KEH has a "LN-" Q with the 8.5mm for $299.
While it doesn't guarantee that it's life wasn't spent on a shelf with no cap/lens on it, I doubt KEH would rate it like that if the sensor was covered with dust.

One thing that hasn't been raised is the warranty, a shiny new Pentax will have a one year warranty. The used Nikon could have anywhere from 0 to several months (depending on what the retailer offers.) and if it comes from someone who knows someone, you could be inheriting a problem child.
It would be a real annoyance after two years to finally get yourself a camera, only to end up spending your first years lens budget, or more, on repairing it.

I'd even go as far to say that your current camera is up to the task, and your finances should be used for the purchase of high quality lenses.

I have a couple Elan II's, they'll focus a USM lens just fine.
They were the middle of the range camera for their day, above the Rebels, and below the 1's & 3's.
The potential issue is that they use 2CR5 batteries which can be a pain to find at times, like when your battery dies in the small town when you're on vacation, but if it has the vertical grip (Model# BP-50) you can then use AA's which are far more common place.
They still sell the grip new at B&H for 65 dollars, or you can also find them in camera accessory bins in pawn shops for 5 dollars.

I too enjoy shooting with film. What I don't enjoy is trying to find rolls of 120 without having to order online or drive to Toronto.
