You're right. It's really not mean enough for my expectations, and for that I am thankful.

I still don't know how I gave that impression... my very first post says "new to the biz" Im sorry you if I gave you a different impression somehow.

I understand no one is entitled to help in general... but isnt this one of the reasons we have forums? I would think it'd be rather boring to hang out in a room where everyone knows everything.

I'm just going to take the advise of a previous and very wise poster and ignore the things that are riling me up. Im pregnant and hormonal and shouldn't be asking for help right now if I don't know which avenue I want to go down. Prime or zoom... prime or zoom..

Im sorry... WHEN did i say Im a pro? I am not. I am a whole lot closer to a beginner. Beginner who just BARELY started a business. Charging hardly anything whlie i learn. I started (photography, not the biz) with barely ANY knowledge, but a clear "eye" for it.
Been building from there.

What is so wrong with this??????

Are there any zooms that come even close to the things I love in a prime?

That may be the dumbest question Ive had to date, so Ira, just walk away.
:p

I wouldnt have taken it as an attack if the first question wasn't basically calling me an idiot.

If that question weren't there, I would have happily posted a few examples

This is exactly why I avoid forums.

If you're going to be mean, just don't respond on my post at all.

The only question I had in that post was which zoom would people suggest? What exactly makes me an idiot by asking that?

Usually my newborns don't complain too much about me being all up in there business. ;)

The more and more I think of it, a better quality zoom would be most beneficial I think for shooting anything other than newborns. It's hard to choke that statement out due to the pure enjoyment I get from primes.

My kit lens just doesn't produce the quality I seek. My studio is tiny, but I'd be using this zoom both indoor and out.
What zoom would you folks suggest?

I'm sorry I wasn't specific enough for you, this is my first post ever to this forum. I usually just lurk because there are always a few forum people that scare me, regardless of what the forum is about.

Right NOW I shoot 50% newborns, 20% families, 20% maternity, and 10% weddings. (I JUST started venturing into that) 80% of my business right now is done in the studio.

Hmm... 31mm is awfully close but I do a ton of newborns, so maybe that's why it sparked my interest. A lot of my work is done so close that you hardly see the background at all.

I find the range with my kit lens (18-55mm) works ok when I do small family shots which happens much more often than large group shots, it's the poor image quality that drives me nuts. Maybe thats the route I want to go down...

BUT I only have the one prime, and I sure do love her. The 77mm or an 85mm interests me too...

Yet I have no wide angle lens...

BAH! I don't know!!!

I like your train of thought... I was thinking a good zoom or a prime...

Any other suggestions folks?

The title pretty much says it all! I'm a portrait photographer who is fairly new to the biz but expanding... I do studio and outdoor shots with occasional weddings.

Most immediately is the want for a new lens!

Here is what I have:
standard 18-55 kit lens
50mm 1.4
DA 55-300mm 5.8
Tamron 90mm 2.8 Macro

I was toying with the idea of buying a new prime... or possibly a fisheye (but that would be more to play with I assume)... but really open to anything that will help me with my growing business as well as my love of the hobby. ;)
My concerns are sharpness, speed, low light capabilities would be nice...

Thanks!
