Pros | Many features, low-light performance, sturdy and well built for a plastic body, great dynamic range Cons | Plastic body never beats a metal body, slow LiveView AF, no AF indicator point Rating | 9 Price (U.S. Dollars) | 500 Years Owned | Six months |
I can recommend this camera: Yes Value, Features, Performance & Size
More features and better low light performance than anything in its class make this the best value out there now. It's compact enough to wear around your neck and not really notice. Would make a great backup camera for pros. Camera Review
I've always been interested in photography, but never really had the money to get into the realm of DSLRs (not to mention feeling a little overwhelmed by everything they do). I finally decided to get a Pentax K-x after much research in July. (I never even heard of Pentax until then.)
I couldn't be happier with the camera. For what I do right now, it's the perfect camera to suit my needs. I haven't been able to buy any real nice lenses, but I like the fact that when I ever do, I have a great camera to use them on.
Everything just feels good. I have never had so much fun taking pictures. Fast shooting speeds, amazing low-light performance, shallow depths of field, and built quality make it so much above all of the point and shoots I've used. My dad bought a pretty darn decent superzoom by Samsung about a week ago and I was playing around with it and I just felt like a couldn't make it do what I wanted it to and promptly went back to my K-x.
Some of my favorite aspects of the camera:
- Dynamic Range
- Being able to take a usable picture at ISO 6400. That's just crazy.
- Sturdy plastic body.
- I'm able to use old manual lenses from the 60s and 70s just fine.
- Shallow depth of field that point and shoot cameras just can't replicate.
- Nicely contrasted and saturated photos.
I've learned so much just from my six months in the world of DSLRs. I feel like I couldn't have made a better choice with the money I had than the Pentax K-x. It's not a perfect camera. The screen could be bigger and higher resolution, LiveView auto-focus could be faster, and there could be AF indicator points.
But who expected a perfect camera for five hundred dollars?

Awesome shots, Tamia. Interesting colors, and great detail in them. Lone Leaf and Porcupine Gnaws are probably my favorite ones.

Thanks so much, everyone! I can't wait for another foggy day to shoot some more, haha.
I posted in the Into the Fog thread, btw. First time seeing that thread and it's pretty incredible.

Some of these are just incredible. I love fog, it adds so much to an interesting subject. I have only got to shoot in it once (just had a foggy morning about a week ago), but I can't wait to do it some more! |

Thought this was pretty neat. Nothing special, but I never got to take pictures in the fog before and it was fun! Attachment 77138 |

Thanks for the tips. And that wasn't a picture I was trying to show off. I deleted all of the ones I took that I tried on because they weren't turning out right. I just did this to show you the problems I'm having.
I'll try some different stuff.

I just can't seem to get a good picture of my Christmas tree. And I'm fairly new to photography so it's probably just easy settings that I don't know for this kind of shot.
They end up looking like this: Attachment 76064
Looks weirdly saturated and just not pleasant at all. I have a Pentax K-x and was using a kit lens at the time on the Shutter Priority setting. Any tips on what shutter/aperture setting would work better? I don't really want to shoot it in a really brightly lit room so I just had a lamp on in the room.

Your HDR shots are fantastic! Very inspirational to me; I'd like to go out and do some shots like that soon.

I got it from instructables, although it's probably pretty much the exact same project directions. And the "red dot" is actually just wear from the plastic part of the zune. It's unfortunate that that part is not brushed aluminum like the back, but what can ya do.

There you go. Nobody said it had to be pretty :p
This was more of a test to see if I could even make one. I'm happy with the results though, so I think I will make a better one soon.

I had a cardboard box, cut out 3 sides (left-hand side, right-hand side, and top) of the box leaving about a 1.5 inch bezel around each, and covered it with white cloth from the inside using transparent carpet tape. Then I cut the dimensions of poster board that I needed to let it be taped at the top of the far end of the box and kind of glide down to the bottom of the closest side to you.
If anyone wants a picture of it, I can take one.

I spent about ten dollars on materials and built it in an hour or so. This is one of my first pictures so it's not perfect by any means, but I was happy with it! I could see myself making good use of it. Attachment 72664 |

Thank you. I didn't have many problems; it was more a matter of practicing manual controls.
Thanks, I agree that the first wasn't the greatest shot.
And also think you to Ed n Georgia, mattb123, and MRRiley. I can't really decide between the second and third as my favorite. They both convey completely different moods, so I guess both of them are. MRRiley, I agree about the highlights, but I'm getting better every day. And I'm from Parkersburg.

You're totally right man. I bought the K-x a few months ago and I'll probably get the K-5 eventually, and I couldn't be happier with my purchase. I don't foresee it being my "forever" DSLR, but I don't think I would with any DSLR, and it was only 500 dollars for a great camera that will last me a good while. You really couldn't go wrong with it.

Thank you both. Yeah, I'm really enjoying the ins and outs of manual shooting, and the m 50 f2 is a fine affordable lens.

By my model, I mean it's my fiance, hehe. We were just walking around in the woods in our backyard and I thought I'd snap a few pictures. Also, I'm very new to manual lenses. This is my first ever and I've only had it for about a week. Attachment 71997 Attachment 71999 Attachment 71998 |

It's a little shocking that 51,200 ISO on K-5 is actually almost usable and looks as good as some cameras at 6400 ISO.

I wish I could've gotten a better picture, but it was still really cool and I haven't seen one that I can think of in real life.

That's just great. Also brought a smile to my face. It's such a nice moment to have captured and to remember when he's older.

It was pretty amazing to be sure. It doesn't seem to happen that often out here, so even though it wasn't as astonishing as some peoples' pictures of skies they see, I still thought it was worth capturing.
