Actually, it says on the box "Crystal lens for ultraviolet use" not infrared.

Cosina 55 1.2 is a M lens without aperture contacts, it will always shoot at f1.2 when you use AV. Only way to stop it down would be shoot under M mode....or remove the aperture lever so the lens act like a M42/preset.

There are interest out there using Q with D mount cinema lenses with f<1 which I find intriguing. just not @ $800. Other than pricing, can't really say much till we see some production samples, and high Yen and crappy USD really doesn't help one bit.

I've heard pentax aperture lever will hit canon's mirror, but don't know that only apply to canon FF or crop aswell, so you might want to look that up. In the worse case u need to saw off a bit of the lever to make room =P

Need some help...
I pick up a pretty nice copy of Tair-3 off local thrift store for $30 to play around with my k-x, but when I mount it on the camera with pentax M42->k adapter, the lens is about 10-20 degree off center, making tripod use very awkward (need to tilt the lens to the side to level my camera), are there anyway to fix this? My Takumar do line up correctly so pretty sure its the lens

its the lens, my 44-2 doesn't line up either but my takumar 35mm line up perfectly. not sure about infinity, mostly use the lens for closer stuff.
aperture clutch? it is a preset lens, it's pure manual...

EXIF show v1.01, update your firmware and do a fine adjust test with your lens first?

do NOT shoot @ f16-22 unless you need it for long exposure
try using f8 and try something not at infinity for test(like above have said 5.6-11 are the best)
your hood might not be long enough, try use your hand to shade the side where the sun shines
try without polarizer for now
oh and ANY auto(Av,Tv,Sv,P) mode will not stop down your lens, you have to use Manual(M) mode and meter via green bottom
ps. it would be nice if you don't rip the exif data off those test shots, it can really help us find out what went wrong

Using K-x and i've tested all my other lens, 50mm A1.7, M28mm, kit lens all focus correctly in both natural and tungsten.
the only major issue i got returning it is that I have to wait like 1-2weeks for an exchange.(BC Canada)

just got my sigma 10-20mm 4-5.6 today from B&H, did some focus test with batteries in both natural, tungsten light, find the lens back focus 8-10mm :(
Now, what should I do? this lens will mostly use for infinity and hyperfocal distance...should I still return it and try a new copy? or just live with that back focus?

I see this from a pure business perspective, it is what they need to do to avoid financial burdens, and I'm sure they've done more assessment on the problem than any of us here have.
From a personal perspective, I hated the practice as much as you, but too bad the world isn't all rainbows and unicorns... fact of the matter is that Pentax as is don't have a whole lot of option on their hands. In the corporate world, this I$ how things operates.
The only real solution is to speak with our wallet and hope we can force the process to move forward faster, sad, but that's reality.
(I am holding back that 50-135 like many others...)

Very different issue, no life is at risk, say if there's a problem with battery blowing up, now that's an issue either Pentax or Hoya can ignore.
It's like car manufacturer have a known issue with power window failure, will they fix it? Depends on their financial situation. If they have problem with steering? They have to fix it regardless of cost. In ways, pharmaceutical are even worse, they rather slap a warring label on drugs, sell it, make a new/safer one and slap a "NEW and IMPROVED!" label.
You guys are too naive to think corporations wont hide defects in their product. To them, it is a simple question of "Is it worth the money to fix it?"
Nikon and Cannon are much better as in they can easily redirect money from less essential departments such as marketing or take on loans to fix problems(they got a lot more $ to throw around), unfortunately Pentex isn't in a position to do so.

You don't get it is it? what happen when they admit SDM failure? first they'll need to extend all warranty on all current SDM lens out in the market, 2nd they need to get into R&D and provide solution ASAP, change production line for all SDM lens include new moldings to fit new motor solution, and guess where all that money gona come from? Nowhere, Hoya would not invest that much money up front.
Even if Pentax want to fix the problem right away, Hoya have the final word/$ on the issue.
Only way we will see this fix will be either Hoya's risk assessment see the benefit of resolving this issue or Pentax earn enough money for Hoya to inject more $$ into the brand.
What company wouldn't like to be problem free? but you need to set your priority when your cash supply is on short leash.

Kinda sad that Pentax really don't have the resource for multiple projects...With the company being so small and hold such a little piece of the market, any new R&D need to go through Hoya for funds, and doesn't even have the ability to take risk and get loans from banks...
You guys can complain all you want, but personally, I think Pentax is doing exactly what they need to do: expand user base, show Hoya they can make money, and get more funding for expansion/R&D. It is ugly, but reality is just that. If they admit to SDM failure, it would spell the death of Pentax faster than you think.
That said... at least they are at least doing something and put out that DC motor in the new 18-135(replacing screw drive?) Hope they are coming back around to update the SDM now...

I am so lost reading this thread.
For all intent and purpose of RAW(with neutral setting) is to accurately portray the scene so pp can be applied as needed and seen fit to the photographer. When you shoot RAW, contrast/saturation/color accuracy is the only thing that matters and it is the promise of RAW, not a more vivid image, but a more accurate image.
With my limited experience with k-x, I think it have an pretty accurate raw files with kit lens.
Ultimately you have to ask yourself: Is the sample you took properly portray the given condition of the scene? This is a question only you can answer as none of us are there when you took the samples. (regardless you like or think the image is flat or not) If the answer is yes, its an accurate portrayal, then the camera have does what it should and delivered a good RAW file .
If u want a more vivid capture in all conditions, well, use in camera setting(they are in the camera to save time from pp but with less freedom) or pp.
Now with sharpness, it is a kit lens, and I do find I need to at least stop it down 1-2 stop(5.6-8) at all zoom range to get some sharp(er) images. This ain't no L/ziess lens.

trying IR for the first time today, but some of the picture ended up with varying degrees of blue bands going through the frame, shot with M28 2.8 and A50 1.7 f 3.5-5.6 and exposure ~10-25sec in .DNG what might be the cause of this?
(the band are horizontal when camera is horizontal and vertical band when camera is vertical) some shots however, turn out perfect without bands with the same exact setting and location/subject. filter is Hoya R72 52mm |
