I tend to look at my lenses as investments. I think that an A*85 or FA would retain or gain in value as time passes.
As the FA77 is still in production, price should be relatively stable.
But as people have mentioned, some gravitate towards the 77 since it's more compact.
It doesn't matter how good a lens is if you don't use it.

I sold my fa50/1.4 and opted to lose a stop with a gain in sharpness with the fa50/1.7.
It's still pretty sharp wide open and you could still use any filters/ hoods you had with the fa50/1.4.
I think the price should be comparable to the fa50/1.4 and cheaper than any of the newer options previously mentioned. Possibly the only difficulty would be finding one that someone is selling.

i can deal with either AF or manual.
the trouble is when you hand your camera to someone else who not manually inclined.
