Flash - how to know if it works in pTTL/auto with my K10d?

The only thing I don't understand is, considering that the flash isn't communicating with the camera due to the absence of pTTL, then why is the autozoom function and flash range working, when I change camera settings?

Flash - how to know if it works in pTTL/auto with my K10d?

The classical "it's" and "its" mistake... I know the difference, but every now and then I make the mistake. I'm not a native english speaker, but still there's no forgiveness! :-)

As to the flash, I'm sadly reaching the conclusion that it isn't pTTL, and that it's always firing at full power.

Is there any other kind of test I should do, or option to select in my k10d, that might circumvent this, and make it work in auto or "partial auto" mode?

Considering it will only work in manual, and considering I'll mainly use it in bounce mode, for an indoor event (with only a few shots outdoors), do you think it's possible to achieve good results? I've been doing some testing at home, and with full or 1/2 power in bounce mode, camera in manual with f4.0 and shutter 1/180, I'm getting proper exposures.

I have tested the flash a bit more and I get the following:

- When using 2 second timer delay - I don't get the pTTL pre-flash, so I guess this isn't pTTL

- When using Av mode - keeping the ISO constant - the more I close the aperture, the darker the image gets --> the flash should be firing with the same power every time

- When using Manual mode - keeping the ISO constant - keeping the aperture constant - changing the shutter speed - I always get the SAME exposure --> the flash is adjusting it's output power according to the shutter speed?

Flash - how to know if it works in pTTL/auto with my K10d?

Hi.

I have just bought a second hand Centon FG105D flash, which is the same as the Promaster FTD7000M and the Quantaray PZ-1 DSZ.

I bought it mainly to be used as a slave flash, but I also wanted to use it in auto mode in my Pentax K10d. The specifications state that it's only TTL (not pTTL) compatible, but I read two threads in other forums where some persons said it worked in pTTL with the k10d.

The flash has various modes - TTL, manual, multiple (for multriple flash exposures) and slave. It seems it doesn't have a auto/thyristor mode.

I tried it in Green, P, Av, Sv and Manual modes, and the flash didn't seem to be working in pTTL mode in any of them, except for the Green mode (which says the flash is working in A/auto mode), where the flash didn't yeld over-exposed images like in the other modes. Unfortunately, the Green mode is extremely limited, and I wanted to use it with the largest aperture and a shutter speed of 1/125 or 1/180 (it's for portrait/event work).

What's strange is that the flash seems to be communicating with the camera, because it automatically adjust the flash zoom when I change the zoom in the lens, and it also changes the estimated flash range in the flash lcd.

When I use it in manual, Av or Sv, if I keep all variables constant and change the ISO, images will be more overexposed as I increase the ISO, which means, I guess, that it's not working in pTTL mode.

I have very little experience with flashes, so how can I know if this flash will work in pTTL or auto mode?

I'm looking forward for your replies.

Best regards

Pentax pop-up flash - range and suitability for portraits?
Posted By José Ramos

Hello there.

So far I always considered that pop-up flash was meant to NEVER be used, unless we wanted extremely harsh light and bad portraits.

The thing is that I'll have someone shooting with my backup K10d in a wedding, and I won't be able to get a spare flash for it.

As such, I have been reading about pop-up flash diffusers. What do you think of these? Will they create a much more diffuse and pleasant light, making them perfectly usable?

Thanks

P-TTL flash - Camera in Manual mode - ISO shouldn't change exposure right?

Hello there.

I'm have a Pentax K10d and a Sigma EF-530 DG ST

I'm new to this flash thing. I was experimenting with it, and I don't understand one thing: either in manual or in aperture priority mode, with the flash in TTL mode, changing the ISO will change the exposure of the image. Considering that the flash is in TTL mode, and that the manual camera settings haven't changed, wasn't the flash supposed to compensate for the ISO difference, so that the final image/exposure output would be the same?

Using a manual flash for wedding portrait - too difficult?

Hello there.

I have two K10d bodies, and a Sigma AF 530 DG ST flash.

I shoot amateur portrait photography (besides more serious nature/landscape photography)

I have a wedding assignment (can't call it a professional assignment, it's my sister's wedding and there will be some amateur photographers covering it - her choice), and I will have my girlfriend using my 2nd K10d body.

I have long been looking for a manual flash with slave mode, to shoot better studio portraits, and I found the Yongnuo YN460-II flash, which is cheap and has a full manual slave mode.

Myy question is: can the Yongnuo manual flash be easily used on the other K10d for the wedding shooting, or is it too complicated to use a manual flash for this kind of photography? What does it involve using a manual flash?

Pardon my ignorance on this subject... I've searched for this kind of info on the web, but couldn't find any clear explanation.

Landscape Earth Day - Celebrate - My photographic hommage

I didn't use HDR. I used a 3 stop ND Grad filter on the field, and then converted the RAW with Adobe Camera Raw, adjusting fill light, blacks, clarity, vibrance, highlights, exposure, noise reductions and sharpness. Then I used some dodge & burn on the rocks, along with final resizing and sharpening, in Photoshop.

Cheers

I found it funny that you are publicitizing a petition for Pentax to allow to turn off long exposure noise reduction... I bought a K20d two months ago and immediatly sold it because it didn't have that feature.

Soul Searching

Walk those steps, and don't be afraid, after all it's just your soul.

The image and its story:

I made this image about three weeks ago. I guess it's one of those rare photos I submit shortly after making it, as I still have tons of images to go through.

This was quite an interesting day. The weather in Portugal has been extremely stormy, and this was one of those days. As usual, while driving I tried to find the best spot to shoot, considering the sun orientation and some sky areas which seemed to be starting to let the sun pass through the clouds.

God is an extremely unpredictable and temperamental illumination assistant, and when I reached this place the wind was incredibly strong and rain was falling intermittently. Would there be light or not? Oh yes there was, and what a light! It was one of those special moments...

To reach this pier you have to descend about 50 meters, through man-made steps. There's a parking lot near it and it seemed that nobody risked in going down there. Even though you can feel a serene feeling in this image, due to the long-exposure, waves were clashing into the pier with incredibly fury, and the scene was quite apocalyptic.

Obviously, I immediatly felt those waves screaming for me, and telling me "come come... you will risk loosing your gear and you will freeze, but perhaps I'll let you leave with some good images...". :-)

This is the first photo of that afternoon. It was taken halfway, still on the steps.

That white substance/foam you can see in the bottom half of the image is sea foam, projected by the very strong winds.

I used a 3 stop ND soft filter for the sky and a 9 stop ND filter to be able to use a longer exposure.

f/11
15 second exposure

RAW conversion with adobe camera raw, and slight adjustments in post-processing on color balance, dodge and burn and final sharpening

Thanks a lot for your feedback so far.

I thought about creating some main galleries, but in the end it wouldn't make sense. The site is easily browsed, and adding an extra layer of categories wouldn't help it. Each one of my works is an individual piece with an added concept about it, and I wouldn't like to arrange them in simple categories like "waterscapes", "landscapes", etc.

I'm looking forward for other pentaxian's opinions! ;)

Hi there.

After dozens of hours of work I've finally finished my new website! My previous site was in Gallery 2 format, and a few weeks ago I've decided to abandon it, because of the difficulty with cart integration and the very technical customization.

My photos were mainly shot with a Pentax K10d, except for a few oldies made with a Konica Minolta A2.

Your feedback is much appreciated!

K20d - doubts about live view and long shutter noise reduction...

I actually did... :-)

If the K20d had the option of turning off the long shutter noise reduction I would keep it because of the 4 extra megapixel and the aided advantages of quicker focusing and high iso noise, but the noise reduction thing is a dealbreaker to me... :(

K20d - doubts about live view and long shutter noise reduction...

My problem is not using live view in sunny conditions, as I usually shoot during the "golden hour", on dawn or sunset. The problem is not being able to view a usable image on the live view, when everything's almost black on the viewfinder, mostly when I'm using a 10 stop ND filter.

Yes, the K20d focuses quicker, might have better high ISO performance and allows for AF individual adjustment for each lens, but considering I would only need this 5-10% of the time, I don't think it will make it worthwhile to keep the K20d. Besides that, it's not like the K10d is totally unusable outside landscapes...

Well... I already have a Pentax K10d, with the same great viewfinder. Considering that 90% of the photography I make is landscape photography, with lots long exposures using ND filters, does it make any sense to stick with the K20d. I have 4 extra megapixels, but apart from that there isn't a single advantage, and a HUGE drawback with the noise reduction feature... What do you think?
