Enoeske - that is a stunning portrait!

At the Monterey Bay Aquarium:

I'm replacing my K3 this week following a smash-and-grab robbery of my SUV on Sunday. In addition to losing the rear window and hatch of the SUV, I lost the K3 and 3 lenses.

Thanks mamethot and emalvick! It was fun being out there... a warm night, no mosquitoes, and a good companion to chat with while we watched the planes take off.

SFO doesn't have many vantage points where you can shoot planes. I've also tried Oakland airport and there aren't any spots allowing close viewing.

America's Pastime. Buster Posey smacks a line drive the other day in AT&T park. The Giants won, 4-1.

Taken with the Sigma 18-250, f8, 1/1000th of a second.
Shooting through a backstop from right behind home plate makes for some interesting challenges, both focus-wise and compositionally.

Really nice ones, John.

I'm envious -- never had success here with fireworks and 30-second exposures. The big shows have so many explosions so quickly that the longest I can keep the shutter open is 2-3 seconds. Anything longer and I end up with blown out highlights, no matter how small the aperture is.

rawr - I love the Sigma wides. And fairgrounds are great for night shooting/long exposures. Somewhere around 6 seconds seems to be the optimal amount of time to get nice light trails.

Be aware that the front element dome glass tends to pick up lens flare like crazy. Don't worry about it - just go with it and let it be part of the photo.

*chuckles*

Turns out the biggest issue in switching to back-button focus is me. I keep pushing the shutter button half-way down and nothing happens. Damn, it's hard to retrain 30 years of muscle memory. :-)

I agree - this is going to be very useful in situations where I pre-focus and then...

a) wait for someone to enter the frame... i.e., some street shooting where I preselect the backdrop
b) or wait for fireworks to start exploding in the scene
c) or want to freeze the focus but move the camera off the selected object to recompose the framing a little

In the past, I would autofocus, then switch over to manual focus to keep the lens from moving off my target when firing. This will be much better... If I can train my brain and finger to reach for the AF button :) Old habits die hard.

Thanks again, guys!

I'm feeling really stupid this morning and am in a huge rush - leaving the house in 30 minutes for a photoshoot and can't find what I need in the K3 menus or manual. I need help, LOL!

I'd like to change my habits... and turn off auto-focusing with the shutter release button's half-press. I want to auto-focus ONLY when I'm using the rear AF button.

I'll be damned if I can figure out where that gets configured. I'm sure it's just me this morning. I probably need more coffee
;)

Pentax Remote Shutter Release Compatible with Canon T5i?

Not sure if this is the right place to ask this question... but here goes.

I have a couple of wired remote shutter releases (one Pentax, one 3rd party)... and a couple of IR remote shutter releases. All work fine on my K-5 and K-3.

I have a friend with a Canon T5i who will be coming to town and I want to teach him about long exposures and shooting at night.

Will my remote shutters (cable or IR) work on his Canon? Or will we have to make a trip to the camera store after he gets here?

There's a silver lining to everything. I'm going through a divorce... so there was nobody here to tell me I couldn't purchase the K3 :-) It came this afternoon, along with the new 360 flash. Yay for new toys!

I'm a very happy camper now. Compared to my K5, the K3's AF.S autofocus is fast and locks with zero (or with very little) hunting, even in dim room with full-moon equivalent lighting. Yes, I'm using the focus assist light... I still need to turn that off and try again without it... but wow, this beats the pants off the fuss-and-fiddle focus of my old K5.

Oh and I love the smaller focus points too - especially since I occasionally like to shoot naturey crap (palm fronds, flowers) with very wide apertures. The smaller points help me narrow in on exactly the part of the leaf or petal I want to remain in focus.

Now let's see how this does on the street, using AF.C to track and capture street candids of people in motion. Going to have to read the manual and try out the options for selecting focus areas, methinks.

Add: And in other good news, they redesigned that crappy battery door on the AF360 flash! Hallelujah!

Ah, this is good news! I'm currently running LR 3.6 and was not looking forward to upgrading my software (including Vista-to-Windows-7 or 8) just to be able to process DNGs from the K3 when it arrives next week. One step (and one expense) at a time!

Yup. My K-3 body and the AF360FGZ II Flash (god, what a lousy product name) went from "on order" to "in stock, order sent to warehouse" in the last few hours.

Woohoo!

And my credit card got charged.

Oy.
