Pentax HSS/Powersync/hypersync Off Camer Flash Tutorial

I have made a quick tutorial video on how to trick pentax into Powersync (closest I can get to HSS with the flash I have) I don't really do tute videos so this is very rough. I hope this helps people to do what I have hoped I would one day be able to do with pentax for portraits.
All of this applies to the K3 as well.

I think you have it confused. The flash system is manual only. The cactus can do everything provided the flash is capable.

People Cheri; The Amazing Ballerina

I had posted a casting on my facebook page to shoot a ballerina. I was very lucky to have an old school friend recommend a dancer that she knew through the dance school that her daughter goes to.
The Ballerina named Cheri (pronounced Cheree) approached me through Facebook email and we set up a shoot. I showed her some ideas and we organised a time to shoot at my house which I had recently moved in to.
She turned up looking amazing and we started with easy poses and shots. We then moved on to some more difficult poses in pointe. After that we did some beauty shots with natural window light. Let me tell you, the talent and professionalism of this 18 year old girl was just inspiring!
She was bubbly and willing to work hard to achieve her goals and dreams.

I actually had the camera in RAW, but with a monochrome setting for the JPEG preview for the whole shoot. I had never done this before, but because it was an art shoot, the goal was for mainly black and white shots, I thought it would be fitting to try this.
Let me tell you it is so much easier to review your shots this way and there are less distractions, and the exposure is what you concentrate on. This surprised me and I recommend others try it who have cameras post K5.
Many of the medium format digital backs only had black and white previews until recently.

For post processing, I used Ligtroom 5. I only made colour or monochrome adjustments for many of these and otherwise it was just a small amount of spot healing.
I used Bowens Esprit 1000's for most shots. The front light was using a general snoot of about 8" and the rim light which was used on the black tutu shots was a 22" beauty dish. Because my house is very bright, the whole thing is a massive reflector. So I used the black side of my large 2m x 1.5m rectangular reflector to block the reflections created by the opposite wall to the flash.

I hope you like the results :-)

Pick one and take photos and stop worrying about what you didnt get in not going with the other. It is built for a purpose, they both serve that purpose bloody well. I know, I have both. and am very happy to use either in any situation, though the K30 is my video go to camera.

Quit worrying!!!

new K30 owner... still undecided

I have a K5 and K7 and now a new K30. I bought the K30 due to its Video capabilities. It that area it smashes the K5. If i didn't need video, I would have bought another K5 as the is helpful to have 2 of the same cameras at events and weddings etc. However, the controls sometimes annoy me on the K30 as they are not the same and i do not like using the main screen to she my settings as it wastes batteries.
What i do like is, when at events, i put my 70-200 f2.8 on the k30 and the 16-50 f2.8 on my K5 with grip. I will use the K5 most of the time, but the K30 with the 70-200 is similar in weight to the k5, battery grip and 16-50. they are almost even. i use a holster setup that goes over my shoulders like a backpack and i have one camera at each side. It works for me. but if it annoys you, go with 2 K5's. I am happy that i am getting two cameras with almoth the exact same image quality with different features and strengths in different fields.

Here are a few of my favourite family photos that I have done over the past couple of years.
All lenses used were sigma. A couple were with the 105mm f2.8 macro, some with the 70-200mm f2.8 and some with the 85mm f1.4

Pentax and glamour photography.

Hi guys. I would just like to point out that i rarely see any glamour photographers using Pentax gear. I have been using Pentax since the K10D and have been shooting glamour for about 5-6 years along with many other genres of photography.

I would love to see any other people's work in glamour photography with Pentax gear. I currently use the K5 as main body and K7 as a backup and a whole lot of sigma lenses with my favourite being their 85mm f1.4.

I will post some of my glamour work and a link to a guys work who frequently does cover shoots for the likes of Vogue and Harper's Bazaar magazines over in france.

Is K30 "better" then the K5?

I don't think that 14bit has to do with dynamic range. it affects colour depth. Dynamic range will be slightly different due to the option for iso80 on the K5. You will not likely notice the difference between 14bit and 12bit. I was talking to the people at pentax australia about this.

K30 = better video with the ability to shoot at 60fps @ 720p amongst other things, slightly better image clarity, slightly lower colour depth. Less ISO range. more battery options, improved AF

K5 = quiter, slighly faster burst rate, much larger battery capacity, slightly more colour depth, better build quality.

The fact is, most won't notice the difference. The will both excel at different things. I will have both soon, one for the video function and the the other for the battery life. Image quality is going to be an almost unnoticeable difference and i believe that they will make a killer team at weddings together!
