I am in about the same place as you it seems. I have a new K-X I am learning to use. I am trying to photograph my kids doing sports.
Here is one I got, that I am pleased with: Volleyball900by600.JPG
This was done with the 55-300 lens at 55mm, 1/200, f4, and 3200 iso. It is a compression of the full frame taken in the best jpg mode.
As pleased as I am with this picture (very), I think your picture looks better than mine.
Aside from buying a $1,000+ lens, I wonder how can I (we) make better pictures?

I have a Tamrac 5625. The k-x with the 55-300 lens fits well. I like it, it is not a cheaply made bag. It was not cheap. You might not like it because the lens does rest on the bottom of the bag.

When I was a teenager I played with an old rangefinder and also a bellows camera that my Dad had stored away, and even had a part time darkroom in one of the baths. Somehow in those days I came in possession of a Pentax brochure and I had dreams of buying a real nice SLR camera like the ones in my booklet.
Now I am few years and a few basic point and shoot cameras later in life, and finally followed through on buying a nice SLR for myself. I seriously considered some other brands but after reading reviews and price shopping, I decided on a Pentax K-x with two lens kit. UPS brought it today.
