Pentax HSS/Powersync/hypersync Off Camer Flash Tutorial

I love it. I would recommend it to people depending on their needs. It is small and light but requires more setting up than a speedlight. It is powerful for it's size but recycle time at full power is 2 to 2.5 seconds. I absolutely love being able to control the power from the transmitter on camera. I also really love that the godox latest range is completely integrated with their trigger system. This means that the next lights I buy will all be Godox. I already have two V850 lithium Ion speedlights and love them. The battery for all of them lasts for an outstanding amount of shots.

I am toying with whether I need to get the AD600BM for the extra power. I am thinking I need it less now that I have HSS working. I haven't tried the AD360 at my favourite portrait shooting time with my big softbox, so I don't know if I need more power yet.

Yest it is the mk1 version. Just tested at 1/4 power. The first 2 pops were instantaneous and the next were between 1/2 and 1/4 of a sec between bursts

I think you have it confused. The flash system is manual only. The cactus can do everything provided the flash is capable.

this particular brand of manual flash can do it at 1/8th power to full power. I have not yet tested how it will do without activating the hss on the AD360. I assume I will get somewhere around 1/2000-1/4000 before I see the curtain. I might play with that today to see how fast I can go at how low power and report back.

I dont feel that there were any problems I need fixing?

---------- Post added 12-09-16 at 10:47 PM ----------

jeez I made and shared the video to help people achieve something that I had wanted for ages. Fact is, it allows us to reach max 1/8000sec sync speeds. No it doesnt allow Pttl but it doesnt bother me as I don't use it anyway. The technicalities are pointless with the names as I have explained exactly what the outcome is. Full flash coverage at 1/8000 shutter speed with a hss capable flash. If you want to find these other little things out, you can buy one and find out for yourself.
No good deed goes unpunished I suppose....

yeah it will trick the camera to send the pulse, just depends if the flash can have a flash duration long enough which is what setting the ad360 to hss will activate

I have made a quick tutorial video on how to trick pentax into Powersync (closest I can get to HSS with the flash I have) I don't really do tute videos so this is very rough. I hope this helps people to do what I have hoped I would one day be able to do with pentax for portraits.
All of this applies to the K3 as well.

A good lens helps. My favorite is the sigma 85mm f1.4. You could do this with a 50mm f1.4 but youmwould have a less blurry background and a wider field of view which would take a little emphasis off the model. A telephoto zoom lens of any sort could render similar look.
Communication with the model is important. I dont like to pose them and shoot. Tell them to pretend it is a video and they need to move around slowley into different poses. Then snap away.
Post production, I check the levels in lightroom, which I like to start out with a little more shadow. Import to photoshop and play with a colour balance layer which changes the colour balance in 3 stages (shadows, midtones and highlights). I use it to get the skin tones. then create an orangey yellow fill layer and, set it to overlay blending mode and blend it to the right amount and mask out the model.
It is important to have a screen that produces correct colours. I use an imac.

Thank you for the lovely comments. Alot of time and effort has gone into learning how to ballance colours to get the tones I want in lightroom and photoshop. More importantly, what the image should look like out of the camera. Time of day is hugely important, and when naturally lighting the subject, where the subject is with respect to the light source I.e. the sun.

Manual exposure all the way. I use centre point focus , point at the eyes, half press shutter for focus lock and then recompose. I just use the screen to judge my exposure. I usually shoot to get shallow depth of field for portraits. Thank you mfor the kind comments :-)

Taken on a sunny afternoon. Beautiful time of year at a birthday party next to the Blue Mountains, Australia.
This was one of many keepers, and one of my favourite photos that i have ever taken.

I like how quick the k30s processor is for reviewing photos. I prefer its screen and how decisive it is in focusing.
I have noticed that the noise can be a little more obvious in the k30.
I use them both side by side regularly for events and weddings. Sometimes I find the one better than the other with no real justified reason and swap at the next shoot.
I just wish their jpeg engines and modes were the same. I always shoot in raw but it is confusing when you shoot with the same settings on both cameras and they bothlook different when reviewing.

Just see if they have a hardware calibrator. it is incredibly simple once you have one of those. you dont have to do any calibrations manually

To get a proper colour and contrast representation, you need to have a calibrated screen on your computer. Otherwise its like trying to mix a music abum using you phone speaker. It just doesnt represent the final result properly and will look very different to the print. On way to do this is to take your photo to a print shop and then compare the print to your photo on the screen. Then try to change the screen settings to match the print. Otherwise buy a spyder calibrator or the equivelent.
