I think Pentax managed to miss the boat when they chose to release the KF.
In my mind, a revised KP would have made so much more sense, even if it was effectively a KP in a K-70 body.
Doubtless parts availability and financial constraints were considerations :(

Thank you all for your thoughts and advice to help me.

@syyrymb @kypfer @UncleVanya @ramseybuckeye @yucatanPentax

It still all remains puzzling so I will take the general advice - just get out there and learn as I go along.
So far I haven't done too badly - correction, the KP hasn't done too badly - my working with the basics plus that I do know of this lovely camera.

The camera does kind of sort itself out, doesn't it? LOL

Here are 3 images taken purely by the KP held by a somewhat befuzzled operator.

Hi all, long time ago since my last post. Nice to see a lot of nice images posted in the meantime. Less happy about recent posts with the 20-40 ( because I don’t have that one yet and try to convince myself that I don’t need more lenses.)

I’ve taken a trip last febr- march to Japan and South Korea, taking my 15,21,40 and 70 mm limiteds, (and acquired a second hand 100mm macro when in Japan). Together with my KP it was a nice light high quality setup.

Here are some pictures:

100mm: ( I know it’s not called a limited, but it fits right in for build and image quality and light weight so I sneak one picture in…)

I just finished up a video series showing the repair of a Pentax MZ-3. You can find it here.

Pentax MZ-3 Repair - YouTube

It's pretty long, but if you just want to see the heart of the repair, understand exactly what breaks in this camera and what the consequences are, check out Part 3. Or if you're just curious about what's inside one of these cameras and how the mechanisms are designed, I take some time explaining that as well. Hope you like.

It reminds me a bit of the whole in body stabilization versus in lens stabilization arguments that went on. Nikon and Canon fed their customers the idea that in lens stabilization was so much better than sensor stabilization. It might have been a little better for telephotos, but certainly all of that changed when their MILCs started to incorporate sensor stabilization.

(I do agree with you that this whole MILC phenomenon is about the new mount and the fact that you can sell lenses that people already own to them a second time for more expensive prices than they paid the first time around.)

How can this be possible???
What a rip-off!!!

It actually is a design fault by Ricoh, most likely the WR part stops the "Flex Move-Ribbon cable" to move easely but bent more.
This should be repaired for free even if warranty gone.

I have defended Ricoh for the China-Solenoid, they couldn't have knows.

But this is "botch"!

It could and should have been avoided.

Makes me very upset... reluctantly I sold my (perfect working) KP now quite cheap.

This is a bottom-line reason why there SHOULD be a KP II! NO other DSLR can compete with high-end mirrorless for a compact, quality-made, high-performing, easy-carrying kit. The KP, especially with the Limited series of lenses, can deliver exactly that in spades. And you are looking through the VF at reality, not an electroninc version of it, which you can still have via the KP's rear screen.

So many other posts here, with such a variance of preferences, have very well illustrated the usefulness of the availability of different grip sizes. This unique concept was pure genius on the part of Ricoh-Pentax! This adaptive modular design, ranging from the smallest, legacy-style grip, through the largest supplied grip, to the optional battery grip growing the camera to the "beast" level, is yet another aspect that widens the KP's appeal to a yet greater degree beyond what the mirrorless crowd offers.

As to the grip design, I have found through much experience with the KP and my other models having a standard type grip, that there is a not-too-obvious holding-advantage for the KP's grip! Don't get me wrong, I do still like the excellent gripping characteristics of my K-5 IIs and my K-1 II. But all these grips have the finger notch, which is usually occupied by the middle finger, while the trigger finger is resting on the grip up near the trigger. With this type of grip while using a lens of substantial size and weight, it is secure, but there is an extra stress on the middle finger when handling over time, even if a battery grip is added! The KP is minus this notch, thus without the stess on the middle finger! Stability is added by adding the largest supplied grip (just for carrying, I have my trigger finger up over the front dial housing), or far more stability yet when adding the battery grip, especially if holding/carrying in the vertical position when not shooting. There is no finger notch even with the battery grip- just a lot more holding surface.

I love the imaging I am getting from my KPs. I am still amazed at the image quality I am getting, even after some 6 years of ownership! A KP II might be upgraded with a BSI type of sensor, combined with the KP's accelerator type technology for yet better higher ISO performance, an upgraded AF system, a stronger built-in flash (even my very small K-S2 has this), an optical DOF preview via the on/off lever as in other top models would be nice, and perhaps an even better VF. The idea being- all this while keeping the size and weight as-is. The rear-screen defective design causing its connective cable to break from flexing must also be corrected!!

What a testimonial to a discontinued model as are the posts in this thread, and from the KP being the only Pentax model where the price of left-over stock INCREASED after it was discontinued!!

Haha, yes: "kit lens on steroids" is a good description of the 18-135mm. I've noticed occasional vignetting with mine too, but as you say it's easily fixable. CA doesn't seem to be any issue so far, and my guess is that people who accuse it of being soft at 135mm just haven't bothered to calibrate their autofocus.

I finally got it out in some winter afternoon sunlight today on the K200D:

It's still early days, but I think it's a lens I can live with.:)

A cork (oak) tree in Portugal in 2010. Cork trees were under pressure due to climate change even back then, which spurred a lot of research into corks made from other materials which might
have similar properties to those of natural cork. They were having trouble coming up with a material that was close, but I haven't heard anything recently about whether they were successful or
not. K-10D and FA 28-80mm.

Well... I'm aboard since the K10d, and I've followed closely Pentax's actuality since then. At this time Pentax was competing with Nikon & Canon, releasing multiple (real) new products every year, rivaling or beating the competition for a fraction of the price.

Nearly 20 years later, we are in a situation where you're excited because in a single year they released:
- K3 monochrome: a nice addition to the line, with as you said little to no equivalent. But it's not a new body, and it's niche in the niche. A new option of a 3 years old body released 2500€ (500€ more than the original), even though it didn't require the amount of work of a new body, far from it. Did you buy it?
- K3 monochrome matte: a different colour and you count that as a second product, come on...
- 50 1.4 HD/SMC: they ran a new batch of a decades old lens. Again, it's a welcome update but you can't call that a new product, little to no R&D involved here.
- GR iii diary edition: again, a new colour and you call that a new product?

Let's be honest, 2023 is one of the worst years of the last two decades. Maybe beaten by 2022? Without doing any research are you able to name a single (real) new product released last year? I don't, the last real new release I remember is the D-FA 21 Limited (2021).

Worse, they are discontinuing lenses (3 this year: DA560, DA40, DA50-135) faster than they release new ones. At this pace when the film camera will be released they will no longer sell lenses for it 😅

Let's hope that they are busy working on the K1-iii, but I doubt it (and I'm afraid to see the price).

Then we have the film project. Niche in the niche of the small niche.

If a friend of yours asks "I want to invest ~5-10k€/$ in photographic gear, what brand do you advice?", what will you answer? Until recently I was recommending Pentax depending on what people were intending to shoot. I would no longer, unfortunately 😕
