Semi handheld shot on a bridge in Venice (camera leans on rail, aimed at stormcloud, tilted up manually)
Post processed only to increase contrast and clarity, and color balance to comnpensate (over) exposure of surrounding clouds... Did I over do the editing?

Hi Eccs,

Personally I would choose a CPL- it adds something to your pics you cannot add in pp. (or at least, I haven't found out yet :) ND filters are relatively easy to simulate in LR, although you may need to bracket and HDR... Just my thoughts...

What agreat (if not _very_ humbling) thread. So pleased with my still new K5- here's a few shots I had never dreamed of making with my K10 :)

D-Range Setting

Last month I got my K5 (Yay christmas, and dream girlfriend!!) and I share the confusion... I've spent quite some time searching info on this issue, but am left with some confusion:

1) Shadow correction can be done PP- assumin one shoots RAW (?)
2) Highlight correction is a nifty feature that can save lots of PP, or maybe even not possible PP (?)
3) There is a trade-off: ISO 80, or highlight correction.

I only shoot RAW, and wonder if my conclusions 1 and 2 are correct. More importantly (for me, at least) is to know which considerations long time K5 users have re point 3... Is the benefit of highlight correction worth losing the extra ISO range? Would it be worth making a user mode for this? Can anyone point me to an article that elaborates on this issue?

Thanks a lot!!!

RonHendriks1966 has information of one order of a really cheap K-5 that was cancelled- (in this thread), casting doubt on the reliability of those cheap offers. Can anyone confirm actual delivery for that price? It seems cheaper than ever the K10D or the K7 have been??

It seems they've taken it offline again. They weren't the only one offering (check Tweakers ) but it does raise some questions re shade of grey of these vendors...

For those in Europe- Since last night I see a growing number of shops selling new K-5 for around €540-550 (~$725)
I am a bit hesitant- it seems too good to be true, but some of those stores aren't unknown. They do claim that the camera is German, manuals in German, software offers other languages (including English)

K10D metering issues

We had some daylight- it must be spring!
So- when center weighted metering with the DA lens, the camera measures about 1-2 stop higher than my meter- not enough toe be picky about. With the M 35 it still overexposes quite badly, but I noticed the blades snap back faster if you flip 'em open and closed for a few times. So, when I meter (green button) a couple of times at least I get predictable results. I guess this chapter is now closed, and I'll just have to remember to pack the light meter if I use the M35.
Thanks all for your ideas!

Well, two weeks later and I have received my serviced DA* 16-60 back. Paid €90 (~$119) for "Refixer block frontal, remise en etat de la commande diaphragme" Whatever that is.
Seems better now, but haven't had a single day with real light... :( Now I can go figure out if it is camera or lens related...

One more reason to stick with Pentax.
With my prize-lens - the DA*16-50 in service and uncertain of its recovery I seriously considered switching brands. Because of availability of lenses, speed of autofocus and general service availability. Since Pentax is no longer cheap for lenses (bought a NEW FA 50 1.4 for $190, now they go for $450: 20817 Pentax SMCP-FA 50mm f/1.4 Standard Auto Focus Lens #20817 )
Then I pictured myself with a Canon 7D. And I couldn't....
Still, the one of the main reasons to buy into Pentax was their relatively low price levels and the unprecedented backward compatibility of lenses. They're no longer cheap, and good luck finding old glass....

Still, I'll be buying a K5 this year :)

Interesting article- but what? The k-5 outperforms the 7d? faster and better? What happened?

[edit] or is this an insight in poor auto focus lens performance? [/edit]

just a hopeful story: Years ago my K10D fell off a table, on stone pavement. Other than a smashed UV filter, no issues. Hope you're that lucky too...

That is good to know, and would explain some inconsistencies I could not reproduce... Did anyone come up with a fix? That would have been a problem regardless of camera type used, right?

Yeah, done that, same result. Always M mode, obviously ev+- doesn't work there... (and on a bright sunny day at least 3 stops over exposed. Complete white burn out.)

Not too wild about the kit lens for contrast and resolution, but it does the trick for focusing and measuring :)

That's what I bought recently- fortunately they go for about €5-10 at the local flee market :)

OK, today it's heavily overcast, so nowhere near the contrast and tricky conditions I had yesterday. Measuring seems to work better now, but when compared to my meter and me, it still overexposes by 1/2 to 1 stop. That's just measuring, not actually snapping the shot. I am starting to think this is a camera/lens issue- since the 18-55 didn't give me any issues.

Interesting link, thanks! I almost thrashed my K10 over this (and focus impossibilities), but it seems there may be hope.. Well, as soon as there's daylight I'll compare my camera with the light meter and see..

Hi Paul,

Thanks. the blades are quite snappy though, and results are consistent. I doubt it is a lens problem.

Hi Steve,

Thanks! To my shame and embarrassment I have to admit I haven't done that yet. Kinda weird when I think of it. Will go out tomorrow and compare the two, and post back. (Couldn't really be the body though- or it wouldn't work with the 18-55...)

Hi ash,

Wow, what a quick reply! Sorry, I forgot to mention- yes, green button metering. One of the key advantages of the Pentax in my book :) (unfortunately it isn't that simple)
Thanks for your response though!

K10D metering issues

Hi All,

for a long time I was convinced the meter of my old K10D was seriously ill- over-exposure with more than 2-3 f-stops was no exception, I had a -2 dialled in permanently and still had to dial down after that.. This was with my DA* 16-50 and SMC M 35 mm. So bad actually, that I bought a proper meter and use that when things get tricky. Then, this weekend, I tried an old 18-50 kit zoom. And hey presto- near perfect metering! Even with difficult subjects (lots of reflecting bits on a sunny day)

The 16-50 had aperture issues, but the 35 is in pristine condition.
What gives? Can anyone enlighten me?

Thanks!

Thanks Adam. I was hoping for a DIY solution- service centers being few and far between.
I just dropped it off here in Brussels, and hope it is fixable.

Hi All,
My now 3 yrs old DA* 16-50 has an aperture issue- the blades do not snap back easily, leading to all sorts of problems using this lens.

any advice?
