This is a picture of main street in the old copper mining town of Bisbee, Arizona, taken just after sundown. The evening lights have just been turned on. All the buildings seen here are well over 100 years old, and are still in use today. The building on the left is both a library and the town post office; it dates from 1906. There is no mail delivery in Bisbee, as it's very hilly with steep climbs necessary to get to most of the houses. The residents have been picking up their mail from their PO boxes at the post office / library since it was built by the Phelps Dodge Mining Company. The bank on the right pre-dates the post office, and originally housed the Bank of Bisbee. It was taken over by the Bank of America at the time of this picture, and is now occupied by Western Bank. My mother was born here in 1912, when electric street cars were in use up and down this street. Bisbee was the major supplier of copper for the war effort during WWI.

As a freelance writer/photographer, I get to take interesting product shots. This was taken with the 35mm on a K-3. It's a Smith and Wesson Model 27 (.357 magnum) in its fitted presentation case. The beautiful walnut grips are handcrafted painstakingly.

In retirement, I have been writing articles (and a book - 101 Classic Firearms, available on Amazon) on classic and historical firearms. I recently took this picture of a couple of Smith & Wesson revolvers that were shipped in my birth year, 1939. I habitually use the 35mm lens for its sharpness - it reveals even small details. It took me years to find specimens that were in near perfect condition, given that they have been around, like me, for 81 years!

Taken on the road between Benson and Tombstone Arizona, approaching Tombstone from the north. A Monsoon storm was brewing over Tombstone.

Taken during the monsoon season in Arizona with the 18-135 and a K-5. The clouds often provide a spectacular backdrop for outdoor subjects.

I took this near Sedona, Arizona with a K-5 and the 18-135. It was in July, during Arizona's monsoon season.

This is our little street urchin stray that we adopted a little over a year ago. She's probably about a year and a half old. Her intellect and personality are stunning for a dog so young, and we love her goofy face. She's a "Velcro dog" and loves us, too. We lost our eldest daughter in a private plane crash last October, and if it weren't for the positive attitude and support of this little dog, coping with the tragedy would have been a lot harder. Taken on the spur of the moment in natural indoor light, at ISO 3200, using the K-3 and the 18-135, 1/30 sec., f/4.5.

I do quite a bit of writing and photography for firearms publications, and I thought this shot of a Smith & Wesson Model 48 (in .22 magnum rimfire caliber) turned out nicely. I used the 35 Macro Ltd, as I routinely do with handguns. This specimen is in excellent shape for being 44 years old!

This sundown shot was taken with the K-3 and the 18-135 at Christmastime from a hill overlooking the Rio Grande river valley in Las Cruces, NM. It's actually a crop from a larger, wider picture so as to appropriately place the mountain at the left.

Taken at night across a lake at the Phoenix AZ zoo. Each Christmas season, a dazzling display of lights is provided. This picture was taken hand-held; the K-5 was selected for its excellent low-light performance. The ISO selection was 3200.

During the Christmas season, the Phoenix AZ Zoo lights up its area with beautiful lights that are best seen at night. This shot was taken handheld, helped by the camera's shake reduction feature. I used the K-5 for its ability to take photos in dim light; this one was at 3200 ASA. The lights were on the other side of a lake at the zoo, the level horizon assured by the camera's assistance information in the viewfinder. I thought it was a very interesting and beautiful scene.

I have had a real issue with PPG lately - I cannot upload a photo. I go through the routine, and then the screen goes blank white. When I re-access the site, my photo data is there, but NOT the photo. I then delete the pointless data. This has been going on for 3 weeks now. I sent a note of concern to the site's keepers, but no response. Has this happened to anyone else??? Color me disgusted.

Since she was a stray, we have no idea as to her parentage. She has the long body and short legs of a Dachshund, but the face of a terrier of some sort. I suspect some of both!

Our superdog, Joe, passed away from cancer this May. We were truly in mourning, reluctant to get another dog. Well, Corey happened to us last week, and I thought I'd share this photo taken with the 18-135 - natural light. She's a little jewel!

This is a pic of my recently-deceased superdog, Joe. He was then basking in some sunshine on our back patio. He was a wonderful dog - loving, caring, and supportive in every way. I miss him greatly - he had cancer, and we finally had to put him to sleep about a month and a half ago. It was gut-wrenching.
K-3, 35mm Macro Ltd, f/2.8, 1/8000, ISO 320. This fine lens did a great job again. |
