Condensation inside lens - 18-50mm WR

I have to say, I was quite surprised by these replies. I figured that if condensation inside is caused by there being moisture inside the lens, and if WR is supposed to keep moisture out of the lens, WR looks relevant.

Also, people seem to suggest that WR (and the limitations of WR in keeping water out) were relevant in this case: https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/6-pentax-dslr-discussion/96738-pentax-k-7...densation.html

Also, as well as my K-S2, I also had my Q7 with me - at the same time, in the same conditions. The Q7 doesn't have a WR lens, yet it did not have condensation inside the lens.

Anyway, despite being discouraged by the comments above, I thought it was worth taking it back to the shop to see what they would say.

Given the comments above, I was expecting the worst. But I didn't even have to argue. Straight away, they wanted to know which lens I had got with the camera - was it WR. And as soon as I said it was, they just said, you shouldn't have moisture inside with a WR lens, so you shouldn't be getting condensation, so we'll send it back under the warranty.

Of course, I haven't heard what Pentax will say when they get the lens, but it is promising.

So for anyone who comes to this forum because they have a similar problem, I would suggest that it is worth taking the lens back to the shop to see if they will repair it under warranty.

Condensation inside lens - 18-50mm WR

Recently, I took my camera (K-S2) out, with the 18-50 WR lens. It was pretty cold - snowing.

In these conditions, I had a problem - a small circle of condensation in the centre of the lens. On the inside. Presumably this means that there is water on the inside.

If it was a different lens, I might think it might have been my fault for not keeping the lens dry. But this lens is WR.

I know WR isn't waterproof, but it hasn't been submerged, or anything like that. Just the usual rain and snow. (And not torrential rain as far as I remember.)

Anyway, my question is, am I right in thinking that I shouldn't have this problem, and that I should be able to take it back to the shop for a refund. It should still be under warranty I think.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Thanks everyone. I don't use film very much, so buying my own scanner wouldn't be worthwhile, I don't think.

I'll have a look at some of the ones suggested here.

Hi,

Can anyone in the UK recommend where I can get colour film processed and scanned to CD to give decent size files (e.g. to allow printing at large size)

How to Shoot Film Digitally

Olympus Trip 35

The pages above talk about shooting 35mm film and getting them scanned and being able to compete with a good DSLR.

But where I have got my photos scanned (a couple of places - one a Kodak shop) the files are small, and soon loose resolution - nowhere near the files I get from a DSLR. Simply become pixelated much much earlier.

I assume they just need to be scanned with a better scanner/higher resolution.

Can anyone recommend where I can get this done - at an affordable price.

I don't use film very often, but I have a couple of photos I thought I might get printed on canvas but it just isn't possible with the current file size.

Any recommendations appreciated.

Thanks

Rob

Pentax K-S2 compatibility with lenses

The Pentax K-S2 should work with the Pentax-M 85mm. Here is a photo on flickr with this camera/lens combination.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/igor_di_k/17254115971/in/photolist-shFRy8-rkVW...-wncfw6-wEbjiX

Regardless of the details about how to get the best from an M lens, if you have the camera set to manual focus, it should take a photo whether it is in focus or not etc.

Severalsnakes, are you sure the whirring is the shake reduction? My K5 is silent when I half press the shutter (if using manual focus).

---------- Post added 11th Sep 2015 at 02:07 AM ----------

CORRECTION:

Sorry - Sevveralsnakes was right, and I was wrong (about the compatability).

This is the key point:
First, if your camera won't fire, set "Allow aperture setting other than A" to 2 (allowed) in the custom function menu.

I guess I changed this in the menu on my camera so long ago that I forgot I had, and forgot you had to. That should solve the problem.

Still not sure about the whirring though.

---------- Post added 11th Sep 2015 at 02:35 AM ----------

Britta, have you tried turning the shake reduction off? If that is the noise, then presumably if you turn it off, it shouldn't make a noise. If it does still whir, presumably it is something else.

Anyone else have a K-S2?

Best camera for manual lenses - focus peaking

Despite originally saying I'd stick with the K5ii, I saw a Fuji X-M1 at a very good price, and couldn't resist.

Now that I have had a chance to use the X-M1 for a couple of weeks, I have now decided to buy a K-S2, and to sell the X-M1 and the k5ii.

Basically, I really like the movable screen - especially for use on a tripod. And the focus peaking was sometimes useful. But I missed having the option of trap focus, with manual lenses. And of course I couldn't use my DA lenses on it. And I missed image stabilisation. And I realised that, when not using it on a tripod, I missed the grip of the K5ii.

But then the K5ii didn't have the movable screen.

Also, having looked at a K-S2 in the shop there were some pleasant surprises. The liveview is better (it doesn't keep turning itself off after viewing an image, so it feels more like using a mirrorless.) Also, it allows bracketing with a remote (which previous entry level Pentax cameras haven't allowed.)

So basically, I decided that the main lesson to take from the X-M1 was that I really like a flip up screen.

Now I just hope I can sell my K5ii, the X-M1, and maybe a lens or two, and get enough to cover what I just paid for the K-S2.

(I will miss the quiet shutter of the K5ii though).

Unfortunately, upgrading to lightroom 6 wasn't as easy as I had hoped. Turns out that my computer was not capable of running lightroom 6.

However, I had been thinking it might be about time to upgrade my computer anyway. (I think mine was about 8 years old.) So I now have a new computer, and lightroom 6. And the ability to fix fringing is now so much better.

It seems that lightroom 6 now recognises the 50mm for photos that I add, now, but still won't recognise previous photos taken with it. (E.g. if doing a search for all photos taken with that lens.) Still, it is good that it is recognising the lens in any new photos.

Thanks. I can now select the lens in lens correction, but it still isn't showing in metadata (even after I have selected the lens in lens correction).

But maybe it will recognise it now if I add new photos. I'll try that, maybe tomorrow.

For those who have the DA 50mm 1.8, and lightroom, is it recognised on lightroom?

Until recently, I had lightroom 3, and whenever I used the DA 50mm it just showed up as an unknown lens. So I assumed it was because I had an old version of lightroom - perhaps released before the DA 50mm.

However, I have just upgraded to lightroom 6, but it is still showing up as an unknown lens. Does anyone else have this problem?

(Other information if captured - such as the aperture used etc.)

HI,

I recently received the Pentax adapter for K mount lenses.

It seems very well made, but one thing surprised me. Except when in the L position, the aperture ring moves smoothly, rather than clicking into place with each stop (or half stop).

Does anyone else have one? If so, can you confirm that this is how it is supposed to be, or have I got a faulty one?

Thanks

Changing focus screen on K5ii

Thanks everyone for your comments - one more question.

A number of people have suggested that the hardest thing is replacing the shims. However, it seems that the people who have had the hardest time with this, having to use trial and error to get the right result.

However, I have noticed a few posts that suggest it may be easier with the "fosucingscreens" products:

I didn't need to adjust the shims.

That is surprising since my Canon screen is about 0.2mm thicker. The thickness of the shim will make no difference to what the AF and sensor sees, only to what you see through the viewfinder.

Focusingscreen.com includes plastic shims with their screens. They are quite flexible and difficult to use and inferior to the genuine (metal) Pentax shims

Read more at: https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/6-pentax-dslr-discussion/301663-changing-...#ixzz3it9ouDln

A thing to remember is that there are two clips/frames. The outer one holds the screen itself and a not so obvious inner one holds the spacer shim. Since the EeS screen is of a different thickness to the Pentax stock one you'll also have to replace the original metal Pentax shim hidden under the second frame with the supplied plastic one.

Read more at: https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/6-pentax-dslr-discussion/301663-changing-...#ixzz3it9yx1bE

Taking these comments together, I am assuming that there shouldn't be trial and error involved. Rather, the plastic shims provided should be the right size, to match the camera with the new screen.

As such, the problem is the fiddliness of the plastic shims, but not the size of them. As such, as long as I can get them in, there shouldn't be any trial and error. It should just be correctly set up for focusing.

Does that sound right?

Thanks

Changing focus screen on K5ii

As a result of this discussion - https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/10-pentax-slr-lens-discussion/301380-best...peaking-2.html - I am now considering the option of getting a different focusing screen for my Pentax K5ii.

And, having done a little research, I am tempted by an S type screen,

However, comments like this make me think it might be more complicated than anything I would like to do:

"With now an accurate DoF, seeing what is actually in focus at f/1.4 became really easy! But there was a severe back-focus, so I had to remove the metal shim and replace it by two thin strips of post-it..."

Read more at: https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/115-pentax-k-5/142241-best-screen-ever-ma...#ixzz3ijTEgVBh

If I buy one of the screens from here Focusing Screen can I reasonably expect to just put it in and not have any problems, or is it likely to be more complicated than that.

I kind of assumed that if it does go wrong, I can just put the old one back in. Is that right, or is there any risk of causing lasting problems?

Is it worth getting a professional repairer to do it instead?

Any thoughts and/or advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Best camera for manual lenses - focus peaking

Interesting thought. The ist DS was the first (proper) camera I owned. What is an S type screen, and how does it differ from a split screen focus screen?

I take it I could also get a new screen for the K5ii, but I vaguely remember people saying that these sorts of screens can impact on auto focus (or was it exposure), in which case I don't think I'd want to mess around with it. DS might still be an interesting option.

---------- Post added 13th Aug 2015 at 11:02 AM ----------

I suspect I won't get one in the end, but assuming I was to get a cheap Pentax DSLR, specifically for manual focus, are any of these particularly better than the others. (And, of course, are any of them unsuitable - not compatible with new focus screens.)
ist D
ist DS
ist DL
ist DL2
K10/Samsung GX10
K20/Samsung GX20

I guess I'll have a look at the camera reviews, but any thoughts on these - particularly in relation to manual focus - would be appreciated.

---------- Post added 13th Aug 2015 at 11:29 AM ----------

Sorry, one more question.

Looking at the camera reviews, the ist D and DS support has - I quote - "TTL flash automation (in addition to P-TTL) which is a big plus for flash photography with older lenses."

Pentax *ist DS2 - Pentax K-mount DSLRs - Pentax Camera Reviews and Specifications

The other DSLRs do not seem to have this feature.

So does p-ttl not work with old manual lenses. (Will have to have a play when I get home.) How does ttl work, and what is the advantage with, for example, M lenses.

Thanks again

similar to lakai's suggestion - did you have the camera set to manual focus? If you had it set to auto focus I assume you didn't quite have it in focus. As lakai says this would be the catch in focus. It won't take picture unless it is perfectly in focus. Which is very useful. And if you want the best of both worlds - catch in focus and the ability to take the photo when you want - you can use the AF button to cancel the need to be in focus so you can take the short any time.

Thanks everyone. Was tempted by the Sony, but based on these comments, I think I will stick with Pentax - and also think that I will stick with my K5ii for the moment (and keep using the trap focus). But whatever camera I upgrade to next, I'm sure it will have focus peaking.

I was very tempted by the K-S2 - particularly with the tilt screen as well as focus peaking - but I think there are things on the K5ii I'd miss.

Thanks

I appreciate someone has already asked this - but this was a while ago.
https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/137-photographic-industry-professionals/1...al-lenses.html

What camera would you recommend for using with Pentax manual focus lenses?

Needn't be a pentax camera. I would like focus peaking. Would be good if it was cheapish. Tilting screen would be a bonus, and probably mirrorless.

Is the K-01 the best option? I've heard the sony cameras have better focus peaking. Not sure if I like them though.(I don't like having to do everything through menus.)

What about the fuji x-e1? Is the focus peaking any good? Does it work well with pentax lenses.

And how do M lenses work on non-pentax cameras, without a green button? I assume you are not limited to shooting at the widest aperture.

Thanks

Hi,

I have not really had many problems with fringing, and so haven't used to corrections in lightrooms.

However, I have recently started using some old manual lenses, and have much more significant fringing now,so I looked up how to fix it.

The first video I watched basically said to go to the lens profile, choose the lens - problem fixed. But it doesn't have old lenses.

Other videos I watched seemed to have different versions of lightroom (I have 3.6).

So then I tried Scott Kelby's book for lightroom 3, basically suggesting you choose manual (in the lens correction), and slide the sliders. But this doesn't seem to be having any effect. So 2 questions:

1) Any ideas how I can do this more effectively. (Am I doing something wrong? I don't see anything happening as I move the sliders).

2) Would this be any easier with a newer version of lightroom?

Thanks

---------- Post added 3rd Aug 2015 at 01:23 AM ----------

this video uses an "eye dropper" -

You Tube

(about 2.20)

I assume this just isn't available in 3.6. Do I need to update my lightroom?

Why A K-S1 Instead Of The K-50 / K-30?

I guess it depends what you expect from the grip. It certainly isn't a grip you can just curl your fingers round, like most DSLRs. But I was happy with it. I liked the feel of it. (Though this is based on a quick look in the shop, not proper use over time.)

But, as I say, I certainly left liking the camera.

For me, this is like an upgrade of the K-01, rather than just another DSLR in the Pentax range. It is different and will appeal to different people.

This is actually (slightly) lighter than the K-01.

Apart from some people saying it was ugly (I liked it), the main complaints against the K-01 were 1) slow AF, 2) no view finder, and to some extent 3) lack of a grip.

Although in one sense this is a different type of camera (mirrorless v SLR), the K-S1 actually felt to me like a natural successor to the K-01, addressing the main complaints.

Not everyone wants the same thing in a camera, or use their cameras in the same way.

When I saw pictures of this camera I didn't think much of it. Now that I have had a chance to play with one in the shop, I am actually pretty impressed.

This would be great to use with the 40mm and 70mm primes etc.
