For Sale - Sold: SMC Pentax-A 400mm F5.6 - PRICE DROP

I have this lens, its a great lens and still works well with AF cameras, even if its only manual focus. The FA 400mm is rather rare and goes for three times this price and truth be be told when your in the $1500 to $2000 range, there are better options in the AF line.

I have never seen a FA 400mm go for less than around $1300.

This is a great long lens for someone who just wants to play with a longer lens. Deals like this on a great older lens like this is why I love Pentax. Someone should scoop this up.

Which Lens Case for SMC-A KA* 200mm f4 Macro?

Thanks, I have wanted one for a long time.

I was always waiting for a better deal, or maybe an fa version coming around that I couldn’t refuse, but suddenly I got a bonus from work and just went for it. There has been a bunch on eBay from Japan, but most don’t have the tripod adapter. Now I know why, it’s because they won’t work with modern Pentax bodies with them.

Since it’s not aN AF lens anyway, I may look into getting a Kenko KA extension tube set if I can find them. As long as the aperture info gets to the camera, I don’t care about the AF version anyway.

Which Lens Case for SMC-A KA* 200mm f4 Macro?

Thanks, there seems to be a few of those around.

I noticed that you can't rotate the lens to portrait mode when using the attached tripod collar with my pentax k3-II. Which seems to be a known problem with some of these older tripod mounts and modern camera bodies.

Any good work arounds?

Hi....

I just got a used KA 200mm f4 Macro from Japan. It felt like i was taking a chance, but the lens is in beautiful condition.

I was wondering if anyone can recommend a lens case for it?

The guide on here says the hard case for it is HF-185B, but my chances of finding that are probably slim. Are there any pentax soft cases that would work with it?

Is it bad to store lenses and equipment in a pelican case long term?

Just to clarify, I have been a Pentax user for a long time, over the years I have some really nice lenses. Not mint, not collectibles, just lenses I enjoy using every once in a while. But I am also only a hobbiest, I don't do photography for a living.

I hate to say it but many of my SMC-A Primes havn't been use in years, but I would like to store them well enough that they are safe from rolling off a shelf or freak water damage. Then if I want to ever grab that old smc-m 85mm f2 its ready to go. I have an attic and a basement, but a dry linen closet seems to be the most stable environment in my house, its heated in the winter, and I have AC in the summer.

All kidding aside storing them in a pelican style case that doesn't have a top attached might be perfect, if I could attach the lid to transport them if i ever need to.

I may just do a pelican case with the moisture packs in it and those padded dividers.

Thanks for the replies, I guess in a perfect world I’d get a pelican style case with a removable top. Store the lenses with the top open and the lenses padded, but have a top I could put on it if it had to transport them.

It sounds like I am back to a Tupperware container :-)

I have a lot of older Pentax lenses. Many of them only get occasional use. I don't want to store them in a lens case anymore.

I was thinking of grabbing a pelican case and using a padded divider, but now i read thats its not a great idea either.

i'd like to put them in a small linen closet in my house, so the pelican cases would have worked well, but now I am back to square one .

Tupperware containers would be OK, but they seem like the lenses would just be too loose and be thrown together in something like that.

I was looking for something more organized, some of these lens are worth a lot now.

Ideas on organizing and storing flashes and lenses?

Thanks for all the replies....

I would say I'm in a similar boat, I don't print that often. I hate wasting money on ink that just sits there and dries up.

I may have to go the B&W Laser route, but hate the idea of going back 20 years and not being able to print color.

Does anyone have any suggestions on a good airprint capable printer that's reasonable as far as ink costs?

I am running mac osx, and usually update to the newest version, so need something that doesn't let their drivers expire.

There are plenty of printers our there, but the thing is I already have an epson scanner, and have no need for a printer/copier/scanner combination.

I occasionally print photos, so probably need an ink jet, but just need a stand alone printer.

I have a k3ii, so the 35mm macro would be closer to the 50mm in a FF. It should be enough to start playing with it.

Any suggestions on lighting?

I am guessing LED's have changed things...

After years of looking I finally came across a real old Pentax Copy Stand IIIp. Its the one that fits into a little case for travel purposes.

PENTAX Copy Stand III and IIIP reviews - Pentax Camera Accessory Review Database

I am not sure exactly what I am going to do with it, but was thinking of maybe using it to copy some old pictures and magazines that would get damaged in the scanner.

I was just wondering what lens would work best with this?

Its getting shipped to me now, so I don't have it yet, but just trying to get some info on it so I can play with it when it arrives.

Any suggestions on what exposure mode; ie spot or matrix?

Same thing with the AF, spot or matrix?

Thanks for the tip regarding the background.

I'm on the east coast, what is "golden hour difficulty/blessing"?

---------- Post added 05-24-19 at 06:53 PM ----------

Thanks for the tips, I will have to play with using fill flash in a less bright setting, it makes sense to not have them staring a bright sun.

Thats when I don't have as much faith in my skills.

So my nephew asked if I could grab some shots of his group before his prom for him.

I have done some sports photography with mu K3-II, but doing portraits is kind of new, and I don't want to mess up the settings.

Any suggestions on shooting some basic portraits photos, they will be outside, around 5:30pm. I told him to find a spot where the sun will be behind my back, because I am not that confident in using fill flash.

My camera is the K3II, for lenses I have a FA 71mm f1.8, FA 43mm f1.8, and a FA 24mm f2. I have a few zooms and longer telephotos that I don't think would be great for this use. I also have a AF360GZII and a portable grey card I have tried using few times, but its hasn't seemed to work out.

I know the photography basics from the film days, but all the settings on k3-II do trip me up more than I'd like to admit.

Any hints on setting up the iso and camera settings and maybe using the flash would be appreciated.

Some hard to find lens hoods popper up.....

We are dealing with old NIB stuff. The prices on those lenses are collectors prices, good copies of both those lenses to actually use can be had for cheaper, but not NIB condition.

I looked almost 2-3 years for an FA* 80-200mm f2.8 hood. I had my eye on one on ebay from Austria, but as much as I wanted it, $175 wasn't worth it.

Now $70 from South Korea felt like a steal. Anyone that is missing a FA*80-200mm tripod adapter or a 300F* f4.5 hood is hitting the jackpot.

The rest of the stuff doesn't seem all that thrilling.

Who ever scored the FA 200mm macro hood definitely hit the jackpot, but it that was my FA 200mm macro lens I would never take it outside to loose the lens in the first place :-)

Wish Pentax would make a new version of the 200mm macro that was replaceable and wouldn't seem as much like a collectors item.

I'm not sure if this will help anyone out, but a few years ago I lost the lens hood for my Pentax FA* 80-200 f2.8. I was able to alter another Pentax hood, but it was never the same and I have been looking for a genuine replacement hood to pop up for a long time. Right around christmas a south korean seller on ebay put one up for sale. They also have/had some pentax F* 300mm f4.5 items.

The stuff is NIB and not the cheapest, but might be the holly grail to someone looking for a 300mm f4.5 lens hood. They might have even had a case and tripod collar. I was nervous about buying a $70 item from South Korea, but I got it in around 2 weeks.

Here is a link....

Maybe it will help a few collectors out there.

Wanted - Acquired: 400mm prime lens

I have an old SMC-M 400mm f5.6 I'd be willing to part with for a good price if you wanted something to play with until you find an FA version.

The SMC-M 400mm is an old lens; its it doesn't provide auto exposure, but it was beautifully made. The focus action is silky smooth and its in great shape. No mold, just a bit of dust inside because its a pretty old lens at this point.. I have the original case which is in tough shape, but you would be best to ditch that if you were interested.

The FA 400mm is kind of a rare lens on the used market. Most of the used FA 400's I have seen are up there and Im not sure there isn't better AF long range options if your spending that kind of money. I use a SMC-F* 300mm f4.5 with the AF 1.4 TC, for the cost of a hand holdable FA 400mm, I dream of finding deal on a 600mm one day. Its a better long range lens than the 400mm is. The F* 300mm has the tripod collar that lets you use the TC better.

In any case a used smc-m or smc-a 400mm might be an option to consider. I have to find a good home for my smc-m 400mm one day, it was the first decent long lens I owned and need to find it another home at some point.

Good luck in your search, shoot me a PM if your interested in the smc-m 400mm.

I have been looking for the pentax 67 67mm T132 Closeup lens for about year w/o much luck. The idea is to use it with my F* 300mm f f4.5 as it has a tripod collar.

Anyone have any suggestions for a achromatic close up filter, I have a feeling I am better off just getting good third party lens at this point, if anyone has any suggestions...

K3II settings for outdoor stadium lighting

Thanks for the advice, just ordered a white/grey card off amazon, hopefully I have it for Friday night. I ll try to go through some of that in the backyard with the flood light on.

One more question....

You mentioned 1/350 being good enough for football players being parallel to me, do the shutter speed have to be faster if they are coming towards you?

I wouldn't have thought it matter, moving being moving?

Truth is, Im not in a great position to get many game shots of my nephew playing, I am mostly shooting my niece in the color guard and this week they have the families walk on the field as they call their names out. My sister was looking for a few photos of that.

Can you walk me through how to do that?

Im just an amateur at this stuff, who happens to have a few nice lenses. Also would I have to do that from the field?

I am not officially doing this for the school; just my nieces and nephews, I won't be able to get on the field under the lights.

---------- Post added 10-15-18 at 12:23 PM ----------

I was just doing the old 1 / focal length rule for hand held shots, because I had a 200mm lens. I could bump it up to 1/500.

I am using my K3II with a FA 200mm f2.8 lens at night taking pictures of the football team and marching band under outdoor stadium lights.

I set the aperture wide open and the shutter for 1/250 and let the camera decide the iso speed. Not sure what mode I had the metering set on.

I got a lot more light that I expected to, but the pictures seem off a little. The lighting seems weird.

Are there any built in camera settings to adjust for the outdoor stadium lighting?

Opinions on FA 200mm f2.8 with Canon 77mm 500D Close Up adapter for Macro work?

I just got a FA 200mm f2.8 that I have been liking a lot more than my FA80-200 f2.8. The major flaw with the FA 200mm was the lack of tripod mount, and I some what fixed that with Manfrotto telephoto lens holder.

It seems like the setup might make for a good poor mans FA 200mm f4 macro if I get a 77mm Close up adapter. I read somewhere that Canon's 77mm 500D adapter was pretty good.

Any opinions on this?

Would a 200mm with a closeup adapter get me closer than a 100mm macro?

What do I give up by using a close up lens?

I had been looking for a Pentax 67mm T132 Closeup adapter to work with my F 300mm f4.5 for a year now and haven't came across a single one, but know I can grab a Canon 77mm 500d closeup lens.
