It does this on another Pentax of mine. If you jiggle the lens a bit, you can get it to show f/2.8. It must be something with the contact. Others have reported a similar problem. I would be willing to consider a reasonable offer if you're interested.

---------- Post added 09-05-2011 at 10:53 AM ----------

Given the issues with the aperture, I would entertain a reasonable offer.

PentaxForums.com Marketplace Listing

Item for Sale
Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 DC Macro

Asking Price
$225 OBO

Item Location
Boston, MA (United States)

Item Description
Used Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro:

This lens is in great condition and is a fantastic everyday walk-around. The lens has a minor defect where the aperture will only stop down to f/3.5. I sent it back to Sigma and then said the lens was fine, but when it is mounted on my K100D, it does not go below f/3.5. The lens works fine otherwise and I haven't noticed or minded the lack of f/2.8.

The macro feature (1:2) just makes this lens all the better. This lens has a locking feature to prevent the barrel from extending while walking.

Given the condition issue, I'd entertain a reasonable offer.

Smcp- da 18-250 tc

Hi,

Will the SMCP-DA 18-250mm lens handle a 1.5X TC? I'm going to Yellowstone and I will be hiking quite a bit. I don't want to be hauling too much equipment and I want to have my K100D equipped with this lens for shooting a wide variety of subjects. However, I think I will need some extra reach at times and would need a TC for wildlife.

Thanks!

Multiplication Factors with Teleconverter

So if I have a K100D with a 1.5x multiplication factor, add a 1.4x teleconverter on, and then put a 300mm lens onto the camera, what will my focal length be? Is it 1.5x1.4x300=630?

Thanks!

Telephoto, teleconverter, or both?

I probably won't blow any of these up past 8x12. I am also likely to upgrade to the K20D, so I will have a lot better IQ compared to my current K100D.

Are there any decent 300mm primes that would work on the K20D with a TC?

Telephoto, teleconverter, or both?

So I have about $750 to spend on upgrading my telephoto equipment. Right now I am shooting with a K100D and have a Tamron 70-300mm. Its acceptable, but for wildlife it doesn't give me a lot to work with.

I have thought of a few options:

1. Get the Sigma 120-400mm f/4.5-5.6 DG. That would be about 600mm of reach on my K100D. However it is only 150mm more than what I have now.

2. Get the Pentax DA 55-300mm and slap on a 1.4 or 2.0x teleconverter. That would give me about 750-900mm of reach. The only downside is that I would lose some image quality.

3. Beg my wife to let me get the Sigma and a teleconverter.

Any thoughts?

thanks!

Help Me Spend Some Money

I talked to my wife and she said that she was fine with shooting film for the rest of her days (she's old school).

So, I would have enough money to buy a nice teleconverter and telephoto lens. Any suggestions on what telephoto and teleconverter I should buy with about $500 to spend?

Thanks!

Help Me Spend Some Money

I am fortunate to have gotten an extra job TAing this semester so I will have ~$1300 to spend on camera gear at the end of the semester. I would like to upgrade my current set up and pass it on to my wife. In addition, we are taking a trip to Yellowstone and the Tetons this coming July. I mostly shoot landscapes, but would like to do some wildlife, so some extra reach will be needed.

She is currently shooting with film and doesn't like putzing around with changing lenses. I have the following set up:

Body: K100D
Lenses: Sigma 17-70mm
Sigma 10-20mm
Tamron 70-300

She has a Pentax ZX-L with a Sigma 24-135mm

I was thinking about the following upgrades:

1.

Get K20D Body
Keep Sigma 17-70mm lens for K20D
Buy all around lens for K100D and pass on to my wife
Buy a teleconverter for Tamron and K20D

2.

Get K20D body with 16-45mm DA lens
Pass on K100D and Sigma lens to wife
Get teleconverter

3.

Keep current set up and buy Bigma lens.

I'm open to some other suggestions if you have them. I like option 1 the best. My only questions are: what teleconverter should I get and what is a good all around lens in the range of $200-300?

Option 2 isn't really attractive since I love my Sigma 17-70.

Option 3 is the least appealing since I really don't see myself using the Bigma enough to warrant spending ~$1K on it. I would certainly rent it if I could find a place that carries it, but I have been unable to.

Thanks in advance!

Auto Focus: Canon vs. Pentax

I am a lifelong Pentax user. I don't think I have ever held a Canon or Nikon DSLR in my hands, until Sunday. I was at Target and picked up the intro level DSLR from Canon. While I didn't think much of the camera, the autofocus was great. I would describe it as Zippy! It was quick and silent. It made my K100D look like a tortoise.

Has the K20D improved its autofocus? I have been finding myself in some situations where having better AF would certainly benefit me. It almost made me think about bailing out on the SS Pentax. Then I remembered that I own over $1500 of Pentax gear.

Smoke Pictures

I'm trying to shoot some pictures of smoke. The pictures are at the link below. I think they are okay, but certainly not good. I was wondering what suggestions you all have for me to improve them. I am using a pretty crude set up as follows:

Camera: K100 D in RAW mode at 6MP with shake and noise reduction on. ISO 200. Contrast, sharpness, and saturation all set to +1. WB set to flash.

Tripod: Yes

Backdrop: Black t-shirt

Smoke source: incense held by burner. Smoke plume is approximately 4 inches from lens. Smoke source is approximately 12-14 inches from black backdrop.

Setting: Dark room.

Flash: Manually discharging a flash (TTL) that is approximately 24 inches perpendicular to the smoke source. The flash has a snood made of paper around it to direct the light at the smoke.

I am opening the shutter in bulb mode and then triggering the flash manually.

I have noticed that all the pics have a white haze on them when I download them to my computer. I use the "I'm feeling lucky" function on Picasa and it seems to take care of the haze, but then my backdrop shows up as brown and I seem to get a lot of noise. I'm cranking up the shadows on each pic to get rid of the brown background without losing the smoke.

I am thinking about getting a slave flash that I can trigger with my onboard flash. I was also thinking about using some black muslin as a backdrop rather than a t-shirt.

I welcome any criticism or suggestions to improve these.

Thanks in advance!

Joe

Sigma 17-70mm Apeture Issue
Posted By runjmb

I'm having some problems with my Sigma 17-70mm lens. I have had the lens on my K100D for the last 6 months and it worked fine up until about one or two weeks ago. It used to stop open to f/2.8 just fine and now it will only open up to f/3.5. If I giggle it or keep scrolling on the wheel it will go to f/2.8 but then it goes back to f/3.5.

I haven't dropped the lens or camera and their doesn't appear to be any goo at the lens-body junction.

Has anyone had similar problems? Is there anything I should try?

Thanks!

I've seen the pics of him washing clouds out to be whiter and making skies blacker. He spent just as much time post processing as he did pre processing.

Thanks for the advice. I'll keep playing with the white balance. Its good to know that SSC settings don't do anything in the RAW mode.

Thanks!

I have been using my K100D for about 2 months now and have shot ~1000 photos. I love all the features and have really been taking more photos now that I converted to digital. I am using a Sigma 17-70 lens on the camera which has been performing superbly.

My only complaint (and I think I'm being picky) is that I get an orange tint to my photos. It is worse when I don't manually do the white balance prior to shooting. Picasa usually takes care of it. Sometimes I want the oranger tones (especially if thats what things really looked like). However, sometimes the difference is quite substantial. My current settings are high saturation, S+1, S+1, C+1. I shoot raw at 6MP.

I know that post-processing is just going to be a way of life when I shoot digital, but I feel bad when I have to manipulate my photos after taking them (what would Ansel say?). I have rationalized it by saying its akin to the development process, but it takes less time. ;)

Thanks!

Joe

I took some photos while on vacation along the Blue Ridge Parkway this weekend. I only wish that I had a graduated ND filter because of the high contrast scenes that my camera couldn't always handle it. I used a K100d with a sigma 17-70mm. The macro feature on the lens is great. I can take some great pictures with the macro.

Please feel free to provide comments or criticisms.

Thanks!
