Decisions on a new (used) camera K-3, K-3 II, k-5 iis, or KP

You mentioned using PSE.
It that Photoshop Elements or Photoshop Express?

I am solid PC around here except for an iPad I just bought (first Apple product in over 20 years) and I only got that because I have some music software and the Android port kind stinks, so I got the iPad because it is the easiest.

Last night I was going through all my different options, looking at all the deals (both new and used) from multiple shops, went through the math of all the different packages and options......While I could have saved a little, it was not enough to justify going with a used one, even if it had a low shutter count. There were two cameras that I really liked that were the Limited versions of the KP and K1 II (black and gold) but the prices I felt were too much for my needs, and really I need it to do what it should, not be a show piece.

So with everything I trolled over.J
I bought the K1 II package deal......and after going back and forth with the seller, I am taking a gamble on the one on eBay and bought that one late last night. Just had a gut feeling about it,hopefully I am not wrong. I figure that even if it has a slightly higher shutter count than what I really wanted, it is still in exceptional shape and if it was used; it was not used much, if at all. I got a bunch more extra pictures and info from the guy, I know you can tell from the pictures he had, but the extra ones (with a lot of detailed shots) looked immaculate, So wish me luck, pray, meditate, or just send good vibes on me making what was hopefully a good choice.

The K1 says it will be here on the 15th :D:D:D

And after all that I am still thinking I will keep the K-5. I would only get a few hundred for it. and after all the talking, research, delving into old posts, and tests between multiple cameras...I honestly do feel now that when I got it, I had zero personal time, was very high strung, always in a rush, and focusing on my career...After all this talking, testing, comparing, and research, as well as just being relaxed and getting used to it, I am almost completely sure I was way too short with it and did not take the time to get used to it. Considering my last two dslr's were the *ist d and the K100D, this was a huge step up and quite different from what I was used to; The control layout, size, feel, and not having a lot of time to just get used to it, along with falling back on cameras that I didn't have to think about because I knew them so well and were less complex and I did not have to be so involved or take the time to get used to it, all of that made me jump the gun and be very rash with my feelings and decisions with it.

So end result is that I am finding myself liking the K-5, and yes I bought the other two.....but the K1 was one that I had wanted since it was released and the collective opinions of many users has piqued my interest and I just have to try one out.

Been looking for a KP and found one on eBay (I know, I know), but it looks like it is in fantastic condition, the seller says it came from an estate sale and when I asked him if he could do a shutter check, he looked at the link I sent him and said "sorry, it was beyond his skill lever).

So I don't know the shutter count, but the condition and that it is all nicely wrapped, he also sent better pictures of the battery grip and it looks like brand new.

I'll put the link below and the choice would be to take the gamble or hold?

Is the software that the comes in the package deal decent. In the past I have used pixel, have tried photoraw, tried GIMP but it was during the time I had my photography fallout, and right now I recently loaded up Paint.NET.
Going back and forth on a new one or the low count one because I usually like to pick and choose, but i need to look at the package deal again and see what is included, the only thing I can think of is the memory... the other stuff I might want to use some of my stuff and also purchase a two body backpack. That is why I was thinking the low count one might be the one to go with.

I was digging through storage yesterday and I found a bunch of stuff, but not a lot of K mount. Only thing I found was an older Sigma AF-1 75-300 1:4.5~5.6 and I don't recall using it in the past.... so not sure.
What are some other lenses that would work on any of the cameras listed, obviously not the K1 or kaf4.

Nice low count KP's are hard to find, all of them that I found are 10, 20, 30 thousand shutter releases..... to me that seems like people obviously like them. I am looking for a super low count (less than 1,000, but for a very clean one I could go up to 3,000), there is one that I requested a shutter count on.

One extra addition is a question made in another thread.
Posted by Rryan14

"One question I have is regarding auto-ISO in 'P' mode. Regarding the maximum ISO, what do you think is the highest decent ISO setting? I have it set to 100-6400 and the camera seems to frequently pick 3200, which strikes me as rather high for much of the light I've been in (outdoors, winter opaque New England skies). Is auto-ISO reliable?"

From everything I have read ISO of 3200 is the max you want it set on, and it really does seem to prefer 3200 for a lot of my shots and even with an ISO of 3200 it is still choosing some low shutter speeds when indoors in a nicely and naturally lit room and even outside (Houston Texas) if I manually set it on anywhere from 200 to 1600.

So...Is this normal or is it a possible issue with the camera/metering system?

One last item that I just remembered.
I like to have what comes out of my Camera be 95% or higher a more than an exceptional picture when viewed directly from the camera into my laptop. I do not like to reply on PP when capturing an image and with previous cameras have been able to do just that with very little in camera processing. With the K-5 it seems that it heavily relies on PP no matter what settings I use. I have it currently set up with as little in camera processing as possible.
So I can also admit on maybe being a bit PP lazy as a result of being capturing the moment as perfectly as possible.

First: I apologize for the length of the post, some of this may be perceived as just some typed out thought process. I hope that people will a least scan through it; if nothing else.
I want to add the full lens list, but I only have a few pulled out of storage...There is a pathetic story that goes along with it.. Part of what what clinched the deal of me hanging up the camera and stop shooting along with working on honing my career skills...Frozen pipes destroyed almost everything in the two story section of the front of our house and it ruined a lot of nice glass. I have a few left that were in different rooms along with some film cameras that were not getting used at the moment.

Only cameras I have been using have been my cell phone, a Sony NEX-6 and a point and shoot Panasonic Lumix.

Glass: Don't judge me on this list, I think a few came with kits or part of deals with other equipment. I still have to look through my storage (climate and humidity controlled because I play and collect guitars) to see what else I have. I still have my LX, PZ-1P, ZX-5n, and MZ-S, they were no where near here when the water burst and because of this I think I still have all my glass for those.

SMC Pentax-A 1:1.4 50mm
SMC Pentax-M 1:3.5 135mm
SMC Pentax-DA 1:1.8 50mm
Sigma Zoom 1:3:5-5.6 DC 18-50mm
SMC Pentax-DA 1:3.5-6.3 18-250mm ED AL (IF)
SMC Pentax-DA 1:3.5-5.6 18-55mm

Just bought and will be here tomorrow SCM Pentax-DA HD 15mm 1:4 ED AL Limited (The green stripe on the barrel)
Plan on buying more of these Limited
I have been reading that some people say the older glass is not as good of a choice with the newer hi MP cameras, So would this be an issue with the K1? If not, it could be a factor in me choosing the K1.

I can say that the price of a new camera does not bother me, over the last couple days I put new K-3 III as well as a K1 mark II in Adorama and B&H. B&H has a nice used K1 mk II with 3,000 shutter count and is listed as a "9" out of 10 on condition and a 28-105 lens for 1800 dollars, and would not say no to a new one either.

Part of me has been thinking of getting K1 II and purchasing a like new, low count KP (I am very intrigued with this camera from the comments and praise it has received), but I also though of sticking with the K--5 and buying some good glass to use on the K-5 & KP and I would have the K1 with the 28-105 to "play around with.....and learn). I am worried about some of the comments on low light and capturing motion that I have heard about the K1 (do you find this an issue?).

I can say that the K-3 III other than the lack of flash is very tempting, and for this or the K1 I can always carry a Pentax AF201FG. I just like the idea of a pop up instant flash to grab a moment where if I had to screw around with a flash I would most likely lose some of those opportunities.

Also, If loss of on board flash is the way things are going then I adjust.

I also carry around my Lumix in my pocket for quick shots, so using this for the few times I would choose the flash is always available....AND I hate to rule out two possibly great options because it does not have a flash.

I also have the option of saying just stick with the K-5 or adding a nicely priced K-5 2s. K-3 K-3 II, or KP. If I am jumping up to K-3 territory, after hearing how much of a difference the K-3 III have over it's predecessors, I might have buyers remorse is settling for a lesser body.

WHERE DID Michaelina2 GO??? I was enjoying the comments, if you are reading this...Jump back in!!!

OK, that's it for now....I apologize again for the length.

Sorry it has taken me so long to reply, have not had a lot of time to type this all up.
I will start off saying for me size and weight are not an issue, I'm a big guy at 6'6" and 250 pounds... might be an issue for my wife but she does not use the dslr's as much as I do.
When I bought the slightly used K-5 I had just finished my nuclear medicine degree and had a very busy job at the world's busiest trauma department in the world (Houston med center), there was a TV show about it that you may be familiar with.
Because of the above stated, I did not have a lot of time to be delving into the K-5 (previous was an *ist, and k100d), got discouraged and stopped using it... so I will be honest and say I don't know if i gave it a fair chance before I stopped using it.
I like to try my hand at any type of photography as I get bored with just sticking to one. I particularly enjoy landscape, nature/ wildlife, hiking, street, and just general walk around and see what trouble I can make. I am not a fan of taking portraits or working with people, although I like getting natural shots of people in life though.
I would really like to try astro as well.
I also like getting natural light (or lack of) and using a flash as little as possible, but I do like the on board flash for daylight fill.

I do have more to add but I don't have time right now.... wanted to get this posted and I will post back with some more info

Hoping this is not too rambling.
More or less a general thread since I don't feel this belongs in a camera specific section.

1st - I have a nice K-5 that i can say i love but I have never bonded with.
2nd - I have a choice of three cameras that are in great shape, two with super low shutter counts, one that has a bit higher number (but still low)
- K-3 with around 350 shutter counts that is priced a little less than $500, Just camera. charger, and batteries.
- K-3 with 811 shutter counts that is also priced just a little over $500 with shipping. comes with everything like new box and all extras.
- K-3 II for about 20,000 shutter count and a little of $700 price. It seems that a super low count K-3 II for a decent price.

I like that the K-3's are very low shutter count.....I did find a k-3 II silver body with 5,000 shutter counts and $750......but I just found out someone bought it out from under me

I wish I could have the pixel shift of the K-3 II and a pop up flash from the K-3.
Would a KP be a worthy contender with these cameras
Part of me is also thinking to upgrade to a K-5 IIs for some of the advantages I believe it has over the K-3

I am really on the fence and am trying to figure the flash or no flash but has pixel shifting
What are the pros and cons of the k-5 IIs, k-3, k-3 II, or KP.

it seems that there are so many opinions on them but I am having to search through multiple threads and it is quite confusing.

upgrade from *ist DL

I have been so busy with school I completely forgot it was tax return time, That could potentially change a lot. I have been looking around and saw the K20D and was also reading what I could about the K7 but I just don't see where saving the little bit of money would make it worth what seems like much less of a camera than the K5 or K5 II. I think I will start looking for some deals on a K5.
I don't really like that the shake reduction is moved to the menu. How much of a pain is it to navigate to?

Wow!!! Thanks for the replies. I am going to start looking around and see what I can dig up, hopefully something will turn up here. I stopped using the digital a long time ago and pretty much used my film bodies (which I will never abandon) but I really would like another digital.

Please keep helping & making suggestion.
Or maybe someone wants to trade my classic *ist DL for their used K5 that works good. You get a classic camera and the feeling that you have helped a struggling college student.

I have a *ist DL that I think I am finally wanting to upgrade from, I pulled it out over Christmas break and it was very painful to use. I am currently in college (again) and will have very little money for the next couple years so new anything is out of the question.

I have been out of the DSLR loop for quite a while and was wondering how what the Pentax lineup looked like and what would be some recommendations. I just expect the camera to have faster auto focus and better low light capabilities.

Sorry if I am vague on this, I just decided today today to start looking stuff up but I am taking too much time from studying and am hoping to get a jump start in the right direction.

Will a Sigma SD9 or SD10 work on a Pentax? I am not very "up" on this stuff but I do know there is some kind of connection between Pentax and Sigma cameras......So if there is a connection between the two I would something like the hot shoe make the list?

AF280T & *IST DL help needed

Thank you for the replies.....I finally got some time to try it out again today and it was working on and off for a while, I would fiddle with it and it would work then I would try changing the setting, adjust the angle, rotate the flash and it would stop working.

On closer inspection I noticed that the grounds on the base were not sticking out like they should, so I checked the cameras I had available and the it seems metal that comes into contact with the ground is a tighter fit on my older cameras.....So I took the base plate off, put some spring back into the grounds, and it seems to be working fine now.

And now that I have said that I have no doubt it will not working again.

AF280T & *IST DL help needed

I have a AF280T that I am trying to use on my *IST but it is only working on manual mode (the flash on manual not the camera), I have tried the camera on multiple settings and have the iso set to 400....I have read a bunch of threads about using this flash on the *IST line and also understand that it will not work on the TTL setting but it should be working on the auto setting.

This is the first flash I have put on this camera and I have no other flash that I could use....Actually I do, but they are all old Vivitar flashes. I also tried this flash on some older manual bodies and it fires on all settings.

I was hoping someone could help with diagnosing this problem.

Also, Is there a way to test the contacts on the hot shoe to make sure they are all working?

It's ok, she has her hand clawed on the horizontal surface, in other words she's as safe as can be.......unless she moves just a little bit and loses her balance.

It looks pretty high up from the middle of the photo, even if the ground rose steady to where the shooter is and she fell it would still but a dent in my day (and maybe my head)

As for the person who made the "what camera" or something of that nature. Sure this girl is cute and is definitely easy on the eyes but do you a woman around that will listen too and do everything stupid thing you, such as "Hey go hang over the edge of the wall and stick your legs straight in the air, it will look fantastic"
Well sure it sounds like a great idea, but at some point in you're life she is going to be rich and famous and you will still be a starving Photg and she will have no use for you.........well, I guess that doing every stupid and dangerous pose you mention could come in handy.........just make sure it happens after she is famous and before the relationship goes down hill.

hahaha!!!! Thanks for the welcomes and I am sorry to say that I have a Nikon F100, but don't worry......I have had it for over a year (maybe close to two years) and never used it. I realize that many think (sorry they know because someone told them in a magazine or blog) that Nikon is the best but I have always been the one that likes the little guy, the lesser known, The guys that do not advertise and buy all of their exposure (no pun intend.........or maybe it was). I am also sorry to say I have some of those old SRT's hanging around the house........Along with a few spares just in case I ever need parts.

I also like collecting old cameras of all styles (mostly old medium format stuff) even if they do not work, Some of them work but need attention and I try to get them fixed up, and some are just hopeless but I love the look of them........ I also like pinhole cameras and have made them out of what ever I can find and I have one made of maple that is a 4x5 and have a Polaroid back for it as well.

I like the Minolta's SRt's and use them but I love Pentax......... It's funny because it seems that the Minolta lovers (especially fans of the older ones) as well as the Pentax lovers are more of the "do it yourself" type guys, the ones that don't mind (actually love) finding unique and inventive ways to do things and make things for their camera.......It seems like they are the type of person that would rather get dirty and restore an old car and love it their whole time (even after they have pulled out their hair) and the Nikon/Cannon people are the ones that will buy based on what others tell them, trends, or whether it is newer and/or bigger.........these seem like the people that will buy and old car and them pay someone to do all the work.

The sad thing is that my first real post was in the digital printing (and all that garbage) section because I have no clue about a bunch of stuff with digital.

Disclaimer: These are my thoughts and my thoughts only........ this does not mean that all Nikon/Canon lovers are useless tools (even though they do stick out like useless tools) and I do realize that there are Pentax lovers that use a Nikon/Canon equipment because they are Pros and there is more equipment out there available from these larger companies. And there are also those that fall to the "darkside" and may never be turned back to the light.

Disclaimers Disclaimer: by "darkside" I in no way meant that Nikon/Canon equate to the most evil, deceitful, and manipulative group named the Sith and also did not intend to equate Pentax (even though I did) to any group of lightside "Jedi" and make it seem that the only way to redeem yourself would be to recognize the error of your ways and worship (I meant buy) a Pentax and leave your old evil ways behind.

Questions about online storage and printing.

All right, this is my first real post (other than my introduction) and I need some help. I have done some searching and am sorry if this has come up many times. My Wife took some photos while at a baby shower and want to be able to put them online (not to big of a problem there) but the real (or perceived to be a real) problem is somewhere so people can look at them and order prints.......Almost everyplace only lets you upload JPEG and if this is so than what is the reason for going to an ever and faster increasing MP camera, I understand that the bigger the MP the more you can crop and the bigger you can make your prints.........I would like to know what your limitations are when dealing with these places that you can order prints online and have them mailed to you if they are only allowing JPEG?

It seems that Flickr might be the best place to store and have people order a photo and have it mailed to them (which is what we would like to have people do). Out of all the different formats that Flickr allows you to upload what would be the best choice?

Just so everyone knows I has a *IST and is 6MP and the photos were shot in Raw (I believe PEF).

Apologies on the ADD like ramblings........I have tons of questions am attempting to find all the answers.

Hey all, I just signed up to ask a couple questions even though I have been lurking for a while......I live in the Houston area (actually south west of the city border in a Missouri City) but was born and raised in NY state (part of the family in the upstate area and part in the city), I moved to FL and lived in on the Fort Myers side of the Sanibel Bay and spent a few years in Tampa (blah!!!!!).

Anyway, I like reading, writing, playing guitar, and romantic walks on the bea............. Oh wait, wrong window:D

My first decent camera was a Pentax ZX-7 that I bought for when my Wife and I went on our honeymoon..... Used it on auto settings but got great pictures and I knew there was something to this newfangled film craze......before this point it was just point n shoot, but a few years after the ZX-7 I decided to go back to basics with K1000, eventually got a digital point and shoot and then decided I needs an DSLR and decided on a Pentax *IST (and I like the fact that people do not know what to call it) I went with this because it had most of the basics and not a bunch of stuff I would not use, I wanted something that would force me to work on the basics and I did not (and still do not) want to have digital take over my photo-life.

Sorry on the length, I am feeling good and am rambling on.........and yes!!!! this is the crazy why I type with tons of ........... and (stuff like this in brackets) because I think my brains broken........or at least not wired proper:D
