I would like a bit more around the jaw line. I'm going to have another go and use a scrim on the bottom softbox.

Ironically enough, it's not sharpening. It's actually noise I added. Unfortunately, when I cropped it ended up looking like oversharpening. I'm probably going to go at it again from raw.

Clamshell lighting is pretty conventional.

It's not skin tone that did that, it's lighting. The bottom light was as low as it would go, both location and power. I tried to burn a bit underneath, but each layer mask attempt didn't work out as well as the original. I figured I'd just keep it mid-high key.
Thanks.

A bit too much vinette for my taste, but straighten the horizon on the second one and it's a photo that definitely captures a mood. Nice job.

Thanks for the compliments. k-9, I see what you mean about the teeth. I'll have to keep that in mind in the future. Good tip! Posting a new portrait now.

That's the unfortunate downfall of using a square softbox as a key light. I wanted a bit more spill than my beauty dish will give, and octas are still on the way.

The 24-70 is a really good lens. Just not my taste. 16-35, 35, 85 (Sigma. Nikon isn't worth the premium), 135DC, 70-200 VRI if I had to do it over.

Cooled down the white balance and pulled the purples back a little on the second one. I like this version better. |

Thanks. It's a small municipal airport right across from them. The light polluted a bit of the astro shots, but I was able to get some contrast with it, too.

Here's some shots I took a couple weeks back when visiting the in-laws in Ontario for Canada Day. I wish I'd stayed up a bit later for the astro shots, as I probably would've done a bit better. However, 1am after a 9 hour drive was about all I had in me.
Sort of a mish-mash of styles, but they were my favs. Opinions are welcome. |

Well, there are a lot of times wide angle is needed. Ceremony (especially in a large wedding), post-dinner reception, exit of church, exit of reception, larger group shots. A 70-200 (or equivalent) will be used during the ceremony to get close-ups without imposing; however, that is really the only time I can think of a need to go longer than 85 (mainly for staged shots), and most of the time I'll prefer a 16-35 range.

Search the forums. More times than not, Pentax will not cover water damage.

Explain how it's irrelevant when K-9 asked to post anything in writing that says it's sealed.

K-9, the poster right above me asked where there is anything that says that bodies or lenses are weather sealed. EDIT- Nevermind, that was you whining to show something about sealed bodies. Keep generating strawman arguments, buddy.
Also, when was the last time you used a Nikon G lens in the rain? Better yet, when was the last time you shot a Nikon? Nevermind. I'll give you an easier one. When was the last time you held a Nikon G-series pro lens?
Pentax WR lenses have a rubber gromet on towards the inner portion of the rear element. The Nikons seal wraps all the way around the mount on the lens. I have no worries going out in pouring rain, shooting wakeboarding, snowboarding, snowing, etc.

DP Review on Nikon G Lens: Discreet and Durable
The lens boasts a dedicated Silent Wave Motor for smooth and discrete autofocus operation, and is built to last with extensive use of magnesium in its construction, and weather and dust sealing, including around the mount. The AF-S NIKKOR 24mm f/1.4G ED comes complete with dedicated secure fitting hood HB-51, and soft pouch.

Oh, and Nikon lenses do have gaskets. Perhaps you just weren't looking at the right line of lenses.
