[New video Oct 27] New information about upcoming APS-C flagship model

Thank you. I completely agree. Clearly the majority of fine folks in this amazing community disagree and that's cool. Two things I was most looking forward to on my next Pentax body was an articulating screen and GPS. After renting an X-T4 and experiencing an articulating screen for the first time, I cannot go back to a fixed screen. Just too many creative opportunities lost. Therefore, after much deliberation, with neither of these on the K-33 I will sadly not be purchasing this camera. To complicate things further, the screen on my K-3 is suddenly dying with no obvious trigger. That leaves me the KP or the K-1. I think I will rent the K-1 for my Christmastime photos just to get me into the new year and see if I can live with the lack of speed. But, reading these Ricoh updates is making me realize that perhaps the hard truth is that my needs are no longer in sync with Ricoh's vision. It'd be like losing a best friend but c'est la vie.

Amazon is now also offering a free $200 GC for the Pentax K-1 (body only) as well. I do not see a GC promotion for the 28-105mm combo.

Happy Thanksgiving!

I rented an X-T4 for a long weekend and took it with me on over 20 miles of hiking trails. This was my first experience with remote geotagging (well, MILC too) as I tested BT and the Fujifilm Camera Remote app on my hikes. When the phone and the camera were in sync everything worked as it should, but the connection was unreliable. Even with the phone in my shirt pocket, BT connectivity would sometimes drop off and it would take at least a several seconds for the XT-4 to reconnect. Location sync would mysteriously drop off even though the BT connection stayed on. I have a (bad?) habit of turning off a camera when not in use and not relying on any power saver modes. Unfortunately, I learned the hard way that turning the camera off was a real gamble because while the devices would usually reconnect within 30 seconds, location/time sync was dicey and several times I had to restart some mysterious combination of the app, BT, and/or location to obtain the signal. If I wasn't paying attention I'd take several photos before I realized I was not storing the latest coordinates. Always having to babysit my BT/location connection while trying to take photos and being tethered to my phone was a habit I struggled to form and while I eventually did, it was cumbersome and frustrating. Was it worth it? I have always wanted geotagged photos for my hikes so yes, it was.

But, I must say, I longed for the Pentax in-body solution all weekend and it frustrated me to no end thinking that the K-33 may not have this feature. IMO, in-body GPS is quintessentially Pentax, like weather-sealing and IBIS was back in the early DSLR days. My comments in no way assume that remote geotagging will be the same or worse with Ricoh. If Ricoh somehow improves the experience I will keep an open mind, but having to babysit two devices to geotag feels like an unnecessary step backward. All disclaimers aside about this being my personal opinion and that not everyone cares about GPS and on and on, I think the absence of this feature is a mistake on a high-end Pentax camera, "action-oriented" or not.

Yes, it's not set in stone. I am assuming though the specs are referring to OGPS support. I agree that OGPS is better than nothing, until I need fill-in flash. And, yes, several have speculated here geotagging will be supported via a mobile phone app, just like with the Fuji X-series. I'd much rather have OGPS support then be tied to my smartphone and location tracking. These are factors I will have to weigh when the time comes next year to make a decision. I am replacing the K-3 in 2021, that I know for certain. With what remains totally up in the air. My point was that for me, personally, these specs haven't made this an easy decision. I want to stay with Pentax, but I am going to research my alternatives before shelling out 1.5-2k USD.

I very much appreciate Ricoh's specifications release this week. I am renting an X-T4 for a hiking trip this weekend and will be using an electronic viewfinder for the first time. My K-3 will also be in tow for comparisons. It will be nice to have some specifications from the K-3III to compare with my field experiences from the XT-4

Sadly, it appears there is no onboard GPS/Astrotracer functionality. Kudos to the folks predicting the K-3III was going to be targeted as a wildlife/action camera and that Ricoh was envisioning a product line with distinct purposes. While ISO performance, AF performance/coverage, and BT support were at the top of my desired improvements/features, so was onboard GPS and a non-stationary screen. I foolishly assumed the latter features would be no brainers given the K-3II onboard GPS and the K-1's revolutionary screen. There is no doubt that this camera will be a big leap forward for Ricoh/Pentax. I just am not confident it'll be the camera for me. It looks like I have some big decisions to make in the new year.

Enjoy the news everyone!

It's what I was hoping for when the K-1 was released. And l also am not impressed with a few millimeters here or there. Confirmation of the fixed screen confirms for me that I will be renting an XT-4 before I make any decision about my next camera, but it's going to be very difficult to pull me away from Pentax. To each his own.

Another snippet from Pentax HQ

The article may imply that the only purpose of the eye sensor (a.k.a. "new? automated eye sensor technology") is to turn off the LCD for viewfinder visibility. Seriously? To quote Mr. Collins: I Cannot Believe It's True (and no, I'm not a fixed-screen skeptic).

If there is a touchscreen, why keep a touchscreen so close to the chest? It's not a pioneering feature in 2020. I don't understand this excruciatingly slow bleed of information, but that doesn't make it wrong, just curious. Is this just Ricoh's modus operandi or do they think they are being exceedingly clever and sly? Forgive me, but I am finding it increasingly annoying.

The new OVF sounds quite innovative, no question. But two articles, three videos, three months, a fixed screen, 3mm extra spacing for your nose, and a "new" automated eye sensor later, it's becoming a bit comical to me. At this rate we'll see a new camera in another year or two.

The OP nailed it when they said "snippet". Death by a thousand snippets...

I don't necessarily mind using an O-GPS1 for my needs, until I need a fill flash. I don't mind purchasing a small flash for this purpose in order for me to have GPS built-in. However, there's only one hotshoe obviously and I would use both features often enough that the lack of an in-body GPS would be very difficult to accept, in 2020, after waiting years for a new model. However, I cannot wrap my head around the absence of GPS given Pentax's astrotracer innovations so I'll wait for official specs before worrying about that. My new Olympus TG-6 has managed space in its compact body for a GPS module, so why not the K-new (no, I am not an engineer)? Fuji (among others?) has gone the route of geotagging photos using the location feature on your smartphone and this is one major reason I've resisted the temptation to jump ship. I do not want to be tethered to my smartphone much less have location on all the time. To each his own, of course.

I for one am actually enjoying these videos quite a bit. Yeah, they aren't super revealing, but I like that Pentax is trying to have a conversation with its users/fans. I appreciate their vision and have to say that one of the main reasons I've tried to stay loyal to the brand is because of ergonomics. Every Pentax camera I've been fortunate to own has been a joy to use. They are comfortable in my large hands, functions/dials/buttons are intuitive and responsive, and I admit they are fun to operate. I expect the new APS-C camera to be no different, perhaps even better. Therefore, from that perspective, I understand what Ricoh is trying to market and while I do think some of it is a bit fluffy and transparent from a marketing standpoint, I also admit that there is a sizable element of logic and truth that makes it effective. These videos prove there is sincerity in this vision.

I have been hoping for a fully articulating screen, in fact, up until the initial photos surfaced, I was assuming it was a no-brainer. I assumed, incorrectly, that the K-1 design would be incorporated into the next APS-C release, which was very exciting to me. I hadn't even considered a new model without one. Therefore, I was very surprised and disappointed when those first photos appeared. But, I am not blind; the new model clearly lacks an articulated screen and all the video does is remind us of that fact. Ricoh's vision I also think explains WHY. So, you win some, you lose some; there are no perfect products. My other feature hopes (in no particular order) were GPS, Bluetooth, improved high-sensitivity performance, improved AF performance, and a larger buffer. Though, I will say that no GPS AND no articulating screen will be a tough pill to swallow.

The silver bodies are gorgeous and I've always wanted a silver Pentax. If I decide to replace my K-3 with the new APS-C and if they are going to release black and silver simultaneously, then silver it will likely be because I will likely be an early adopter. I am curious about the silver paint and how resistant it is to scratches, however.

Looking forward to the next tease...

Completely agree. I am also a "gotta get a good deal" kind of shopper. However, with Pentax DSLRs, even at full retail they are historically value propositions (see how I am starting to justify it!?) :D I have zero concerns about reliability or issues out of the gate; it seems to me that Ricoh is very good with firmware updates.

I've also always longed for a silver Limited Edition release; but I never could justify paying full retail. I might be tempted for this release (if they offer one). I am on my 5th year since my last new body and I intend on the K-new lasting me a long time too. We'll just have to see what the price is and what the features are.

Yeah, the lack of swag makes no sense at all, unless they have exhausted their supply. Considering the KP was $599 for Black Friday, this is a good deal, but nothing noteworthy.

RICOHHOLIDAY for $11.00 off any order.

LOL, no joke about the hot shoe cover! Already have the 55-300 (would like to upgrade to the PLM), and really don't need the 18-135 (love my 16-85), but man, those 100yr accessories!!! (Ha ha) [emoji16]

Yeah, I had the same problem. The product page was hastily thrown together. However, you can see the anniversary items in the promo on the main page.

BTW, the RICOHHOLIDAY coupon still provides an $11.00 discount...better than nothing!

If they provide a similar KP bundle, it'll be very hard to resist. The Theta deal isn't bad either and I would love to have one. Since it's still active I will wait and see what the next 10 days bring.

Kudos to Ricoh USA for what looks to be another solid set of deals. The K-70 deal is perfect for a person new to DSLR photography, among others of course!

My whopping /s $60 in fan gear was sent signature required and since I wasn't at home for UPS, they sent the package to a local CVS drugstore for pickup! I'll run by today to pick them up. I don't obsessively check the tracking number but my delivery was taking forever so I got curious. Good thing I checked, because UPS left no note on my house letting me know!

I mean, I get it if it was the coveted hot-shoe cover, but who knew these caps and t-shirts were such hot commodities!?

I called Precision Camera today after getting a bit impatient with the lack of a status update. A very nice lady told me the lens was shipped to Ricoh in Japan for repair and that it would probably be another few weeks before it is sent back to Precision and then mailed back to me. I don't mind the wait, but it would be nice if Precision Camera would send some sort of update if the lens has to be mailed overseas. Oh well.

Maybe I'll have it back by Christmas.

Cheers!

Just FYI, I needed to call Precision Camera to check on the status of my 16-85mm repair. The first time I called, I pressed "1" to get to Customer Service, and after the automated system acknowledged that I reached the CS department, I got a message: "THIS IS NOT THE NUMBER FOR PRECISION CAMERA! I REPEAT, THIS IS NOT THE NUMBER FOR PRECISION CAMERA!" followed by a voicemail tone! I called back, went through the whole menu system, and was forwarded to the operator. Once again, I got the same message! I was obviously getting annoyed, but I didn't see any other folks on the forum complaining about this, so after about 15 minutes, I called back, pressed "1", and got through to a very nice lady who quickly updated my status. She told me they are aware of the problem and they are working on a solution and apologized profusely for the confusion.

Just in case it happens to one of you...

Cheers!

My repair went to Precision Camera in Connecticut. We shall see how I fare. I planned for the lens to be gone for many weeks, but I would like to see some progress soon. Like you said, you work with what you have.

I took my first family hiking trip without the 16-85 since last year, reverting back to my old reliable Tamron 17-50 as my primary lens. An excellent lens in its own right with great image quality, but I missed the extra reach and, yes, AF performance of my 16-85.

My lens's status is "Received" and it's been that way for two weeks now. Would sure like to see it move to "In Repair". Are you still waiting for yours? Cheers!

Thank you. Spot on. A camera can either excel at action or landscape, but not both, apparently. Gotta lug around multiple bodies in 2020 I guess.
