I wish I spent more time on this site so I could have answered this promptly.

Did you buy the Opteka?

I did! Before you posted the question. I posted about it at the time, but possibly in the wrong place.

Opteka 10X Macro Lens Attachment - PentaxForums.com

Anyway, For the above post, I got some good but odd results, better than I expected. Part of that was the lens I attached it to (an old mf Takumar 135/2.5). I’ve tried it on my FA 50/1.7 and got some really good shots. I’m sure a more critical eye might say that other lenses would be better, but those are in a different price ballpark.

If you bought it, I’d be very curious as to how you feel about the results.

I love the composition. I see a staircase leading into the clouds, but I agree there is something that isn’t quite right. A little dodging on the upper flight of stairs might help carry the eye up into the rest of the composition. As is, the left rail Carrie’s your eye into the tree, but the right rail, which is now separate from the left, just stops. Getting more definition in the upper stairs should help tie the staircase into a single unit. And then again it might not.

Exchangeable Viewfinder Screens

I thank all of you for the advice.

I might have mentioned (or included in a signature as many do) why I’m very familiar with split screen focusing. My first camera was a K-1000 in about 1977. But I had much better eyes in 1977. Alas, stolen from a dorm room in 1981, and not replaced (with an SLR) for many years. Not relative to this discussion, but in addition to my K-r, I also still own a ZX-7, an SF-10, and a K110.

After reading your replies, and reading several other posts (searching for focusing screen instead of viewfinder screen yielded more results) I probably won’t change screens, as much as I’d like to. Losing spot metering on all my lenses is too big a price to pay. I often spot meter my subject, lock, and recompose. Old habits die hard. No 77 point auto exposure on the K-1000. It’s also too difficult to go back and forth.

What I’ve wanted for years is the ability to program the green button to switch between regular metering to spot metering, but I don’t see it happening. I like shooting people, and I want to make sure they are lit properly, and that the Trevi Fountain (white) or the ski slope we’re on isn’t messing it up. Yes, both have happened, but because I’m anal about this very thing, I had spot metered versions as well.

I dislike live view (those old habits again) but I’ve used the green hex since I got back into the sport. On my previous DSLRs, I also used “snap in focus” but I could never get it to work with the K-r.

Exchangeable Viewfinder Screens

I’m about to pull the trigger on an upgrade from my K-r, so I was looking at the specs to see the differences between the K-70 and the KF, since I can still get the K-70. This triggered some other thoughts.

I have a couple of manual focus lenses I really like and would love a split focusing screen. Therefore, I have questions about exchangeable screens. Mainly, how exchangeable are they?

I’m not young, and I don’t have surgeons’ hands. Will I be able to make the change, or will I have to have someone else (a 16 year old? A service tech?) do it?

If it’s easy enough for me to do, is it easy enough that I can switch back and forth? Would there be any reason to? I saw in an older post (that didn’t discuss difficulty) that there were functions that relied on the original screen, but they didn’t say what those functions were.

Also, at least one manufacturer (Fotodiox) says “viewfinder will actually look darker than with the standard screen”. Does anyone know if it’s significantly darker? Dark enough that I really would prefer the original enough for everyday that I’d want to switch only when I knew I was going to be using the manual focus lenses?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Paul

The lens is stopped down to (i think?) f/8 for all the shots. The exif doesn't record the aperture for this lens.

In a jpeg image, even on a 5k monitor (new 27" iMac,) you shouldn't be able to tell the difference. You would have to blow it up to an enormous size, and the lossy compression of jpeg will blur any difference.

The one that should be easiest is the dog pair, but it's almost impossible because of the framing difference. You should be able to tell a 70mm lens from a 100mm lens by the amount of compression of space, even if the angle of view is the same. Because the distance from the lens to the sensor is the same, if the dog was the same distance from the wall in both pictures, he would have appeared to be closer to the wall with the 100mm lens. In the others, the distances from the front to the back are too small or too blurred (depth of field) to judge compression of space.

Bought this on a lark for $25. Put it on a Takumar 135 f/2.5 and played around with it. I didn't expect much from that combination, but I'm pretty happy.

These are pretty much SOOC. Shot Raw, exported as jpeg. The dime is with the Opteka. The flower and the strawberry are first without the Opteka and then with it. The dogs are just with the Takumar, first without PP and then with just a little.

I like mine. The only problem I've had with it is the control dial stops working after a while. My guess is that grunge from my finger builds up. I spray Marine Electronic Cleaner in and spin it a few times, and it comes back to life.

The perfect/best portrait lens for K-1

The above advice is totally wrong. The angle of view of the 200 on full frame is the same as the 135 on APS-c, but the perspective is not!

Telephoto lenses compress space. A telephoto lens in the 70 - 135 range is generally pleasing, as it makes noses appear shorter, but otherwise renders an image that appears much the same as the human eye. Longer lenses exaggerate the flattening effect, leading to portraits that are fairly unpleasant. Most people don’t look good with flat faces.

Fastest Way to Change Exposure Modes

Thanks for the reply. I thought I was nuts, but it turns out that Pentax made another weird design decision.

I'm I that odd to want to check that my subject is properly metered? Matrix metering is great, except when it isn't. I've tied the metering to the focus point, but that isn't the same. That's what I want to use the green button for! I'm just not happy that I can't.

Simple question, I hope.

What is the fastest way (i.e. Green Button?) to switch on the fly from matrix metering to spot metering on my K-r?

Is there any way to temporarily switch without using a menu?
