DA70 or Sigma 70mm macro??

You might also consider the Pentax 70mm Ltd with a Raynox DCR-150 addition for macro.

I'm considering it, anyway. I actually have the 100mm WR Macro, but the 70mm Ltd is lighter.

Shutter Count

Ah, that was it. Thanks. The count was "2". So now I know.

(This was my earliest photo with a new camera. And now I'm curious as to whether this includes the photo that the EXIF is attached to. Was it tested once in the factory, or twice?)

Really? Where? Even knowing what the value should be, I can't spot it. Nor can I see it with Kuso or PhotoME. (I'd rather not have to upload pictures to check it.)

K-30 Battery Life, what are you getting ??

As another data point, I put my K-30 into interval mode and let it take a picture every 5 seconds for a while. After a total of 1400 shots, the battery was still showing green. This was with Eneloops, no flash, and the rear monitor lit for about 2/3rds of them. I guess these results are too good to be representative of real use; there was probably less autofocus going on than normal, for example. Hence I don't think there's much point in further testing with interval shooting.

Shutter Count

I tried that with my K-30 and I can see "shutter speed", but I don't see shutter count. Does it have a different name, or does the K-30 not include shutter count in exif?

K-30 colors; which did you buy?

I had a choice between black K-30 with kit lens, blue K-30 without kit, or red K-50 with kit. I went for the blue K-30 and bought the "kit" lens separately. That cost me more money but I think it was worth it to get the colour I wanted. (I think someone was selling lenses that had been liberated from kits; I didn't pay the full 18-135mm price.)

I wanted a coloured camera because I'd like to be under-estimated. I didn't want red because I thought it might be too bright for discreet street photography. It turns out the blue is a bit more noticeable than I'd intended, but it's so gorgeous I don't mind.

How to best cushion camera and lenses while traveling internationally?

For lenses I use soft pouches. For the camera I use a Danke protective wrap, which has similar effect to a pouch. Both then go in a backpack for carry-on.

I don't use a dedicated camera bag, partly because they tend to be bulky, and partly because I don't want to advertise my photographic gear.

Pentax To Announce the K-3 Full Frame DSLR At Photokina

My theory is that they are using Q and K-01 to dip their toes in the mirrorless market without cannibalising sales from their SLRs. They're experiments. They knew they'd only appeal to people who don't use viewfinders (ie, nobody here), and they were fine with that. They are keeping their powder dry.

Prime Use? Share your thoughts please....

As a novice I like Ltd primes for their small size and weight as well as image quality. I don't have a good long prime because I don't feel I can afford the weight (and the price doesn't help). My current load-up is 15mm Ltd, 40mm Ltd, and 55-300mm DAL. None of these is especially fast; but I haven't found that to be a problem . (I have a 50mm f/1.7, which I find hard to use wide open.) Using a zoom at the longer end means I can zoom out to find my subject, then zoom in for the picture.

I switch lenses quite a lot. I have an 18-250mm superzoom for when convenience is more important than image quality. But even then, I can rarely school myself to leave the 15mm behind. I have a 100mm macro, too, so really I am 15mm + 40mm + whatever big lens I think I need. I don't like to carry more than one big lens. I will get a 200mm or 300mm one day, but they are so big and heavy I doubt they will get much casual use so I need a definite event for them.

Pentax...if you make a FF...make it SMALL!

It sounds like you wouldn't be interested in a Full-frame Mirrorless, then. It's a combination that makes a lot of sense to me, if they get the EVF right (which is a big "if", admittedly), for getting maximum image quality into the smallest size and weight. I think the physical limit on how small you could make it would be roughly the same as the usability limit: some of us have large hands and want lots of large buttons.

Poll: Do you prefer AA or Lithium Ion?

I prefer AAs because they let me use a single charger (and cable) for my camera, shaver, toothbrush, GPS, radio and water-purifier. My devices share a pool of Eneloops and I can move batteries between devices if I have to. Although you can get spare Li-Ion batteries, they tend to be different for each device and it's not practical to carry so many. Also, they aren't cheap, and they have finite lifetime, so for me it's not worth the investment in Li-Ion.

I try not to buy Alkalines, because they tend to leak, but I do like having the option of Lithium AA for lightness, low temperature performance, and capacity.

I hate Li-Ion because every manufacture does it a different way and there are no standards. It is getting a bit better now with USB charging. I have a charger that does USB, AA and AAA so that does all my gadgets. I picked my K-x partly because of the AA batteries, but if they made a camera with Li-Ion that could charge from USB I would consider it.

I'm talking about Live View, reviewing of photos taken, and general use of the menu system between shots. As I wrote, quite clearly, in #103.

That point has already been addressed. I have the impression you are not paying attention.

I don't think anyone does. The thread moved away from that (see #44). Touch screens don't require Android.

FF is always going to cost more than the equivalent APS-C. The people willing to pay that price premium will also want the camera to be premium in other ways. Although I think a FF mirrorless does make some sense, I can't see it being cheap or entry-level, nor do I see Pentax having two FF cameras (one mirrorless, one with a mirror) at the same time.

True. On the other hand, diffraction can prevent you benefiting from higher pixel density, which is what bossa was saying. Arguably, there is not much point going from 16 megapixels to 24 unless you also go from APS-C to FF.

A touch UI offers more direct manipulation. For example, navigating menus is more direct than using arrow keys to move a cursor up/down/left/right and then hit OK when the cursor is where you want. It's much easier to just touch the thing you want when you can see it on the screen. Zooming and panning are also more direct, and setting focus point is a natural fit to touch too.

I've never had a problem with my own phone (HTC Desire HD).

Agreed. But there is also a lot time using the camera when it isn't pushed against our eyes. Anything done with Live View, and all reviewing of shots taken, plus quite a lot of set-up.

No-one is saying functions will disappear. A touch-screen takes the same space as a normal screen. It adds without taking anything away. You can still have all your old buttons.

It's just that those things that would benefit from touch, can now do so. (I have the same argument about touch-screens on laptops. Some people seem to think that if it isn't used exclusively, it's useless.)

(Incidentally: "flimsy, childish, touch screen apps"? I'm not talking about apps here, but basic build-it camera functions.Where does "flimsy" come from? Or "childish"? "Adult" does not have to be synonymous with "harder to use".)

Pentax already have a smaller mount, the Q. (They also have a larger mount, but I don't think that's where you're going with this.) The first Q-mount camera has a small sensor, but I'd be astonished if the mount couldn't support a larger one. For people who care more about small size than image quality, the Q-mount is well-placed. If the market shift you talk about happens in future, Pentax can put more resources into the Q-mount range.

(Maybe you think Pentax got it wrong with the Q, but if so, there's no reason to think they get it right if they tried yet again.)

That you know two phones that get it wrong, doesn't mean that the technology doesn't exist and works in other phones.

To fix the problem someone raised with touchscreens. Touchscreens provide better user interfaces than cursor-keys and OK buttons. Not when your eye is pressed the viewfinder, of course, but at other times. Think about how virtually all phones and tablets use touch now.

Good point, although I count 3 mounts (Q, K, 645). In the long run, maybe there would be more technology share between a K-0x APS-C mirrorless and a FF mirrorless. (I see both K-01 and Q as ways to experiment with mirrorless technology without cannibalising their high-end sales; hence why K-01 was crippled by lack of viewfinder/articulated screen.)

It could use a proximity sensor to disable the touch-screen when your face is close. Touch-screen mobile phones have a similar issue, with ears instead of noses, so the solution already exists.

Agreed. Tablets should be a good fit, being portable enough to take with you but having a bigger screen than the back of a camera.

I think phones are still a bit too small, but cameras can benefit from technology developed for phones. The proximity sensor mentioned above is one example. "Pairing by bump" could be another, if the camera has accelerometers.

On 2, given a FF can be cropped to give identical result to APS-C, presumably the valid reasons for wanting APS-C are size, weight and price.

I'm not that poster, but I happened to be in the area last Wednesday, with a rare bit of good weather. This is from the Skirrid, looking towards the Sugar Loaf, Abergavenny just out of sight to the left.

If you click, you should find a few more in the same set (including some of Lord Hereford's Knob actually in the Black Mountains), but none of them are up to the standards of this thread.

Anything to do for a scratched lens?
Posted By Brangdon
Replies: 26

The issue is whether there is any noticeable difference in photos taken. If you compare the area blocked by the scratches with the total area of the lens, the proportion is tiny. Probably less than 1%. So the effect probably won't be visible to the naked eye. Where-as a UV filter might block 3% of the light, across the entire area, so will have more of an effect.

(3% was for the only filter I could find that gave a figure. I couldn't find transmission figures for the B&W filters you prefer.)

You should compare the certainty of the $50 cost against the possibility of the $500 cost. If you have 10 lenses, you can use the money saved by not buying 10 filters to replace a lens if it does get scratched. In practice, scratches are rare. And as argued above, a scratched lens is still usable, and should still have some resale value if you feel you must replace it.
