I've always liked this image, even if it is a bit of a cliche, New England church in winter. I think it has to do with the blue sky, classic lines and white snow. Without the cars it could go for a schlocky "New England" calendar.

OK, we've got the "M" club, the "K" club etc etc. I thought I'd do something a bit different. I want you to reach into the bottom of your bag, or rummage on that top inaccessable shelf of your closet and get out some of the better lenses you have but don't use as much as you should. Yeah, I know that the new super zoom is nice and sexy, and your favorite macro never fails you, but what about some of the others? You know, the ones you really liked but haven't taken out lately? Let's see some shots from your "lonely lenses". Who knows, maybe you will fall in love all over again. I'll start it off with two of mine that haven't seen enough work lately. All shots with the K10D
First of all the Pentax A 35-105 F3.5. Nice lens, a teensy bit soft at f3.5 but still useable, and one of the best as far as color rendition is concerned.
Henry Moore sculpture with water spinkler in the backgound.
Daylily, just check out how well the color is rendered. BTW the lens has a decent "macro" (read close up) function that works along the full range of the lens.
My next "lonely lens" is the Pentax FA 20-35 F4.0. Don't know why I don't use this lens more often, it's almost a perfect garden lens. The wide end is certainly handy, and it can get pretty close as you will see. And is it sharp? Sharp enought to cut!
This shot will make you blink for sure!
And here is a "landscape" type shot
So go grab one [or more] of your unused lenses and get shooting! Let's make those lonely lenses feel wanted! And post them here.

"The stars though have in plus weather sealing and SDM autofocus. And of course a gold ring for bragging rights."
This only applies to the newer DA* lenses, the older FA* lenses are NOT weather sealed nor do they have SDM focus.
The story about the original FA ltd's is that they were designed by Pentax's senior engineer for his own personal use. They weren't supposed to be production lenses, but they performed so well that Pentax decided to produce them for market.
But as to the difference between the "*" and the "ltd's" I have no real idea, methinks it is merely some sort of marketing ploy.

Well, I took out one of my neglected lenses today, the Pentax FA 20mm F2.8. It's not a brutally sharp lens, but certainly sharp enough, and it renders colors beautifully, and, I don't really know how to describe it...it just has really nice...character I'd guess you'd call it. "Smooth" maybe is the best word to describe this lens. Also very easy to manually focus.

What I want to know is what kind of bon bons it disperses if you nail the shot. Also if you totally mess up the exposure settings does it zap you?

I'm in. This time I will explore how the K-135mm f/2.5 and the A 50mm 1.7 match up with the K-1. I know I said I'd do that this month, but acquiring the Irix 150mm macro took up all of that time. I will admit that the Irix has helped me hone my manual focusing skills that will be a big help this month.

I'm in. This month I'm going to try to focus on some of the vintage lenses I have. By "vintage" I mean K and A lenses for the most part. I've got 135mm f/2.5, 300mm f/4 and 50mm 1.2 K lenses and a bunch of A lenses all of which are obviously full frame. I haven't even used some of them on my K-1. ---------- Post added 08-31-19 at 01:45 PM ----------

There is also the possibility of buying some used FA glass. I was looking at my lens collection after the FF news broke and I realize I'm set. FA 20 mm F/2.8; Zenitar 16mm Fisheye F/2.8; FA 20-35mm F/4.0; the 3 FA ltd's etc.
You might want to search to see if you can find some of the FA (or even A/M/K if you don't mind manual focus) glass now, while it's (relatively) cheap. I'm sure prices will go up after the FF is released.

I'm in. Hopefully I've got my depression under control, it blindsided me in mid June and I've been in unfortunate shape since then. I'll be trying to post shots at least 4-5 times a week. Yeah, I know 7X would be better but I'm trying to keep my goals reasonable.
Theme Days: Here are a few themes I'd like to see: Abstracts, Backlit but NOT silhouette, Multiple exposure, Reflections, Ruins, Geometric Patterns, Texture, Architecture, Landscapes. That's enough suggestions from me, anyone else want to chip in on either my ideas or your own?

I'm in. After a rather long hiatus I find the need for a bit of outside encouragement. Spent the winter fighting depression and haven't been out shooting in too long a time. Hopefully this will help me get over this lack of enthusiasm.

OK it seems like we have a "club" for every type/make/model or age of lens out there. I just did a search for "FA ltd club" and "FA limited club", both came up empty. We all hear much much much about how great these lenses are. I'm one of the ones singing their praises. So I'm going to put my money where my mouth is and show a shot I took last Sunday and later on post more from my 43 ltd and my 77 ltd. I invite anyone who likes these lenses to post here also! Lets show the world (or at least the people here at Pentax Forums) what these wonderful lenses can do.
I've got just one to start off. But I'd be lying to say that if I could capture this painterly effect every time I did a flower portrait I'd be a happy man. K20D FA 43mm ltd f3.2 at 1/160

A couple more. Fireflies taken in late June of this year. I found them difficult but rewarding to photograph. Their lights are both dim and ephemeral. I found that anything above 2.0 resulted in black screens. These were taken the the K 50mm F1.2 wide open focused at infinity. Shots are 1.3 and 1.6 seconds. |

Does anyone have the pin-out read for the BG4 grip? I'm having a problem with an intermittent e-dial. Sometimes the dial will only work for about 4 -5 stops ie it will go from 8 to 9 to 11 to 13 and then back to 8 again, no matter how slowly or quickly I move the dial. Sometimes I can resolve the problem by dismantling and re-attaching the grip, but sometimes that doesn't work and obviously that's a pain. I have noticed that on of the gold pins in the pin array isn't as extended as the rest of the pins, if I had a pin-out read I could see at a glance if that pin is connected to the rear e-dial. I don't want to send the grip in for repair if I can help it as intermittent problems can be very tricky. If there is anyone out the with the pin-out read I'd be grateful. Also if there are other solutions that anyone can suggest that would be helpful also. I have tried moving the dial quickly back and forth to help clean off contacts but that hasn't worked.

After a distressingly bad late summer I'm back to shooting. I've decided to migrate over here from SIC, with my (somewhat) new K-1 I'm more interested in exploring different lenses. Also, MoVember sounds like a good idea! Won't be able to shoot today, getting a new ride, (or at least signing the contract for one...new Subaru Outback to replace my ancient and elderly 2005 version).

I'm in. I originally thought to go with the DA 55*. But this talk of the A 35-105 has me thinking that way too. But I think I'll stay with my original thought. I've shot a fair amount with the latter lens in FF, and have yet to explore what 55mm means on FF. Maybe July for the A 35-105.

I'm in. Since I went with the Zenitar fisheye for April, I want something different for May. You can say that ANY lens is different from a fisheye, and that is true. Several people mentioned 50mm lenses and I have an A 50 f/1.7 that has been pretty lonely, but I think I'll go with the DFA 100mm macro. After the ultra ultra wide of a fisheye I want to use something with a bit of reach.

I failed miserably in March. As I get older I have found that I'm prone to bouts of depression. IMO there is nothing so ennervating as depression and I failed to get out once in the last 2 weeks plus of March. Now that things are a bit warmer (if not dryer) and more visually interesting outside I'll be in for April. In deference to "fisheye April" I'll be using the venerable Zenitar 16mm f/2.8 on my K-1. Hopefully I'll do better this month.

I'm in. Since I decided I needed a belated Christmas/early birthday present. I recently acquired the K-1. Since I have most of the lenses everyone else has, I decided to go with one that is relatively rare at PF, the Sigma EX DG 24mm f/1.8. It is a fun lens, but like a lot of Sigma's as big as a brick, but it should balance nicely on the K-1. It also has very good close focus capabilities. I'm going to be interested in what happens.
