Great job D4V1D, a good design and a very creative idea. Like others have mentioned, it won't be outdated so quickly. :D I'm just happy to be one of the honorable mentions. :)

Anyone have samples from Sigma 28-105 UC-II ?

I just saw that the review with samples was yours. Whoops!

It seems there's someone who reviewed more recently than you who agreed. I've heard only middling things about any of the Sigma UC lenses. I thought about pulling the trigger on the 2.8-4.5 version a while ago but I read that it's performance didn't top the DA-50-200 I already have, and that 2.8 aperture was only available at the extreme wide end.

It may be small beans compared to buying a Limited or DA* lens, but I was going to buy the DA35mm new. I typically buy used (Marketplace FTW), but I was going to treat myself. I waited until the fall because I have a trip coming up, but when I saw the prices had jumped, I held off, and I popped for a different used lens instead for this trip.

I think my banner looks great without the profile pic change, and would let it stand on its own merits. As Adam mentioned, the main focus is on the banner, and that was my focus too. The profile pic enhances the look but my banner looks good with the existing profile pic. It's a courtesy bit of design work I did in advance in case they pick mine. As mentioned I merely wanted to make sure I wasn't disqualified for including something extra.

I submitted my banner/profile pic late last night but didn't receive a reply confirming it (as mentioned in the post) . . . is that because of the sheer volume of submissions you're getting?

You seem to have missed the part right before the part you quoted:

My definition of a sheltered area is off the street, away from dirt, sand, etc. If I have to change lenses outside or, worse, at the beach or other dusty environment, of course I would never use a rocket blower. Ducking into a shop (not a book shop) and changing the lens over a counter or my sling bag is about as controlled an environment as I could expect at home, and if I had previously been in a dusty environment, I would use the rocket blower on the outside first, then move away from the cloud of dust and change the lens, again using the rocket blower.
And of course I wouldn't use the blower on the hind end of a zoom lens. Where did I say that?
Again, I appreciate your concern but as I mentioned I used the K-x for 2+ years and I got two specs of dust on the sensor after the 2 year mark. If my method were prone to blowing my mirror box full of pollen, dust and sand, it would have happened in Vermont that one summer, or maybe on the coast of Maine, or those lavender fields I visited in France last year. . . . but it didn't.

I had a strange issue where focus on Auto 5 chose a higher-contrast point than where it appeared to place the focus indicator in the VF, but I'm fairly sure that's user error. Other than that one issue, I have had Zero problems with my K-5 autofocus.

Yesterday, in very low tungsten-temp light in my house, my K-5 nailed focus on a shirt about 15 feet away, with no real contrasty edges to detect. Compared with my K-x, I couldn't be more thrilled with the K-5's autofocus.

You would never see the difference if you never tweak your RAW files (in which case you should be shooting JPEG). When you process the RAW files and you start manipulating the histogram, stretching some parts, and compressing others to develop the photo the way you want, you have more granularity to work with. For example. Over expose a JPEG by 1.5 stops. When you pull that file into Aperture (or lightroom), pull the histogram down until the darkest pixels are black. The histogram starts to look like a comb, meaning you're going to have posterization and banding. With 12-bit raw, that rarely happens, but with the dynamic range of the K-5 and the K-30, there are situations where I feel better having 14 bit raw.

Case in point, and this is not a great photo, but it's one that I intentionally did the above process with. The clouds are blown out, so I shouldn't have over-exposed that much.

The detail shown throughout the range, especially in the shadows, is what I'm talking about.

It works throughout the range, too. Say you intentionally over-expose a shot to create a high-key picture. If you want to pull the dark levels down in post to make the contrast pop, you can go further without as much risk of banding.

If I understand you, you're saying it you want to be able to use the AF Assist lamp only when you use the AF button on the back? That's an interesting idea. I was kind of wondering why that button was there, when the half-depressed shutter does the same thing. I'd also like a way to selectively force use of the lamp. If only pentax took suggestions on firmware ideas

Honestly, it looks only a little more squared off/bulky than the K-5, which doesn't feel overly big or difficult to get around to my medium-large hands. There's some definite learning to do (green button in a different place from my K-x, two wheels), but that's to be expected with any new camera. A T3i shooter who works at my office (a woman with smaller hands) remarked when she picked it up: "The grip is SO comfortable!" She also mentioned how light it was compared to her T3i. If you look at the cameras side by side (on that comparator site), it looks like they made the grip 1mm taller, and pushed the trigger out about 3mm. I can see how the green button might be a little hard to access, even compared to where it is on the K-r. If you're coming from a K-x or K-r, the layout will be familiar.

Really, I think that says a lot. Pentax wants people to move from the K-x and K-r to the K-30, thus why the controls layouts are so similar. They took that layout, stretched it out a little, added a few more controls, but kept everything where those folks were used to it. . . .meaning those who came from a K-r to the K-30 will find the transition natural. I'm sure the K-3's layout will be similar to the K-5's (or identical, jeeez how many more buttons could they possibly add?).

But conversely, economically, it's the worst time to buy a K-30 (as the price never be higher, and will likely drop $1-200 within a year) and the best time to buy a K-5 (as it is at its lowest price ever, and will soon be unavailable new). Beach Camera blew out some K-5's for $799 last week and they may make their way into price clubs like Costco.

Okay, my K-5 just arrived, I'm going to stop bothering you folks in the K-30 threads. :D

The Photographer's K-30 Review

It does seem like they're more interested in a larger number of short "reviews" that generate more buzz. However, it would seem that Imaging-Resource and DPReview have review units. From reading the K-5 review, though, it doesn't seem like PF was provided an advance review unit 2 years ago, so I'm not sure Pentax is intentionally slighting PF. Besides, I don't believe any reviews were allowed to be published before the firmware was finalized, which would be anywhere in the last couple of weeks. So the biggest jump PF could have been given was 2 weeks at most.

Adorama or B&H could have given PF a leg up by sending Adam & co one of their demo units for the review, and maybe that is what they're doing.

Not to mention his big suggestion for Pentax is to implement Hasselblad's proprietary focus system (he can't even spell Hasselblad right either). Oh really genius? Should Pentax also rip off Zeiss's proprietary lens designs? To continue the car analogy, it'd be like that same Mustang reviewer suggesting that Ford use Mercedes Benz' proprietary engine port-and-polish process. :hmm:

Well the Phoblographer's review didn't.

Then again, he didn't seem to be aware of any other Pentax cameras other than the K-30. Not exactly well researched. His discussion of shake reduction is two sentences long. Also he doesn't spell check when talking about "facits" of the camera. :hmm:

I do see the stuck pixel on the left side, but since the OP mentions "These are not Dust marks", it would seem he is talking about the plethora of marks on the photo which look like he had water sprayed on his front element or a ton of dust on his sensor.

+9 My K-x had two such marks this spring, showed up on all 800+ pics of my trip to new york in post. Quite annoying, but it was the first time I had dust on the sensor in 2 years with a non-WR camera! I attribute this to my anal retentive lens-changing method: always change lenses in a sheltered area, with the camera facing down, using a rocket blower before mounting the new lens.

The two specs in question were barely visible, but they made spots on the image bigger than yours. I had to do the mirror-up sensor cleaning mode and the rocket blower to get them off.

I definitely hear you . . . but coming from a K-x, I know that even if the K-5's AF has a flaw, it's miles better than what I'm used to. I actually had opportunity to use a sync cable at a friend's studio the other day, and instead I had to use optical trigger, which only set off one of two of the lights. I also do some video work that would be nice to get a cheap lavalier mic with but not have to involve a digital interface and a PC or an expensive Zoom or something. Easier to edit.

More than that, though, I I'm going to need to use this camera for the next three years, and the metal body is important to me. About a year ago, my K-x slid off a chair less than 2 feet from my wood floor, and it caused a stress crack on the upper case. I won't be able to afford the K-3, and many of the hands-on reports from forumites who have handled the K-30 say the K-5's build quality is higher.
