Question. I have a poor quality lightweight velbon and a beast of a manfrotto I originally purchased to use with a 4x5 view camera. I've never tried so my question is, will the manfrotto work with an SLR (are the threads on the quick release plate going to be compatible)? Also, is it overkill for such a use? I don't have the best camera or lenses for it but I've been experimenting with shooting the moon and I am trying to take all the necessary steps to minimize camera movement.

Oooo. Very good tip. Would not have realized that on my own and probably would have caused some consternation.

Thanks. That is pretty much what I figured. Is this function available on any DSLR or is there simply no demand for such a feature?
Personally, my conceptualization of AE-L is that it should be a function that prevents the camera from making any changes that will break consistency from photo to photo once activated but maybe I'm not using it the way most photographers do (i.e. lock correct subject exposure then recompose, etc...).

Let me preface by saying I tried looking in the K-7 manual and searching around on here but I couldn't find anything as pertains to my question.
I often use the auto exposure lock and shoot in raw when capturing multiple images for photostitching. When I do this, I often batch process in rawtherapee with one preset for all images to be stitched. Unless there is a noticeable color cast I default to the camera's auto white balance setting. When stitching I sometimes notice that one or a few images have distinctly different white balances, so it seems that the auto-exposure lock does not lock down the white balance? Is this the case? Is there any way to enable such a setting? It seems like it would be a logical extension of the AE-L function...
Currently it seems the only way I'd have of going about it would be to take the time to set a custom WB prior to shooting but since I work almost exclusively in raw it seems kind of pointless to me to make any WB changes in camera...
Thanks in advance for any help!

are there any good open source *nix friendly NR filters out there? i have feen fond of rawtherapee lately but its own nr filter isn't so great. havent really poked around for one in gimp because i try to do as much processing as possible outside it since it won't handle 16bit images.

i am familiar with this concept. i believe the underlying reason is that sensors in use in dslrs respond linearly to light whereas film/eyes exhibit logarithmic response...

yeah it was during a heat streak in destin. 90+ and high humidity even most evenings... I was definitely giving the camera a workout as well; this one was prolly captured after ~50 5-10s exposures
i imagine that the heat issues are part of a compromise for which the payoff is better/faster electronics and more 'options' for such a small and lightweight body...
is it really worth it to pixel map? is it superior to removing them with photoshop/gimp/whatever? (i had no problem doing so with gimp for the final version of this image)

Can someone elaborate on the causes of the hot pixels and how pixel mapping corrects them?

oops i forgot to mention, this is pushed up 2 stops worth in my raw editor...would that make the difference?
if not, what would be the correct course of action here? advice greatly appreciated!

This image was shot on a K-7 with the standard DA 18-55 kit lens @23mm f/5.6 10s 100iso. I had been shooting many images back to back and i have heard this causes sensor heat buildup which can lead to the banding, but are the intensely blown out pixels also normal?
shopped all the dots out for the final version and it looks pretty decent at about 4x6 but wont go much larger than that thanks to excessive noise. to really see the pixels i am referring to need to click the image for the original size...they are scattered uniformly through out the entire frame... |
