From memory, that’s how the original Canon EOS5 (film) did it.
When enabled, the focus point selection was started by raising the camera to the eye.
You would select your focus point by looking at it ;),then focus on that point by half pressing the shutter or by pressing the af lock button.

Could be used to initiate EYE CONTROLLED FOCUS POINT SELECTION as per the Canon Eos5. (Original film version)
It was cool on that camera with only 5 points.
How cool would it be for dozens of points!

Pentax UK service centre (Johnson’s photopia now defunct) told me that if I paid for the repairs, 3years out of warranty, the motor would be replaced with a new type that doesn’t suffer from the same problem.
I would assume recent production would be using this new version.
Decided to try the DIY fix before shelling out the cash.
Seems to be working well.

If you need to use debug Mode on other than a K-3, search the forum for debug and your camera model.
The numbered file with the debug command is specific to different models

I've used the disassemble, free the SDM motor method and found it works quite well.
if i need to repeat the process i'll take on board the idea of drilling the mount and the second retaining plate, to create permanent access to the SDM.
this will not compromise the weather seal as the hole will be inside the gasket on the lens mount.
hopefully it will be a while before this is needed.

Taking a cue from the LX brought out for the 60th anniversary, this model should be named C for the 100th

1- create two files in the root directory of a SD card,
first one named 00077760.502
(this is specific to the K-3. other models have different number codes for the name of this file!)
and
second named DEVELOP.MOD
2-Edit 00077760.502 in a text editor to add the line [OPEN_DEBUG_MENU]
3-Insert this card into slot 1. do not close the card slot door. switch on the camera.
4-the development menu will appear.
5-set DEBUG MODE TO EN (Enabled) and hit OK.
6-Turn off the camera and remove the SD card........put in your normal sd card and close the door
7-Turn on the camera. open the menu.... a hidden menu called Test mode now exists between the C and the Wrench menus.
8-enter the test mode menu & scroll down to AF Test. open this menu.
9-Leave AF Area test and AF Area Number Well Alone!
10-scroll down to Focus Corr. dial in a value + or - (the units here do not correspond to the units in the normal Focus adjust menu.
a correction here of +60um changed the required adjust on my lens from a value of more than +10 to only +7)
the correction added here will be added to all the corrections set in the normal way!
11-press ok to accept the change. this will kick you out of the menus.
12-if you return to the menu you will find that the value dialled in previously now appears above the slider (this means it has been stored) and the Focus Corr value shows as 0
13-return to the test mode menu and scroll to the bottom to disable the Debug mode- as you do not want to accidentally change any settings in there.
See picture sequence below.
This procedure has worked for me but proceed at your own risk. there are setting accessible via this method that if set incorrectly could turn your camera into an expensive brick.

I previously used pktether to enable debug menus when I had the K-5.
unfortunately PK tether does not support the K-3
In this case it was necessary to enter debug via a boot file stored on the root of a SD card
FromTjompen1968
Pentaxian
The K-3 Debug Mode
This is how you enter:
Create 2 files in the root of SD card (Make sure your computer shows the file endings, i.e .txt, .PEF, . JPG etc)
00077760.502
DEVELOP.MOD
Open and add the text [OPEN_DEBUG_MENU] to the first file.
Insert the SD card in slot 1 and turn on the camera without closing the card door.
Enable Debug Mode and press OK. You can now remove the files.
In the Menus, before the C1-menu, you now will find a hidden menu
I'll post a photo sequence shortly

this adjustment can be done in software via the debug menu.
My DA*16 - 50 f2.8 needed more than +10 points of focus adjustment on my k-3.
Via the debug menus I added +60um of af adjust then re tested the lens.
It now focuses spot on with only +7 points.
All my other lenses then Needed re-calibration and had shifted by roughly the same amount, in the same direction

Could this adjustment be better done in software via the debug menu?

PC cables are notoriously temperamental.
Calumet used to sell a little tool for squeezing the PC conector to ensure good contact.
The other option is to always carry multiple spare cables
