Pentax K10D - An Anniversary

Though I got my first camera when I was 20 (way back in 2000), I didn't get serious about photography until late 2007. By that time, I was using my company's Panasonic FZ30, which was a good camera, but definitely had it's limitations, so I was seriously considering purchasing a DSLR.
In January 2008, after seeing a doctor and a neurologist, and some early testing, I found out that I most likely had ALS. After learning of my devastating health prognoses, I basically said **** it, it's now or never, so exactly 10 years ago today, I walked into my local camera shop and bought myself a Pentax K10D kit.
Over the next 3 years I wouldn't hardly go anywhere without the K10D. I took thousands of terrible photos (and a few good ones), but I also learned a ton.
In the years since, I have switched pretty much completely to shooting film, and haven't actually used the K10D since 2013. I never got rid of it through, a it still works perfectly.
Since it was 10 years to the day since I bought it, I decided to make it a special occasion and take the K10D out on the town. My good friend and fellow member GerryM came over, and we headed out into the big city of Talent, Oregon.
We walked around for a couple hours, and with Gerry's help, and my K10D mounted to my wheelchair, we took a couple dozen photos around Talent.
After getting home today, I processed the PEF raw files in ACDSee Pro 6, then ran the resulting jpegs through ColorEfex Pro (with my own recipe), and then I picked my favorites to share here. I used the 18-55 AL II kit lens for all the photos.

First, here's a photo of my K10D,

And here are the photos from today.

K3 Crazy Mirror Sickness (Mirror Flapping Lockup) - Report Yours Here!

Different people have been told different things. However, it's pretty obvious to me that FW1.11, while it does not fix the issue, does address it, as per the (admittedly cryptic) release notes: "Added automatic reset function when detecting rarely occur abnormal motion of the sequence. (When automatic reset function is operated, latest setting will be reset)".

The existence of an actual fix via a non-publicly available FW update is certainly possible, but personally as long at the mirror doesn't keep flapping indefinitely when it happens, and if the problem remains totally infrequent, I'm unlikely to send my K-3 in for a repair. I'd rather be out shooting with the camera than spend several weeks without it!

gjtoth... I would try to make a strong case to Pentax/Precision that this issue is a known flaw in the camera and should be covered by them, even if it's beyond warranty.

Free film simulation – RawTherapee with Hald CLUT

I played a little with the new function of RawTherapee (free raw development software) which enables simulation of many negative and slide films. I found the results worthwhile, so decide to post some examples on the Forum. More information on this new RT function: http://50.87.144.65/~rt/w/index.php?title=Film_Simulation

Please find below the jpg's - no real fine tuning conducted, as I think this should be just a starting point. While editing you can also decrease the Film Simulation effect - I used 100% strength. The first picture has no film color effect added.

K-3 Mirror Flop Fix From Ricoh

OK. I just got back from picking up my K-3 at C.R.I.S. All my custom settings were intact, even though the camera was released and returned with no battery in it. I checked the date/time setting, and it was on target. At first I thought there was a problem with automatic focusing, but they had re-set the focus lever to manual. Simply flipping it back to autofocus cured that, although I had a momentary start.

They indicated the following on the receipt:

REPAIRED MIRROR OVERRUN PROBLEM
CLEANED AND CHECKED TO MANUFACTURER'S SPECIFICATIONS

Needless to say, I will continue to use the camera in my normal manner, and if I encounter the mirror flutter problem again, I will be all over Pentax like gravy on a necktie, and will definitely let everyone here know.
I do NOT anticipate any problems, trusting that the problem has been examined by the experts and that a fix has been applied. I would also hope that others who have had warranty service on the mirror flutter problem will sound off loud and clear if the problem re-occurs after the "fix."

Hope everyone else's experience with C.R.I.S. will be as satisfactory as mine. I think they did a good job.

Focus stacking

software like Zerene Stacker will "compensate" for subtle change of perspective with ordinary macro lenses. I use it all the time. That being said, using a focusing rail and moving the camera body does provide for a better stack. Here is a link to a stack I did last summer using a bellows and moving the body:

here is a stack I did recently using a "normal" camera lens (i.e. changing focus manually between shots):

In both cases, Zerene Stacker did the trick admirably.

I think that this is a typical use case that Pentax intended, when a customer uses K-3 with Flucard.

K-3 Power-on issue

Here's an update on my power-on issue. I got a replacement D-BG5 grip from the latest batch received by my local Pentax dealer. It did not solve the problem. Since it now appears that the fault lies with the K-3 I decided to send it and the grip into Pentax for them to fix the problem under warranty. I was told to expect it back in 6-8 weeks. :(
That should be the end of it for me. I will report back either way. Hopefully when it comes back fixed, an explanation will be included.

The Australian Pentax distributor, CR Kennedy, bundled a generic Flucard Pro with the K-3. This card is not the proprietary Flucard, which will carry the Pentax branding.

There is some confusion about whether this card is working correctly with the K-3, as the card is not recognized in the wireless settings menu in the K-3. However, the generic Flucard does seem to work correctly, by following the operating instructions provided with the card.

The K-3 does recognize the generic Flucard as an SD card. For this reason, I believe that these cards are working as intended in the K-3, and that the menu options for the Flucard will only be applicable to the Pentax proprietary Flucard.

Power on issues

Same thing here. Seems to only happen with the grip attached and with a battery in the grip.
Steps to reproduce:
battery in both body and grip
attach the grip
power off
wait
after a varying amount of time, but usually no more than 20minutes, it won't power on without pulling out both batteries
Thought it might be just me.
I smell a bug.
So far, leaving the grip attached but with a battery in the body only avoids the problem.
