Tamron Telephoto SP AF 90mm f/2.8 Di Macro on its way

Thanks for all the replies.

@Pacerr Better meaning just it seemed the 70mm pictures came out better then say the 150mm pictures. Of course this could be attributed to my technique, hand shake etc. However in reviewing the pictures the consistently better (in focus, no blur, etc) were in the 70mm range.

@normhead Thanks that is what I kind of wanted to hear. I mean with memory cards the way they are I have time to practice and get 1 or two good shots out of every ten or 15. That is until I improve overall.

@hcc So far just night games however the filed is lit fairly well. I will be moving onto day games as the weeks go by so (of course depending on weather) light will be better. Im using a K-x. Im more or less right on the sidelines so it is not really that far away so im good with that.

@Harm and Jin Im fairly close but tend to try and stay away from players running toward or near me. Deathly afraid of injuring my camera... :D I will need to read up and understand the focus limiter.

Sad thing is I was unable to make the game last night because of the late delivery of the lens. So it will have to wait until next week. Just cause here is a link to the last game I took pictures of. There is some Post processing to make them sharper etc.

The team was happy but I still see room for improvement.

I just purchased this lens and its on its way. A week or so ago I took some pictures at night on a lit field for a coworkers soccer game. I was using my K-x and a Tamron 70-200mm 2.8 and I was fairly 'happy' with the results. I do need to work a little on technique and remember to turn off the shake compensator when mounted to a monopod.

In reviewing my pictures I noticed the better ones appear to be at the 70mm area. Is it a decent assumption that the Tamron Telephoto SP AF 90mm would also be a good choice of use for the soccer games? It is lighter so would be a lot easier on me and Im at the boundary lines so im not that far away and have free roam around the perimeter.

Thanks for your time.

For Fathers day Iwanted to go to the DC Zoo. However walking around etc and the heat they were calling for seemed unappealing.

So I chose Virginia Safari Park instead. If you are ever near or around Lexington Va try to make an effort to stop there. Fun for all ages....

Anyho...

Here are some pictures from my trip to include a link to the rest of them. Feel free to visit and comment.

Thanks for looking.

Teleconverters question

Ok I lied... :D

"I did the "one step" PP in PSP X3. Considering the bird was all the way in the top of the tree and I was a good 40 yards from the tree I think it came out pretty good.

I used a monopod and manual focus. A task I am slowly learning."

I still used:
Lens: 55-300 DA L w/Vivitar 2xMC4 Camera: K-x Photo Location: JULIE J. METZ WETLANDS BANK ISO: 200 Shutter Speed: 1/350s Aperture: F5.8

And here is the picture:

The TeleConverter is AUTOFocus however as was mentioned depending on the target, light, distance(?) etc it is better to go manual on SOME shots.

At least that is the way I understand it.

I have the Vivitar 2X and had it attached to my K-x with the 300 mm and took this picture... that I cant find....

Well anyho it worked rather well taking a picture of an Osprey young perched high atop a tree. I was free handing it also with no support.

Thanks for the well wishes. However being paranoid as I am all I need is camel spit in the body of my camera... ;)

That and it appears to be very dusty/hairy so I would feel uneasy in swapping the lens while we are driving through, rolling down, up the window, AC on blowing air and particles around etc....

Or is that being overly cautious thinking?

So the best bet since it is Fathers day weekend is to have the wife and son shuttle me through a few times.... :D

Oh the great thing about this is the animals are not enclosed.... :D (well some are however in the walk around area I have more leeway to swap lenses if need be)

My wife will be driving as the animals roam freely.

I was thinking at first of the 300 but I am inside the car (darker) and didnt know what type of effect it would have trying to take a picture of an animal 6 feet away or so.

It will be during the day and the weather report is calling for partly sunny chance of T-Storms.

I will be going to Virginia Safari Park tomorrow and while there is a walk around area I will be mainly shooting from inside my car.

I plan to be there all day as you can go through as many times within the time frame they are opened for one entry fee per person.

I have the following lenses in my bag that I will/can take.

18-55 Pentax Kit
55-300 Pentax Kit
70-210 Pentax SMC 4-5.6
70-200 Tamron 2.8

I am guessing for inside the car I will be good with the 70-210 or 70-200. We have a Ford Escape and the backseat is fairly wide so I can get a good 5ft from window to window.

That will also afford me the chance to be able to zoom if need be.

However being able to go through multiple times also affords me the chance to go through with one lens then follow up with another (18-55?) a second trip etc.

I guess over all what I want to know is will the 2 70's suffice without having to swap even though I could and if so which one would be better (2.8?)?

Or am I totaly off base here?

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Police say a man was carrying a dead weasel

Sorry but I havent laughed this much in awhile. It was a welcome and tohught I would share...

HOQUIAM, Wash. (AP) - Police say a man was carrying a dead weasel when he burst into an apartment and assaulted a man in Washington state.

The victim asked, "Why are you carrying a weasel?" Police said the attacker answered, "It's not a weasel, it's a marten," then punched him in the nose and fled.

The attacker was apparently looking for his girlfriend and had gone to her former boyfriend's apartment Monday where the victim was a guest.
KXRO reports he left the carcass behind.

Police later found the 33-year-old Hoquiam man arguing with his girlfriend at another location and arrested him after a fight.
He said he had found the marten dead near Hoquiam, but police don't know why he carried it with him.

A marten is a member of the weasel family.

question about file sizes and resizing on the K-x

Thanks for the additional tips.

@jatrax
Just a personal/shareable site of pictures I take (PLUG! Pentaxpics | Home) of course I want to learn and improve so PP will probably become an option. I use PSP X3.

I was always under the impression a 5mb file was more useful with regards to looks and manipulation then a smaller file. Im of a mind I would rather have to much than not enough however if I really dont need it all why waste the space. (make sense?)

Dont take this the wrong way as it has happened to me.....

Check the timer settings. Sometimes (maybe the way I hold it or some such) I have accidently put it on a delay and it has really confused the heck out of me.

I will kick myself change the settings and be on my way only to have it happen again (a few months down the road) and forget taking 5 mins to try and figure it out.....

Dont know I felt they were to restrictive so to speak.

Also Ive always had my own site (under another domain name) and when I swiched hosting companies had a chance to register another domain and have the same price for both with regards to hosting etc so it just flet like the thing to do.

Have a photo site and a personal site.

Hiking Monopod

Paint me paranoid.... :D I just couldnt afford (both monetary and from my wife!) something to happen if I knew I could have avoided it with those regards.

My hiking is regulated to well walked wooded paths with little variations unless I go out of my way. I have however misclicked in fastening a leg on a tripod and on a monopod once. While nothing happened adversely to the lamp or gear it has always made me second think using the monopod as a support device in excess of my camera.

Expierence wins out over paranoia though. So what I say is just my opnion based on paranoia....;)

My view on a hiking stick is you dont want something with any threat of collapsing.

A walking stick you have a little wiggle room as you only will be using for basic balancing.

Hiking is more intensive and the stick will take more stress then walking.

I would look for a one piece device if you will find yourself hiking more then walking.

Of course it depends I guess more on the terrain you will be visiting then the wording of hike.

A solid piece of wood (think German/European) finished etc with a modified (DIY) top may suffice.

I just wouldnt feel safe using a segmented staff to support myself and backpack on a terrain intensive hike.

question about file sizes and resizing on the K-x

So I usually (99%) of the time shoot at the best jpeg setting creating files 5mb in size.

I have to resize these to get under 2mb for file uploading to my site.

Would it be better to stay shooting using this method and batch resize via my editor or go to RAW and basically do the same thing? I usually do not do any other Post Processing at this time.

I think RAW would take an extra conversion (to JPEG) but it can be all automated so its not that big an issue.

At an estimate of 98 pics per every 2 gis on RAW I would have to swap cards more frequently.

Thanks.

If you have friends see if they are doing something and offer to take some pictures for them. Then have them tell two friends and so on and so on.

Make sure you can do what you say you can do within reason. Put it in the agreement that if you cant you dont get compensated for it or get compensated for what you can do.

Just be honest and up front with what they can expect. Soon you (should?) will be comfortable with what you shoudl put in an advert. An advert is (IMO) just a starting point to the whole package.

Hope this helps.

I concur. I could almost see if Facebook (are they?) is providing incentive in supporting the contest. You know like provinding prizes etc.

Yet they are not. Maybe they are in a round about way (the more likes/friends PF gets the more revenue via FB they get?) yet I dont know how that stuff works.

I dont like the fact that it is a requirement (even though I have a FB account and use it weekly) I also dont like the fact that people that have been doing this for years and that may be professionals in photography are permitted to compete with people that may not know the difference between and fStop and a ISO setting. I didnt like black eye peas when I was young..... but I HAD to eat those.

With that I can attempt to compete or I can opt not to. The contest is not a requirement in any way shape or form. It is something PF is doing with maybe a little help from FB.

Hopefully we wont lose anyone from the community over this.

@BigDave
Mostly just for show. I mean if someone contacted me about wanting to purchase a picture I wouldnt turn them away but its nothing im going for at this time.

Yes to the search. Case in point if you place Bluebird in the search field the labeled (just one) Bluebird pic comes back. I need to of course tag the photos. I will see if it searches comments and or IDs of people that post.

@Colbyt
In answer to your question.... I dont know thats how the template came... :D

I should read up on RSS as I'm not that versed in what it does or is supposed to do.
