Hi LFLee,

Is it possible to know which version of the bag you got??? (100 or 200)

How will you qualify the back support of the bag (how stiff it's compare to a normal bag)???

Do you think that with time you will fell the camera compartment??? (will be the case if the bag is soft)

Thanks for your review.

Ben

But there are very few review out there, so anyone did try it...

How good is the back support???

In the 200 is there any place for extra lense in the camera compartment??? or i need to put it the other compartment???

Here is a quick update for the Obscura.... after a 2 weeks bike trip, the bag has become very soft (and deformed)... to the point that it's uncomfortable to ware when it’s empty (only the camera)…. And doesn’t offer any support if you carry a heavy load.

Contacted clik elite, and they were not really responsive to my complains (they offer to replace the plastic support… if it was broken… but since it’s a design issue they are simply ignoring my e-mail)

Conclusion: this product doesn’t believer what it’s intended for… and the quest for the perfect hiking solution continues.

You are right Cofra, I will be walking 6 to 8 hours a day. I'm hopping to get a little bite of charge done with the charger strap on my backpack…. And a little bites more once at the campsite.

If my k7 was the only piece of electronic that was carrying with me, i will simply bring some extra battery and it will solve the issue....

But i want to bring with me a little bite more:
Camera k7 (will need to charge my battery every week or so)
Kindle (the battery should be good enough for the trip)
ipod nano (will require to be charge every other day)
gps (eat about 1 AA every day)
Wolverine back-up drive (will probably need to charge it one during the trip)

Up to now the this (Portable Solar Battery Charger | Portable Solar Panels | Off-Grid Solar Generators | Goal Zero - Extreme Portable Power) seams to be my best option…. But I’m not really sure if I will be able to charge my K7 with it.

There is a variety of product that could charge usb device (ipod) and AA / AAA batteries.

What i was hoping for was a simple option to charge the battery of my K7.

I have a K7, and i’m going on a long expedition where i won’t have access to electricity 3 to 4 weeks. Also, there will be section of the trip where it will be very cold... with an altitude that could go get as high as 6000 meters.
I’m pretty sure that my 2 batteries will not be enough... and that I should think of a simple way of getting more energy during the trip.
So i was thinking about buying a battery grip that could accept AA battery and bring with a small AA solar charger...

Any better solutions???

Thanks for your help
Ben
Note: weight is also a concern for that trip.

So if i understand correctly the magnification come only from the fact that the 100m could take a picture from a distance 3 time shorter than the 50-135....

at 20$ it start to make good business sense to buy a warranty. (unlike some retailer that are charging 20%)

Let say that we put money aside for a second...

Will you prefer to go on a multi day hike with?
a) 18-135 WR + a prime 35mm (0.7kg)
b) DA* 16-50 + DA*50-135 (1.4kg)

To be honest, both options will pretty much cost the same since with the second option i could sell all my existing equipment.... and it also simplify my kit.

DA* reliability issue ???

At my local retailer... the 5 year extended warranty is something like 20-25% of the lens price...

Considering that the price of a repair should be less that a replacement.... in order for the warranty to make good business sense, i need to expect that there is 40-50% of the chance that the lens will break between year 1 and year 5.

Do you stile think the extended warranty is a must ?!?!?

DA* reliability issue ???

I have been doing a lot of soul searching lately...

By looking at the reviews (comparing new lenses), it seem that the DA* (16-50 and 50-135) are a relatively good value, especially considering that they are WR.

But looking at the different thread around here, it seem that the DA* have a reliability issue.

So I’m wondering if all those threads are simply because a normal amount of people have issue with their lens and they complain about it over here (after all there is no better place to do it).... or there is really a reliability issue with that series???

Has an hobbyist, the only way that I could justify such an upgrade is if I could use my equipment well pass it’s warranty coverage.

Technically, Twitch is right... but in the real life, if many people make an avoidable mistake, something need to be improve.... and i'm pretty sure that such confusion has result in lost sales for pentax.

Plans for 16-50 f2.8 WR?

Hi

Somewhere during the next 6 months, i will be looking to buy a 17-50 f2.8... as of now, i think that Sigma is having the most interesting offering ... But what could tip the scale in the favour of Pentax is if they had a WR version.

Does anyone know if Pentax has such plans???

To be honest, I’m a little bite surprise that WR is not a standard for all the fix aperture line-up... after all, I’m pretty sure that most of the buyer of those lens have WR bodies.

P 12-24 or S 10-20

With my current lens, I take about 50-60% of my pictures somewhere in the range of 17-24…

Based on the information available at http://www.slrgear.com

It looks like the S 10-20 f4-5.6 is better than the tamron 17-50 f2.8 on the portion where they overlap.

Unfortunately there is mush less reviews for the Pentax products…. So I’m wondering if Pentax if the performance are similar.

The reason is that if I go with the S 10-20… I do get an extra 2mm… but over all I will use it for only 10-20% of my shots…. But if I go the 12-24, I will probably use it for 65-75% of my shots, but only if it does a great job in the 17-24 range.

Hi everyone,

I did some research, and I could get a used Pentax 12-24 f4 for the price of roughly the price of a new sigma 10-20 f3.5

If you were in my position, which one will you go for???

Does the 2mm make a big difference???

Thanks for your help

To be honest I’m a little bite surprise that the consensus is that i should not really go wider than 17.... and that I should try to bring a long zoom with me... i was looking forward for that trip to justify buying a 10-20...

There is no way i will bring my Sigma 70-200 2.8... It’s way too heavy (1.3kg), and it attract way too much attention.... on the other end, i love the idea of getting a fast 17-50... with a cheap (and light) zoom.

Thanks

The 18-135 look interesting... but I it’s a little bit too slow for my taste (i know that the lenses with constant aperture are heavier)
I have a 17-70 that I’m using most of the time.... what I’m really thinking about is if i will have much added benefit for carrying an ultra-wide (12-24 or 10-20)... or if could “Photoshop” my way out of the extra few mm.

Hi Everyone,

I’m planning a hiking trip in the Himalaya and I’m wondering which lenses to bring with me… I will be taking a lot of landscape picture, a little bite of portraits…. And probably not much pictures where I need a big zoom…

Because of the dust and the limited time for camera setting, I will like to change the lenses as little as possible. Also the space in my backpack comes at a premium and I do not want to carry more than 1kg of lenses.

So, if you were in my situation, which lenses will you bring with you.

Note, my camera is a K7.

Thanks for your help.

The quest for the ultimate camera bag

So here is a quick review of the Obscura
The camera bay is very interesting... what you don’t see on the web site is that it is a telescopic compartment where i could fit my K-7 + 70-200 2.8.... or make the compartment smaller and get more cargo space for none camera items (when i use a smaller lens). Note that you will have to shift things around the bag if you want to change the setting of the camera compartment. Also the opening of the camera bay is a little bite small... so you may have to look at other options if you have anything much bigger that a K-7.

The internal kangourou pouch is also very interesting... you could probably fit 2 big lens and a flag... or 3 small lens.
The hydration compartment is insulated from the rest of the bag.... so very little chance of leaking on your camera

For me, the most interesting thing about this bag is that you could “sling” it to access the camera... but if you always carry you camera around your neck, you don’t really need it. If you are a pathologic lens changer, anyway you will have to put the bag on the ground, so there may be other options for you.... and if your bag is always very heavy, it’s may not be comfortable to “sling” such bag around, so you may want to look for a chest back that will attach to a traditional bag.

Also relative to my good old black diamond back pack (32L)... Click elite made the choice to use a material that is breathable... the drawback of this choice is that the bag is softer... and the shoulder strap tend to twist over if you try to sling the bag too quickly...
Hope this help
Ben
