Pentax K-5 IIs: $699 at B&H

Hey Adam, you mentioned the K-5II/K-5IIs are discontinued, but I was at Pentax Corporate US here in Denver the other day and they told me they plan to keep the K-5IIs in the lineup for awhile. I got the deal for $699 thinking they were blowing out the final stock too, but it sounds like these will be around for awhile longer. So there should be more good deals to come in the future! Still, $796.95 is a good price at more than $200 off.

*PETITION* Lets put an end to the crazy online Pentax lens prices in the US!

I'm in. Pentax is not protecting any brick and mortars when it comes to me. I've been buying from B&H for something like 15 years now. I am now making my living from photography and there are many premium Pentax lenses I eventually want in my collection, but if am in need of a lens on short notice, I will buy Sigma or Tamron before I pay the artificially high prices. I'd buy used here on the PF as well.

Normally I shoot a photo specifically for this contest, but I've been too busy. So here's a shot of Cadel Evans when he rode the USA Pro Cycling Challenge in Colorado last Aug just weeks after he won the Tour de France.

Red Rocks Seating Patterns

Here is my "patterns" submission. I was looking for natural patterns to shoot, but remembered the patterns at Red Rocks from the seating that was renovated a few years ago. Fortunately, this is only 10 min from my house. This is an HDR image from 5 exposures separated by 2 stops each.

Lens for real estate photography

Yes, you have to manually edit the EXIF data before sending it to LR if you want to apply the lens correction profile, which isn't as easy as I thought it would be. The data is there in the EXIF file, so I extract the focal length data, then copy it where LR looks for it. I've been working on a process that I will share soon. I haven't shot 8 mm in awhile, so I need to revisit my process and make sure I have it working properly.

Yeah, I suspected that I just got a lens with bad autofocus. I suppose I should send it in under warranty. It doesn't work well on my K-5 or K-7. I just use it a lot and don't want to be without it for long.

I have both the Tamron 10-24 and Sigma 8-16 that I use for real estate. I have to say I really like the Tamron, except that I have to turn off the auto-focus because mine essentially worthless. Manual focusing isn't a big deal to me though. The distortion isn't as bad as the 10-17 shown above. Lightroom has a profile to correct the distortion as a RAW file, so that isn't a big deal either. I like that the Sigma gets down to 8 mm, and the auto focus actually works most of the time, but when used on a Pentax, anything shot between 8 and 10 mm is not recorded in the correct place in the EXIF data to be able to apply the lens correction profile in Lightroom. It requires extra steps to correct the distortion. They each have their advantages and disadvantages, but considering the cost and extra effort involved with going below 10mm, I like the Tamron.

I shot this photo for this contest up near Mount Evans, west of Denver, CO. It's not a contest winner, but I still find it interesting. I am submitting relatively early for me since I've missed a few contests because I waited too long. I figure I can update later if I get a better shot.

Normally I submit a photo taken during the month of the contest, but even though I took some shots this month of parks, I am digging into my archive for this one of the Grand Canyon NP taken during a rainy 3 day backpacking trip in the canyon.

Adam, I don't understand. I submitted the photo on 3/31 MDT. My computer shows you even replied on 3/31. Once I submitted, I went to bed and did not see your reply until just now. I did not see anything about submitting by East Coast time or anything like that. I thought I was within the rules. Please let me know what I did wrong.

Thanks Adam.

Spring comes late in CO, so we had to be creative. We were trying to be serious, but silliness prevailed.

Took this New Year's day with the intent of finding "orange." I like to try to shoot a photo after I find out the theme rather than submit an archive photo from my collection. I'll submit this one now, but I will keep looking for "orange" throughout January and submit a new photo if I find something better.

Adam,
Would you mind fixing my title from Dispair to Despair before submitting? That would be great. If I need to resubmit, just let me know.
Thanks!

This was a hard one. I spent a lot of time on this theme and only applied a mild antique filter on this photo. I miss "water." :p

Hello fellow Pentaxians,

I've been using this forum to research lenses and finally decided to join, especially since I found out I could help support the forum through my online purchase. There is a lot of great knowledge from all over the world here.

I've been shooting Pentax since I first picked up an SLR camera. I learned on my fathers Asahi Spotmatic, and have purchased my own PZ-1, *ist D, and now the K-7. I still own all three. I research everything thoroughly before I buy, and Pentax has always offered great cameras at their price points. I've always been very pleased with their features and performance.

I'm an engineer and live in Colorado. As a photography enthusiast, I look forward to learning much more through this forum.

Cheers,
Christopher
