FA 31mm or Zeiss 35mm f/2 ZK Distagon

I once owned the FA31. It is a very good all round lens. Bokeh is great and very sharp stop down a little bit. I do final quite a bit of purple fringing on my sample though, and the wide open sharpness is not very good especially for 20M+ object distance. I did take a lot of my favorite pictures with it though. If you look beyond absolute sharpness, the FA31 is great. (My Pentax-A 50mm F1.7 is sharper at all comparable aperture, but the FA31 is sharper than my DA40 which l like very much) Depending on your camera. It may struggle on low light focus on moving objects. My Kx has problem following my daughter at low light when I shoot wide open. It's focus "stroke" is a balanced between MF and AF, so it does not do lightning fast AF.

If AF is optional for you, I recommend getting both the Zeiss and FA31 and see which one you like better. Lens preference is very subjective. You never know which one you like better until you try them out.

Pentax EVIL NC-1 has smaller sensor than APS-C - your opinion?

It will be nice if Pentax EVIL distinguishes itself with strong manual focus assist support like peaking or even some mechanized telescopic frange distance based auto focus. A mu43 sensor is so small that you have a lot of margin before vignetting becomes a problem with auto focus using mechanized frange distance adjustment for legacy FF lens.

A lot of people buy EVIL cameras for the fun of using legacy lens, but magnification based focus assist works well only on stationary objects for very fast lens. That's my experience using the liveview manual focus with my Kx. A legacy lens friendly Pentax EVIL camera will be a very exciting product for enthusiasts.

The praise on AF performance put many people's minds at ease. I am not sure why the build quality is considered not as good as the 7D or 300s though. I do not have any of those cameras, but the exceptional WR capability should give the K5 extra bonus on it buld quality.

Hi,

My name is Chi-Hang Lin.

I bought a Kx in July as my first dSLR and started enjoying photgraphy. I am now in love with the old Pentax-A 50mm F1.7 lens. It is an amazing sensation shooting photos with a 2010 camera and a lens from the 80s. The photos are better than anything I produced with my Canon S80 P&S camera.

I have learned a lot from this forum. Thanks a lot in advance for the help that I will get in the future.
