Wide Angle Prime - DA or K/M/A?

Interesting - I didn't really consider that the lens could affect color fidelity, but I guess between different coatings, lens configurations and materials... I'm really not that impressed with autofocus as a feature yet, I can get focus better manually (especially now that Katz Eye fixed the view screen and the MF calibration) but having aperture controlled by the camera is handy. Maybe I'll find ways to benefit from MF once I learn its tendencies.

Wide Angle Prime - DA or K/M/A?

I'm just getting into DSLR (having bought a K-x a couple of weeks ago) and was wondering, if I wanted a better quality wide angle prime lens than the kit 18-55 DAL, which would be a better choice, something like the DA 21mm F3.2, or one of the old pre-AF primes like say the M 20mm F4? From purely an image quality perspective. Things like AF and auto-aperture are of secondary importance for me (nice to have but not enough reason to drive the choice). Also film body compatibility isn't a big concern either (I have a couple of 28mm lenses that I can still use with my film body if I want to).

From looking at resources like the lens review database and various online markets that the cost for either an AF or a classic pre-AF in this focal length range is close enough that there isn't a clear winner based on price. But yet they are costly enough that I would want to get the best one based on image quality.

Brief info about K-5 and KR

I just bought a K-x about 2 weeks ago. Decided it was time to get into DSLRs, and am planning a vacation trip next month, so didn't have time to wait for the new models. I want Pentax to release a FF some time in the near term primarily for doing wide angle (landscape) work and also just on principle to have a product which is a direct replacement for a film SLR body (without crop factors). Other than not being FF and having the maddening and unusable focus screen (which can be replaced by something like the Katz screen - would that sticking a FF sensor in there was as easy), I like the K-x a lot so far. Like the idea of what appears to be a more robust body construction in the K7, but it seems to me in general that DLRs are still evolving and improving rapidly (mostly with regard to the sensors and various image processing functions), so for my first DSLR purchase I decided to be a little cheap :) and I can reevaluate if I need something better later on. Hopefully in next few years there will be a Pentax FF available.

Am not very interested in giving Canon or Nikon a pile of money for their FF cameras. Like the results I've gotten with Pentax over the years, like the lenses I have and just wish they would bring out a FF model.

PentaxPoke, thanks for the information. I just bought a K-x this weekend (longtime K-1000 user) and have found the stock viewfinder experience maddening. I simply cannot rely on the viewfinder to focus and don't like the idea of having to rely on the AF sensor - am too used to having the viewfinder visually indicate focus. So glad there is a way out!

Focusing Screen "Pentax K-x" removal

Very glad to find this thread! I'm a longtime K-1000 user, and I bought my first DSLR (Pentax K-x) this last Friday. So far I've been very disappointed with the focusing experience using the viewfinder, finding it unreliable and uncomfortable. Wasn't clear from reading reviews that the K7 would have been any better at indicating focus clearly. I have to rely on the focus indicator/beep to get the best results, and coming from the K-1000 that is a very disconcerting thing to do. Sounds like a Katz screen is in my near future.

Vivitar 28mm/2.8 CF (K02) vs. Tamron 28mm/2.5 (02B)

I have a Vivitar 28mm 2.8 lens which I've had for many years, used on my K-1000. This weekend I bought a Pentax K-x body. All of my other K mount lenses (some Pentax, some not) fit on the K-x, except this lens. It seems to hang on something as I twist to lock (so I don't force it!). It does still fit fine on the K-1000. Nothing to my uneducated eye looks wrong in looking at the bayonet end of the lens. It's not a big issue as with the crop factor I wasn't planning on using it on the K-x anyway, just seems odd. Has anyone else had a similar problem?

Pentax & dealers

Right now I'm not even getting the chance to put my greasy fingerprints all over a floor model, so it's kind of moot :( I'll support the local camera stores but they do have to offer a more or less competitive price.

Pentax & dealers

I've tried 3-4 "dealers" from pentax's website dealer locator (which isn't very good BTW - just show me a list of statewide dealers, rather than the 1-2 you think are near my zip) and every one of them, once I call the dealer, no longer carries Pentax camera bodies. Most seem to have stopped within the last year. Many will say something like "we still have a few lenses...but no cameras".

I'd like to actually hold and try the k-x and k7 before making a purchase decision, but I'm not having much luck finding a dealer. I'm in the Philadelphia area, not exactly the boondocks - certainly a major metro area.

Is this part of a nationwide trend, or is it just the Philly camera stores?
