https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/48-pentax-645d-medium-format/155756-10-00...l-numbers.html

Nowadays we can play the same game with 645Z. Unfortunately PhotoMe cannot help us anymore - it cannot show all the chapter of 645Z files where was interesting data from 645D, but I have found that ExifTool can do it both with 645D and 645Z files.

For example, first sample from offical Japan website was made by camera that has:
Manufacture date 15-January-2014
and Internal serial number 1025
It's normal, because as 645D as 645Z were marketed in June (2010 and 2014) and first samples from official website were made by cameras produced in January too.

Another example: 645Z I've tested for dozen of days has:
Manufacture date 10-June-2014
and Internal serial number 1000688
I don't know yet what does it mean "1000 688", may be simply "1688" may be not,
but if we will share with each other this data from our 645Z cameras - we can understand when and how many cameras were produced.
And another interesting thing is that in the files we can find real serial number that printed on the bottom of the body.

2. The second issue is shutter count. When I use my 645D with somebody's SD cards and don't format them before shooting - camera will catch the numeration order from alien SD card. If I use PhotoMe or ExifTool, I easily can find correct number of shot, and then easily rename current file in computer. After that 645D will catch proper numeration order and I can keep wathing on my shutter count.

But nowadays PhotoMe cannot help us with 645Z files, and ExifTool unfortunately too.
There are plenty of us on PentaxForums, may be you use some different software, that can help with this issue?

Sincerely yours, Dmitry aka managger

As I see, it's really different version. It's PDCU 5.1 not 5.0 that comes with K-3.
Everything works with DNG from 645Z and Windows 32bit/64bit.

Thank you again :)

Hi there,

I have found that my PDCU 5.0 version S-SW140 that comes with K-3
does not see DNG from 645z and cannot convert it.
Colleagues advised me to find PDCU 5.0 version S-SW150 that comes with 645z.

I'am very asking owners of 645z to share disk image of S-SW150,
it will be helpfull for all of us.

1. My very first impressions about new 645D:
https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/16-pentax-news-rumors/256443-z-countdown-16.html#post2774020

2. My friend took a picture in the end of first day of Moscow PhotoForum-2014:
Gallery.ru /

I gave my 645D with FA 120/4 Macro - for the Pentax-guy in the center.
And in the other hand he hold new 645D with tilted LCD and FA 33-55/4.5

Yesterday I've visited Ricoh-Pentax exposition at Moscow PhotoForum-2014.

We can only "look at" new 645D.

- Specifications and official announce will be literally very soon.
- Body is the same (I was with my 645D), the only difference is tilted LCD.
There is a red button for live-view.
- So as LCD is mobile now, buttons under and to the right of 645D LCD - moved right, to thumb zone.
And now K-3 control style is obviously guessed.
- Video option is on board. Swith of photo/video is on the little wheel, where was the focus point selector.

Unfortunately, there was no opportunity to shoot, and that is why I can write soon only "preview".

You can click on "original size" and download every photo.
If you want to download all photos at once (in original size) - here you are two archives:

2. So, I have found his direct words about this subject in the neighbor thread:
https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-medium-format-645-6x7-645d/214034-...ml#post2269456
"Real macros I didn’t yet test out very deeply. What I noticed is a vignetting on aperture 2.8 for about 0.5 – 1 stop in the corners."

He did not speak about "dark corners" - he speak about "vignetting" !
As for me, "dark corners" means that the lens is not a "full-frame" on 56x41,5mm,
and "vignetting" means little worsening in the corners at the open aperture on 44x33mm, nothing more.

3. I can add some information to this question.
Have a look at the standart focus-chart:
DI_04313.jpg - Pentax 645D test DFA 90/2,8 indoor - managger -

Click on original photo: 7264 x 5440 (14,4 Mb)
Pay attention to the corners - the text "3 1/8" is slightly worse than the text "2 3/4".
It's absolutely normal I think, because every lens performs it's best in the center,
and of course starts to decrease resolution sooner or later, especially at open aperture.

Thank you, my observations are the same, and thoughts are the same too :)

90mm on 645 film?
Posted By managger

Yesterday I received first film from photo laboratory. Wonderfull full-frame (56x41,5mm) lens, no any darkness in the corners.
Neither during shooting (in the viewfinder of 645NII), nor in photos. Neither with the open aperture at infinity, nor with closed aperture of course.
Wait a little - I'll show the samples from film camera. Technical quality of the lens is also excellent.

1. May be at the very close distance he catch the shade from the lens hood,
it's noticeably bigger than lens hood of the FA 120mm/f4.0 Macro.

2. Or may be it's my mistake and I do not see defects, because of overall admiration about the lens :)
In any case, wait a little - I'll show the samples from digital camera too.
But my first impression is the same: no darkness in the corners at 44x33mm sensor.
