My suggestion to Pentax: make a camera with a Tamagotchi inside that if you don't go out to take pictures at least two times a day it saddens and becomes ill. I bet it will boost your sales a lot and will improve the pictures of the buyer much more than a full frame camera.

K-01 is a winner but lacks support to grow. Can there be another XS lens or two based on existing optics? And the LCD from the MX-1 wouldn't hurt, either.

+1. The K-01 is a true winner but it lacks a successor (or an update). It also lacks new XS lenses, which could be derived from existing Pentax pancake lenses.

I tried the A65 of a friend, the viewfinder is big, bright, 100% and WYSIWYG. The viewfinder of my K-r is just a joke compared to it. I also prefer it to the Canon 5D VF. Never tried a K-5 though.

The OLED viewfinder is magnificent.

Live histogram and spirit level in the viewfinder, as well as accurate exposure demonstration and focus peaking? Yes please, massive step forward I think you'll find.

Pentax full frame rumour

I'd rather have an EVF over the crappy OVFs we have nowadays.

Even the VF on high-end cameras like the K-5 is a joke compared to the VF I have in my Pentax ME (which was an entry level SLR, not to mention it's like half the size and FULL FRAME). Dammit, I would only shoot film if that was an option just to have full frame and a VF that doesn't suck.

I'd like to see the K-01's focus peaking on every Pentax DSLR and mirrorless camera from here on forwards. Its just a software thing, right, so there is practically no reason why it can't be added, right?

Since I seem to have taken it upon myself to be the community jackass who tortures photo gear to find out what kind of abuse stuff can take, I have to say...

I'm beginning to think it's not possible to break a K-5.

Most recently, I was doing a video shoot this weekend, on a day that was far windier than I would like for a video shoot. But that's the day the project I was filming was happening. Like a smart kid, I left my camera unattended on a tripod, during a lull in the wind, not thinking that off course the wind was going to kick back up and blow over my setup. Which it did. Blew it right over, and rather forcefully. Tripod was at full height, so we're talking about a pretty legit impact. The camera landed on the left side, and snapped the mic plug right off, and left the male end still plugged into the input. There are pretty hefty scratches in the battery grip, camera body, and the hood of the lens, which was actually a Tamron 28-75/2.8. The mic input is definitely looser than it used to be, but it's still in place, still allows you to plug in and out a mic, and still transmits sound to the camera. Other than that and the scratches, it's totally fine. I used it all day yesterday for another all day video shoot, on another windier than I'd like day; but I paid closer attention to my tripods...

In other escapades, I spent a whole day shooting the dirt road/mountain bike section of an adventure race from the back of a truck, until my whole camera was brown with fine dust, and there wasn't a black spot left. Then spent the whole next day shooting in rain to clean things off. The day after that, we were shooting the kayak section of the race from the back of jet skis, and my friend Sam, who also uses a K-5 got dumped by his driver and swam with his K-5 and 18-55WR for about 10 second before he got back on the jet ski. Continued shooting for the rest of the day and the camera still works.

And there have been countless other small to medium sized bumps, drops, scraps, dunks and drips in the last 18 months since I got my first K-5. I've used my two as my sole workhorse cameras since then, and have put them not only through the tests of durability, but also the test of delivering, having shot over 50 editorial print pages with them, including 15 magazine covers, as well as a few commercial and editorial video projects; and boy do they deliver. Killer results in print and on screen.

Just thought that amongst all the internet nit-picking, pixel peeping and harsh criticisms we all love dish out on our cameras, I would share some stories from the field about how much these cameras kick ass. Be proud, Pentaxians. I've seen Canon 1D's crack their housing from 18 inch drops and Nikon D3's go dead after getting lightly splashed.

Cheers!

Ben

Hi Frank,

I uploaded your video to youtube and it is unlisted so only people with the direct link could see it since there is no quick way to see it in your link without signing up. Your video looks at least as equal to the K-5 1080p videos I have seen and and much better than my K-7 HD videos and at half the bitrate of M-JPEG. I also uploaded it to Vimeo with password protection so only people with the password could view and download the native 1080p30 file for the next week. The password is "pentax".

Hi All,

I have to say I'm really a very lousy w/ video stuff, never really liked taking videos. But here I'd like to share one anyway. It's taken in full HD at 30fps, aperture priority, no editing or whatsoever. Make sure you download and look at the original one (hope the download link works better than MSN SkyDrive) instead of watching the video clips on 4shared:

IMGP0652.MOV - 4shared.com - online file sharing and storage - download

I'll try to take some more over the coming weekend.

New K-01 mirrorless camera coming

If the K-01 is a smallish, rangerfinder-inspired mirrorless body with three nice pancake primes, it will be well received.

If it is APS-C and priced at 50%-60% of the Fuji X1-Pro, then Pentax may have a genuine hit on their hands.

If it is full-frame and priced at 80%-100% of the Fuji X1-Pro, then PentaxForums is about to get a whole lot of new members.

I'm predicting a cube-shaped camera with a flip-twist screen on the top like a modern waist-level VF.

it seems the 40mmxs is just such a creature since it's even smaller than a da 40 and rubber covered and not compatible with the slrs (at least according to rumour:D), it would allow a 15 mm that is a pancake with DA 15 performance. or a truly fast 70 (like 1.4) no bigger than the da 70

It's already been implemented in the Contax AX? And that was before digital.

You'd have to set a focus range first -- like using the 1.7x telecoverter. 5cm should be enough to focus most lenses with ease I'd think.

Why would it need to be any more precise than the current focus system?

I could certain see how it would less than ideal for some types of lenses -- but a new system would come with its own optimized lenses.

You don't think a sensor assembly would weight a whole lot less than hunks of glass?

Pentax Full Frame - An official statement from Pentax (they listened!)

Last month, the owner of Pentaxeros.com (Spanish Pentax community/store) and I joined forces and wrote a letter to Pentax presenting a case for why Pentax needs to work on developing a full-frame DSLR.

The list of reasons what quite elaborate (here's a brief summary):
In any case, Pentax listened! Not only did we get a written response from the president of Pentax Europe, but he assured us that management in Japan (as well as the R&D department in Europe) will be forwarded our feedback, and that (following acquisition by Ricoh) the company plans on expanding its Advanced Amateur and Professional product lines. Once I get permission to post the letter, I will attach in in this thread!

Update: here is the response from Pentax

Some Thoughts Pentax and Full Frame

The problem with that reasoning is that it doesn't allow for any personal preference, really.

A well-composed, in focus shot taken with the $75 M 50 f/1.4 hanging on a wall could be mistaken for the same shot taken with the 43ltd (yes, it could and has, trust me :) ) If someone told you it came from the 43, you'd have no real reason to doubt them. However if you yourself shot with both the 43 and the M 50 1.4 for a couple days, week, or months, you'd probably start to prefer the 43, maybe by a great margin. In fact the actual differences would be subtle, but they'd start to mean a lot to you.

It's the same way with FF - talking a shot out of context and not allowing a choice between similar images to see which is preferred doesn't really prove much about the relative worth of the two formats.

P&S's, bridge cameras with varying small sensors, even phone cameras - all are represented in galleries now. You'd be hard pressed to 'know' a shot was taken with say a G12 vs a DSLR in many cases. That fact doesn't make the sensor size difference irrelevant, just not always relevant.

1.3 stops more DOF control at equivalent FOV and aperture, at least a stop better noise peformance (comparing 2008 FF wth 2011 aps-c) is what the sensor size difference brings in this case. Everyone needs to figure out for themselves how much those advantages would matter to their personal enjoyment of the hobby (or make their profession easier.)

For me, it's kind of a big deal to be able to shoot a $110 50 f/1.8 and have it 'look' like a 35 f/1.2 would on aps-c, or have a $300 20mm f/2.8 'look' like a 13mm f/1.8 would (if one existed,) or a 180 f/2.8 look like a 120mm f/1.8 (below)... etc. It's fun, useful, and when you add in that extra stop of ISO and the performance of the body, it's a rewarding format to shoot.

And I just can't get over my idea that Pentax could do it even better than Nikon in many ways. I'm convinced they could, with Ricoh's eventual blessing.

Pathetic. There are many instances of smaller companies biting the heels of larger ones. They are usually far faster to respond to consumer demand and often have their fingers on the pulse more so then big ones. You tend to get better value for money as well. You've already said Pentax IQ is superb and better then your Canon, then you go onto to say you cant recommend them? Thats a real contradiction.

Look at the car market, companies such as Kia and Hyundai have foreced people like GM (whats left of it) and Ford to increase the reliabilty and offer greater warrenties on thier cars and keep costs down. For a few years now Hyundai have offered a 7 year warrenty, yet GM (vauxhall/Opel) have only just started offering 3 years ones.

30 years ago Kodak and Minolta were the Kings. Where are they now? Kodak in dire straights financially, Minolta now Sony (2% to 12% market share in 3 years and they were an underdog too) and yet Canon were teeny by comparison.

Despite being part of Hoya and perhaps a bit cash starved, they came out with the superb K5, Kr and award winning 645D, do you really think they have just been sitting there doing nothing for the last 6 months? If they had, there would be little or no reason for Ricoh to buy them other than purely for the name - and we know that isnt the case.

12 months ago Canon and Nikon were saying they had no intention of joining in the csc market, "people wanted faster feature rich cameras not smaller". Judging by the way Nikon have now entered it as well, I would say the corporate giant got it wrong. I can remember when Bill Gates stood up and said the internet would never really take off, Google were not a threat, but that MSN was going to dominate the world and that was really what people wanted....

Incidently, Ricoh has (as of March 11) 109,000 employees (4 times more then Nikon, but a little less then Canon), owns 234 diffent compaines (consolidated) and turnover is larger then Nikon. It is also older then Canon and same age as Fuji (1934). So it's not exactly small fry.

And before you accuse me of being a fanboy, I shoot Fuji.

Woody
